BEN .lVI. HAIMLIN, OF CHIGAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO I. V. B'IEYERING TRUNK COM- PANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
COMBINED DRAWER-LOOKING DEVICE AN D IRONING- BOARD FOR WARDROBE TRUN KS.
Application filed July 15,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BEN M. HAMLIN, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, Cook County, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Drawer-Locking Devices and Ironing Boards for Wardrobe Trunks, of which the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to combined drawer locking devices and ironing boards for wardrobe trunks and its principal object is to provide a unitary structure capable of use as a drawer look, when in one position, and as an ironing board, when in another position. I
As is well known, wardrobe trunks are usually provided with drawers or trays in one section and in some cases, means are provided for looking all of the drawers from one place. Often an ironing board forms part of the wardrobe trunk equipment, and I have provided an ironing board, which is capable of being stored in the drawer section of the trunk when not in use, and so constructed and arranged that it may beattached to said drawer section to extend in front of the drawers to prevent withdrawal and may be locked to said section against removal. The arrangement is such, that part of the attaching means acts as a leg or prop for the ironing board when held in horizontal or ironing position; the drawer section of the trunk may afford the support for the other end of the ironing board.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the drawings accompanying this specification in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a wardrobe trunk of ordinary construct on equipped with a combined drawerlocking device and ironing board embodying a simple form of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the ironing board detached from the trunk; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a certain combined lockingbar and leg or prop for the ironing board and an associated keeper plate; Fig. at is a central vertical section ,taken through the drawer section of 1920. Serial No. 396,539.
the trunk and showing the device in use as a drawer lock; Fi 5 is a similar sect-ion but showing the device in use as an ironing board, and Fig. 6 is a detail, vertical, fragmental section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Referring to said drawings, the reference character 7 designates the hanger or clothes section, and 8 the drawer section of a wardrobe trunk of ordinary and well known construction, these sections being hinged togather as usual along vertical edges, and being provided with a trunk look as is well understood.
In the drawer section 8, are slidably and removably supported a number of drawers or trays 9-10 for receiving articles of apparel, toilet articles or other articles, which it is desired to carry in the trunk.
The combined drawer locking device and ironing board which forms the subject matter of this invention is shown at 11 and comprises in general an ironing board 12 of suitable size and shape and a leg or prop 13 connected at one end to the ironing board, as by a hinge 13. Said ironing board may be of suflicient length to extend across all of the drawers, if desired, when held in an upright position and the lower end of the leg or. prop 13 as arranged to en ter a keeper or apertured plate 14, which is secured to the bottom 15 of the drawer section by screws or rivets 16. If desired the lower end of the leg or prop 18 may be reduced slightly to provide shoulders that may rest on the top of the apertured plate 14 whereby the device may be supported from the bottom' of the trunk when in use as a drawer locking device.
On the side of the ironing board adjacent the leg or prop 13 are secured the shanks 17 of two hooks 18 as by screws, rivets or the like, and said hooks are spaced apart sufliciently to receive the leg or prop 13 between them, whereby they act to prevent relative sidewise movement between the ironing board and legor prop while in drawer, locking position. The plate 14 is arranged to hold the ironing board against the drawers when .inlocking position, and thereby. prevent them from being opened.
Secured to the upper end of the ironing board, that is, the end to which the leg or prop ishinged, is a 1ock 19. w hich has a bolt 19 (preferably spring pressed) that is arranged to enter a keeper plate 20 secured to the underside of the top 21 of the drawer section 8. It will be understood that by placing the leg 13 in the plate 14;,
and snapping the bolt 19 of the lock 19 into the keeper plate 20 all of the drawers are locked against withdrawal.
To use the device as an ironing board, the
lock 19 is unlocked andthe leg 13 detached.
from the plate 1 1. The ironing board 12 is then moved into horizontalposition, the leg 13 swung down and the hooks 18 engaged with the top drawer 9. Preferably a notch .22 is formed in the front wall 23 of said top "drawer 9 through which the hooks 18 may vbe inserted. By engaging the hooks with the drawer at the notch, the ironing board is thereby held against sidewise movement. The notch also receives the casing of the lock 19 when it is used to lock the ironing board to the top 21. To prevent the top drawer from being pulled out while the device is being use separate latch or said top drawer,
drawer while the device is in use as an ironing board.
I have provided a separate keeper plate 26 on the front of the bottom drawer 10 I in position to receive the lower end of the I le or ro 13 when the ironin ioard is held in horizontal or ironing position. This provides means whereby the ironing board may be wholly supported by the drawer section of the trunk.
is open it locks the drawer.
To replace the device in drawer locking position, the hooks top drawer 9, the leg or prop 13 swung back against the ironing board, inserted in the plate 141, and the ironing board I against thedrawers bringing the bolt of the lock 19 into locking engagement with the keeper plate 20.
From the above it will be seenthat the device may be stored inthe drawer section,
during transportation I withoutv taking up any unnecessary space,
and when the trunk Further, that it may be. readily disconnected from the drawer section in its locking position and set up in ironing position.
Morefor less variation of the exact de-.
tails of construction is possible without departing from the spirit of this invention; 'des1re, theretore, not I the exact form of the construction shown 18 are detached from the 7 moved back.
to limit myself to connected tosaid ironing board and ably secured'to said'drawer section,
and described, but intend, in the following claims, to point out all of the invention disclosed herein.
