ZEROIZING DEVICE FOR CASH REGISTERS 0R CALCULATING MACHINES.

Be it known that I, ERNST BREITLING, residing at Essen, Germany, a citizen of the German Republic, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Zeroizing Devices for Cash Registers or Calculating Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cash registers or calculating machines of the kind comprising a plurality of totalizing counters, and it has more. 1 )articularly reference to zero setting devices for such registers or machines.
Now, the invention has for its object to provide a zero setting device for machines of the character stated which is of a construction such as to allow the totalizing counters to be simultaneously set to zero in an operation of the machine following the adjustment of a zero setting member.
The accompanying drawings illustrate, by way of example, an embodiment of the subject-matter of the invention as applied to a cash register comprising a plurality of totalizing counters arranged in a drum.

The cash register possesses the usual amount of keys, not shown in the drawing, and is besides provided with a series of sellers keys A (Figs. 4 and 5) and a series of five special keys B (Figs. 6 to 8) for the several lines of business as well as with a zero setting key B arranged above the lastmentioned keys. are mounted in a drum C Fastened t0 the shaft 0 of every totalizing counter is a zero setting pinion 0 (Figs. 1 to The pinions c are in positive connection with one another inasmuch as all of them are in mesh with a toothed wheel 0 mounted for rota tion on the drum shaft 0*. Two integral toothed wheels (P, d are mounted in the casing wall D (Fig. 3) co-axially with relation to the zero-setting pinion c or one of the totalizing counters. The toothed wheel d is adapted to be coupled with the zero setting pinion 0 by means of two swingingly arranged pinions E which are fastened to a bolt 6 The toothed wheel d is in positive connection with the main driving shaftF of the cash register by means of pinions f f (Figs. 1 and 2). The driving shaft F is provided with a crank handle I. The bolt 6 carrying the coupling pinions E, is mounted in the arm E of a bell crank lever E E the arm E of which is connected by a link 6 to an arm 6 fastened to a shaft 6 Rigidlv connected to the shaft- 6 is another arm E which is provided at its free end with a longitudinal slot 6 which is engaged by a pin g of the nut g of a lock G, which pin lies eccentrically with relation to the axis of rotation of the nut. The coupling pinions E are held in their respective positions by means of a pawl e mounted on the lever arm E and engaging one of the coupling pinions E under the action of a spring 6 A link 6 connects the lever arm E with an arm I2, fastened to a shaft H. The described connection of the bell crank lever E E with the nut g of the lock G and with the shaft H will permit the shaft H to be rocked and the coupling pinions E to be thrown into and out of op erative position by rotating the nut 9 The shaft H carries a locking cam h (Figs. 6 and 7) which is designed to cooperate with a pin 2' fastened to the arm J of a double-armed lever J J which is mounted in the key-bank B The lever arm J is adapted to act on a pin k of a. safety pawl K. The pawl K is fastened to a bolt k A spring 10 connected to the pawl, tends to hold same in engagement with a notch m (Figs. 5 and 7) of a cash register locking lever M which is mounted for oscillation on a shaft m and which, in its locking position, bears against a. locking arm N fastened to the register shaft N. The lever arm J is provided with an oblong-slot 2' which is engaged by a pin 72 of the zero setting key B Each of the special keys B is provided with a pin 1 Provided for cooperation with the zero setting key 3 and the special keys B are a lockin plate P, a locking rocker Q and a slide t. The locking plate P pivoted by one end to a lever m arranged on the m and carrying the locking bar m for the amount keys, while its other end is provided with a slot 29 through which projects a guide pin Z2 arranged on the key bank 13*. The locking plate P is provided with a slot 79 each for the key pin .7 and thekey pins a", the key pin enteringthe respective slot upon a key being depressed. lChe slot 72 for the pin Z2 is positioned with relation to the slots p for the pins 7) in such a manner that, according to the adjustment of the locking plate P, either the zero setting 'key B only or one of the special keys B can be depressed. In order to set the totalizing counters to zero, the lock G is opened. ln doing so, the nut g is turned and a swinging move ment imparted to the arm E which swing ing movement. is transmitted by means of: the shatt 0 the arm 6 and the link 6 to the bell crank lever E E and which causes the coupling pinions E to be brought into engagement with the toothed wheels (Z and 0 At the same time, the shaft H Will be rocked by means of the arm 7L connected through the link to the bell crank lever E in such a manner (Fig. 2) that the locking cam 71, releases the pin 1' and along with same the lever J J as well as the zero setting key B (Fig. 7). Also, the locking cam h' is placed in front of the face t of the latch T, so that the latter is locked in its locking position in which it holds the locking bar m for the amount key locking rockers and the prolongation a of the sellers key locking rocker A The locking plate P, which is pivotally connected to the locking bar m is thus held in a position in which. the zero setting key B but none of the special keys B can be depressed. The release of the cash register locking lever M for the zero set-ting cash register operations takes place in the first part of the movement of depression of the key B the safety pawl K being disengaged from the notch m of the locking lever hi by the action of the arm J of the lever J J on the pin In the further course of the movement of the key B its offset 6 willstrike against the slide R and, in the same manner as afore described with relation to a special key, it will cause the released locking lever M to rock in such a manner as to release the cash register locking arm N There upon, one revolution is imparted to all of the totalizing counter shafts c which are coupled with the cash register driving shaft F through the toothed wheels 0 0 E, (Z (Z f 7, for the purpose of simultaneously setting them to zero. The zero setting cash operation can. also be utilized to set a mark, influenced by the zero setting key, in the display and printing mechanism in a manner such as is well known for setting a sellers mark.
Claims: r
1. In a machine of the character stated, comprising an operating mechanism, a main driving shaft, a plurality of totalizing counters and zero setting pinions connected with the totalizing counters, a zero setting member, a driving member for simultaneously actuating the zero setting pinions of all totalizing counters and a member in the operating mechanism adapted to be moved by the main driving shaft and to be coupled with the said driving member upon adjusting the zero setting member, for the purpose of setting the totalizing counters to zero in the operation of the machine following the adjusting of the zero setting member.

In a machine of the character stated, comprising an operating mechanism, a main driving shaft, a plurality of totalizing counters and zero setting pinions connected with the totalizing counters, setting members including a zero setting member, a driving member for simultaneously actuating the zero setting pinions, and a member in the operating mechanism adapted to be moved by the main driving shaft, a lock for nor mally locking the zero setting member in inoperative position, said look when unlocked allowing the zero setting member to be released, the afore-said member of the operating mechanism to be coupled with the driving member for the zero setting pinions and the other set-ting members of the machine to be locked.
3. In a machine of the character stated, comprising an operating mechanism, a main driving shaft, a plurality of totalizing counters and zero setting pinions connected with the totalizing counters, setting members including a zero setting member, a driving member for simultaneously actuating the zero setting pinions, and a member in the operating mechanism adapted to be moved by the main driving shaft, a lock for normally locking the said zero setting memher in inoperative position, the nut of said lock being positively connected to a lever which is provided with pinions for coupling the zero setting pinions with the operating mechanism of the machine and which is positively connected to a shaft carrying looking cams adapted to lock locking members for the zero setting member and the other setting members of the machine in their locking position.

In a machine of the character stated, comprising an operating mechanism, a main driving shaft, a plurality of totalizing counters and zero setting pinions connected to the totalizing counters, amount keys, special keys, sellers keys and a zero setting key, a driving toothed wheel meshing with and adapted to simultaneously actuate the zero setting pinions, and another toothed wheel in the operating mechanism adapted to be rotated by the main driving shaft, a lock for normally locking the zero setting key in inoperative position, the nut of said lock being positively connected to a bell crank lever which is provided with pinions for coupling the zero setting pinions with the said toothed wheel of the operating mechanism of the machine and which is positively connected to a shaft carrying locking cams adapted to lock locking members for the zero setting key, the amount keys, special keys and sellers keys.
