14,299. Haddan, R., [National Cash Register Co.]. June 13. Cash registers.-Relates to machines for accumulating the totals borne by sets of detachable total-indicating elements, of the class to which Specifications 22,221/07 and 12,500/08 refer, and for printing grand totals thereof and also, if required, sub-totals of individual sets. Within the frame of each detachable set, the denominational slides 2, Fig. 10, are movable, and are normally wedged by springs towards the ' 9 ' position. They are differentially set by suitably-constructed cash-registers and locked by the pointed flange 4 of a pivoted spring plate 3. Upon pushing a detachable set into the machine, slides 33, Fig. 1, therein are differentially depressed against springs, thereby setting a type-sector 17 and a differential actuating-sector 91 for the subsequent printing of the total upon the detachable set and registering it upon the machine totalizer 104 when the handle of the machine is operated. Alining-pawls 81 are applied to the adjusted typesectors by link-work operated from the main shaft 42, the platen is operated, and other cam and link-work parts rock the totalizer frame 100 about its shaft 99 so that the receiving-pinions engage with the actuating-sectors, after which the alining-pawls are disengaged and a restoring-bail (not shown), mounted in arms upon a shaft 25, is rocked to restore the differential parts with accompanying actuation of the totalizer. Finally, the totalizer is disengaged. The amount slides of the detachable set may be restored to zero position at the time a total is taken by depressing a key 174, whereby the machine is enabled to release the spring latchplate 3 of the set in order that springs 12 attached to the differential members may reset the slides the action being ensured by the subsequent movement of the main restoring-bail. The detachable set is also unlocked for removal from the machine. Printing totals and sub-totals; zeroizing- mechanism.-To print a total, a hand-lever 134, Fig. 5, is rocked to cause flanges 130, 131 thereon to slide the totalizer spindle 126 axially and bring zeroizing-notches 127 therein into the plane of pawls 124 upon the pinions. An interlock is provided between the hand-lever and a shutter 133 for the detachable set aperture. whereby the insertion or presence of a set in the aperture is inconsistent with movement of the lever. The rotation of the totalizer spindle, while the pinions and actuating-sectors are engaged, in order to zeroize the totalizer and throw the total into the printing-sectors, is effected by the engagement of a pinion 144 on the totalizer spindle with a segment reciprocated by the main operating-shaft. Fig. 2 shows a cam 96 upon the main shaft 42 adapted to produce two rockings of the shaft 99 and thus two engagements of the totalizer during a single operating cycle. The first is employed, in total-printing operations, for throwing the total into the printing-sectors and restoring it to the totalizer, the second (which is normally idle) for again zeroizing the totalizer, which is immediately disengaged in this condition. Release of the total lever 134 between the two engagements results in the printing of a subtotal. The type - sectors, controlled by the identifying-blades of the detachable sets, are arranged to give no imprint when resetting occurs. Totalizer-wheels are provided in excess of the number of slides in a detachable set, and have transfer racks 91 which are normally locked, but are unlocked as an incident to totalprinting. The total lever also sets a special type. Interlocking.-To prevent withdrawal of a detachable set during an operation of the machine, a latch 150 co-operates with shouldered plates 151 of the detachable sets. Insertion of a set. through the roller 152, causes a slide 154 to lower and bring its shoulder 158 beneath a flange 159, whereby a shaft 161, Fig. 7, is rocked and a pin 165 enters a recess in a cam 167 upon the main operating-shaft. This latching is destroyed when the cam rocks the flangebearing arm 160, whereupon the slide 154 rises and permits ejection of the detachable set by the spring-actuated arm 155.
