wnnncn.
Application filed October 27, 1922. Serial No. 597,379.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTIS W. ORMSBY, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Hill City, in the county of Pennington and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved wrench for tightening the bolts that secure fish plates to rails, and particularlyto provide a device of this kind having novel means for adjustment of the operating lever. I attain these and other objects by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention in use;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1.; and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the invention from the reverse side of that shown in Fig. 1.
Like numerals designate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide opposite plates 1 and 4, rigidly connected by the metal straps 3 which extend across the rail. Mounted in spaced relation to plate 4 is a slotted arcuate plate 5 mounted on bolts or rivets 6. Plate 4 is provided. with an arcuate slot 8 with which the arcuate slot 7 of plate 5 is aligned. I provide an operating wrench member or handle 9 having a longitudinal slot 10, through which extends the bolt 11 which is mounted in slots 7 and 8 in which it is slidable throughout the entire arc of the slots. Wrench member 9 is provided with a wrench head 12 adapted to engage the nut 13 of bolt A...
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, I provide a suitable slot 13 in plate 1 to receive the head of the bolt which is to be tightened. To prevent the bolt from working out of place I provide a strap 2 attached to the exterior portion or" plate 1 and extending across the opening 13 to engage the outer surface of the head of the bolt A, as shown in Fig. 2.
The operation of the device will be understood from the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings. The device is positioned over the top of the rail with the slot 13 receiving the bolt head. The wrench handle 9 is operated manually, being slid longitudinally on member 11 until the head 12engages a nut. The
wrench handle is then manually operated .90 degrees, a third plate riveted to said slotted plate said third plate having a similarly aligned slot, a wrench handle, and a bolt extending through the wrench handle and through the slots in the aforesaid slotted plates, the bolt being slidable in the slots to permit of manual operation of the wrench.
2. A wrench of the class described, comprising spaced p1ates,one of the plates being slotted to receive the head of a bolt, straps rigidly connecting said plates, one of the plates extending substantially above the rail on which the wrench is used and having an arcuate slot, said slot extending through an arc of approximately 90 degrees, a spaced slotted guide plate having a like arcuate slot aligned with the first mentioned arcu ate slot, a wrench handle, a bolt extending through the arcuate slots and through the wrench handle to operatively connect the wrench handle with the plates, the bolt being slidable in the arcuate slots, and a slot in the wrench handle extending longitudinally oithe handle and through which the aforesaid bolt extends to permit of adjustment of the wrench handle to engage the nut to be tightened at varying positions relative to the top of the rail on which the wrench is mounted.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of rail-engaging means, said means being slotted to engage the head of a bolt, spaced plates mounted on said means, said plates having arcuate slots extending through an erect approximately degrees, a wrench having a longitudinal slot in the handle thereof, a bolt slidably mounted in said slotted portion of the wrench handle and also slidably mounted in the arcuate slots of the spaced plates, whereby to pen mit a wide range of operative movement of the wrench. Y
4:. In a device ot the class described, the
combination of rail engaging means includcuate slots when the Wrench is in use, a bolt ing means for engaging the head of a bolt, slidably mounted in all the aforesaid slots spaced plates afiixed to said rail-engaging and extending throughthe slotted portion 10 means, said plates having arcuate slots thereof the Wrench handle, for operation as herein, a Wrench having a slot extending longitofore described and shown.
tudinally of the handle thereof and extenda ing to a position opposite the aforesaid ar- OTIS W. ORMSBY.
