LOAD BINDER Filed April .21, 1-950 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Nov. 1, 1932' q STONEWALL aimonzreomiinr; orfoEnAR vALnkA sA's LOAD nmnnn n Application filed April 21,
This invent-ion relates to improvements in load binders for use in blnding pipes, poles, j
lumberand other heavy articles on trucks, wagons and other vehicles, and for use in lifting extremely heavyloads.
. provide means to compensate for excess strain when the binder is being adjusted about a load, and thus, permit of the binder 19 being tightly and securely positioned Without danger of damage. 7
Another object of the invention is the provision of means-to finally adjust the binder after the flexible member or tie'has been adjusted and prior to the tightening operatlon,
so that an accurate adjustmentmay be effected and relative movement ofthe articles or objects bound is prevented.
lVith the above and other obj ectsin View, j
the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construcy tion, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appendedclaim, In the drawings: v Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating the'invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary elevation illustrating the use of theinvention with the 2 parts in position prior to thetightening operation.
Figure 3 is a View similar to Figure 2 showing the position of the parts after the tightenin operatiom p I Figure 1 is a top plan viewof the binder with the parts imposition shown in Figure 3. Figure 5 is an enlarged? fragmentary secs tional View on the line 5 5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a detailed perspective View of the yoke. a Figure 7 is a like view ofv the inner end of the lever.
Figure 8 is a detailed perspective view of p the link.
in like characters of reference denote corre sponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a lever which includes a handle 11 and an offset or curved shank 12. Thisshank is bifurcated as sh'ownat 1-3 and pivotally seders 15 prevent the swinging of the "lever away from the link'whentlie load has been gw'ithinthe' openendof a yoke 21. This open. end o'ftheyokeis provided'in its opposite sides? with openings 'or" slots" 22, while ex 7;
Referring to the drawings in detail where- 7 i930. Serial No. 446,111.
The pivot l lis counter-sunk so as to be flush with' the outer sidesof' theshank l2. Swiveled within the outer end'of the'link '15is an ,55 An object of the present invention is'to eyeb'olt 16' the latteribeing held in position bya nut w q This eyebolt' carries a 11001: 1s, to hi'eh it is connectedby meansyof alink 19. The hook 18 thus has'afiexible' swiveled connec- 00 tion with the li'nk 15 andthishook is adapted witha laterally extending 'head 15i The hea'd 'is s'lotted' transve'rsely and the' outer wall'provided by the slot is formed with an op'ening'inwhich the threaded end of the eye.

It will also be 7 noted that the inner 'walls at the opposite 'si'des'fo'f the link 15 are-beveled, as at 15 andithe e angle'wallsv afford "rest'sffor' the shank of the leverand limitfthe lever inits *s i gin movement towardime link 15 as 'dis'closed byFigure 1 of thedrawings. As 'will'prejsentlybe apparent; this contacting engagement'of the outer angle edge of the shank 12 with the'angle surfaces or shoulbound in the manner hereinafter described. f' V fl Theshankl12- of thelever 10 is received tending into these j openings from one" of e s'arespaced eeth123 j The openings 22 are forthe 'passage of headed studs 24 which extend outwardly from opposite sidesof the shank 12 and which are adapted to engage the teeth 23. V The yoke 21 is thus adjustably and pivotally connected with the shank of the lever '10 and may be'removed and replaced uponthis lever icy-springing the sides of the yoke relatively outward. The closed end of the yoke is provided with a socket 25 within which is positioned a rubber or other compress-1 ible block 26. Extending through this block and through the adjacent end of the yoke 21, is the shank 27 of an eyebolt 28.
A washer 29 is mounted upon this shank and bears against the compressible member 26, While a nut 30 threadedly mounted upon the shank serves to hold the parts assembled.
Like the eyebolt 16 the eyebolt28 has con nected thereto through the medium of a link 31, a hook 33, and this hook is adapted to engage the end34 (if a chain or other-fiekible tie.-
The device is positioned around a 'Ioadof pipes 35, or'other heavy articles as shown in Figure 2 and the yoke'isadj'ustefd with respect to the studs 24 as previously mentioned; The lever 10 is then swung downward to the position shown in Figure3- and as the studs 24 are longitudinally offset with 1 respect to the pivot 14, these studs will pass the pivot sothat the lever willbe locked Y in position. Excess strain during the 1ocking operation will be compensated for by means of the compressible member 26 so as to, prevent damage to the parts. a The invention is susceptibleof various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim, I v
Having described the invention what is claimed is; H
In'a load binder, a lever having an off- 5 set end which is bifurcated to afford a shank,
a hook carrying link received within the furcation of the shanlg pivotally secured to the outer end thereof. and having its opposite end provided with a laterally extending head Vwhose inner walls are cut atan inclination to afford a rest for the shank when the lever is swung toward the "link, aifhoolocarrying yoke which is bifurcated and which has its parallel armsv adjacent 'one end; thereof slotted longitudinally, andone of theflongitudinal walls provided by the slots being formed with teeth and laterally extending headed studs on the shank designed to engage with the teeth of the yoke when the 550 arms of the yoke are spread outwardly with respect toeach' other to permit ofthe said yoke" being arranged over the shank and to receive in the slots thereof the said studs.
In testimonywhereof. I affix my signature.
