WILLIAM HANLEY, OF'EAST ORANGE, BROTHERS MANUFACTURING COIVI NEW' JERSEY, .ASSIG-NOR T0 FERGUSON i PANY, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
SMOKERS SET.
Application led December 27, 1920. Serial No. 433,351.
T 0 all fw tem' t may concer/11,:
Be it ltnovvn that I, VILLIAM H ANLEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Smokers Sets, of Which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide means for removably securing an ash tray to its support, the invention being particularly applicable to those trays of a readily breakable material carried on portable supports or stands which are liable to be knocked over, causing the release and breakage'ot the trays.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanyingdraivings, in connection With a portable smoker stand, in which,
F ig. l represents the stand in top plan.
F ig. 2 represents the upper portion of the stand inside elevation.
Fig. 3 represents a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 represents a section taken in the plane of the line IV-IV of F ig. l.
The upright o1- the stand is denoted by l and the recessed top by 2. The removable ash tray 3 is positioned in the recessed top 2 and it is held in suoli position against unintentional movement by suitable means.
In the embodiment herein represented, I have shown diametrically opposed cigar rests e, which project over the edges of the ash tray 3 and are provided With depending lugs 5 for preventing the unintentional release of the ash tray 3.
One or both of the cigar rests, in the prescnt instance both cigar rests are vertically yielding and rotatable to bring them into and out of locking engagement with the ash tray. This is provided for in the present instance by projecting the swivel pin 6 of the cigar rest downwardly through the top 2 into a recess 7 Where a spring 8 is interposed between the head of the pin and t-he bottom of therecess, a collar 9 being locatedv between the bottom of the rest and the top 2 of the stand. The top 2 Which forms the support for the ash tray may also be provided With a match box holder 10.
When it is desired to release the ash tray,
one or both of the cigar rests may be raised against the tension of the spring 8 to cause the depending lug 5 to clear the top of the tray. The cigar rest may then be rotated suilicient to permit the free removal of the ash tray.
It will be noted that one or more of theseV yielding cigar rests may be provided for securing the tray to its supportghence I do not Wish to limit myself to -tvvoyielding cigar rests as herein shown and described, nor do I Wish to limit myself to the particular means vfor yieldingly holding the cigar rests in their locking position.
Vhat I claim is zl. An ash tray, a support therefor, and cigar rests mounted on the support and projecting over the edges of the tray for securing it to its support, one or more of said cigar rests being movable to release the ash tray.
2. An ash tray, a support therefor, and cigar rests mounted on the support and projecting over the edges of the tray for securing it to the support, one or more of said rests being rotatable to release the ash tray. p
An ash tray, a support therefor, and cigar rests mounted on the support and projecting over the edges of the tray for securing it to the support, one or more oi' said rests being vertically yielding and rotatable to release the ash tray.
4. An ash tray, a support therefor. and cigar rests mounted on the support and projecting over the edges or" the tray for securing it to the support, one or more oi? said holders being movable torelease 'the tray and being provided With a depending lug projecting below the edge of the tray to prevent the unintentional movement of `the i. rests. y
5. An ash tray, a support therefor having a recess-ed top for receivingthe tray,` andA means 'for removably securing thetray in its'recessed top including a cigar rest mount`- y ed on the top and projecting over the edge of the tray and movable to release they tray.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my'invention, I have signed my Iname thisl 16th day of December, 1920.
WILLIAM HANLEY.
