Description

c. B. Y PARSONS HINGE Filed Sept. S 1921 4o Such cover-plates serve to give Patented De; 11,-1923.
uNiTED STATES PATENT oFFicE.-
CARL'B. PARSONS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGANl ASSIGNOR T0 PARSONS MANUFACTURING l COMRN'Y, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
HINGE.
Application nien september s, i921.
' To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, CARL B. PAnsoNs, citizen of the United States, residingA at Detroit, county of W'ayne, State of Michi- 5 gan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hinges, and declare the following to be a' full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to lo make; and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of 'this specification.
lMy invention relates to improvements in hinges. An object is to provide a hinge for outdoor use, such as the hinge used' in con- -nection with an automobile body door, so constructed that the exposed .part of the hinge, and particularly the joint, will-be protected from the weather, thereby pre-- 2o venting rust and corrosion of the hinge 'metal and especiall the joint.
A further object 1s to provide a hinge of such a character so constructed that the opening of the hinge will be limited to less than, 180 degrees, for example, approximatel 90 de rees therefore rotectin the side oi the cig' body from mutilation b? the swinging door. y
A further object is to provide in eonnec- 3o tion with the complementary hinged sections pivoted together t comprise a hinge, a supplemental cover-plate for one of said hinge sections turned over at one end to embraceV the hinge joint and overlapping said hinge sections at the joint onl one Vside at least; said cover-plate may likewise'be so constructed as to limit the outward swinging movement of the hinge vsections about their Apivot at such point as may be desired. thehinge a neat, clean cut appearance as of a unitary structure without any exposed working parts.
These and other objects, together with details of construction, will more fully appear from the following description, appended claims and accompanying drawing, in which:
.Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved hiilige. -bo ig. 2 is an end view of the hinge shown in Figl.
Fig.'3 is a plan view of one type of hinge construction.
-tions may be straig Serial No. 499,181.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on thel line 4.-4, Fig. 2. l
Fig. 5 is a plan view showing another form of the hinge in the closed position.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal 'section of the form of hinge shown in Fig. 5.'
In t e manufacture of hinges, it is old to construct a cast iron hinge in 'which one of the hinge sections is formed withf atransverse concavity at'- one end within which. is
pivoted the end of the complementary hinged section, ythereby protecting to a de# gree the'hinge from the weather. y .A
In my invention, I have devised a supplemental cover-plate for use in connection with the'conventional type of hinge, which cover-plate may Ibe made of a stamping and is not only adapted to serve as a cover for one of the hinge sections and to enclose the hinge joint, but is also adapted to limit the outward Swingin movement of the hinge when it is openedg.
My hinge comprises complementary hinge lsections a and b pivoted together at one end by means of a pivot lpin c. These hin -sect as shown in igs. 5 and 6, or curved as shown inFigs. 3 and 4. The hinge sections are perforated as at d tov provide apertures thru which fastening screws or nails hinge in'place to the door and door jamb. A
I provide a coverplate e which forms a complementary 'member for one'of the hinge sections and is turned over at the end as at f partially embracing the hinge joint as shown in the several figures of the drawing, particularly Figs. 2, 4 and 6. The cover late is likewise turned as at g* on one si e at least, to form a flange adapted to overlap the v.hinge sections at the joint and adjacent the hin e joint, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 5.
As s own in the several figures of the drawing, the cover plate is turned overgoiigfw each side forming opposed side flanges protective side flanges, it. iav apparent that may be passed to fasten the A the purpose might well beserved if it were mei-ely turned over on one side, such side being used as the top of the hinge when in place, the bottom of the'liinge being lett uncovered. A
Not only does my cover plate serve to protect the hinge at tlie joint from the action of the weather by embracing the pivoted ends of the hinge sections, and provide a hinge having a finished, clean appearance, but the turned over end of the plate at the joint serves as a stop to limit the outward swinging movement of one of the hinge sections, relative the other, when the hinge is opened, limiting the opening to less than 180 degrees, as here shown the opening of the hinge would approximate 90 degrees.
This' feature of limiting` the outward swinging movement of the hinge sections 'relative each other proves particularly useiilin automobile construction -Where these hinges are used to mount automobiledoors and during the movement of the car through the shopJ from one shop operation to aufv other, prior to the time the check straps are placed on the doors to limit the outward swinging movement thereof, the doors fre-4 uently accidently swing open and unless t ere is some means of limiting the openf ings, strikes the side of the vehicle body, in many instances marring or mutilating the same. My form of hinge prevents the. occiii'i'cnce ot' sach accidents.
What. I claim is:
1. ln a hinge having a. pair of hinge members provided with interengaging knuckles connected together by a pivot pin, a cover plate channelled to receive one of said hinge members, which channel -is provided at the outer end with a hood which eiieloses the hinge joint.
'2.' In a hiiigev'having a pair of hinge members pivoted together at one end, an independent cover plate channelled to receive both hinge members when folded together. which vchannelis closed at the outer end forming al pocket which substantially encloses the hinge joint.
3. In a hinge comprising a pair of hinge members "pivoted together at ,one end, a cover plate secured tonne of said members having a hoodfat the outer end to enclose the hinge joint. -f
4. In a. hinge comprising a pair of hinge Vmembers pivoted together, a channel cover plate carried by one of said members, the channel of which is closed at the outer end to form a pocket which encloses the hinge;
