BAG-HANDLING IMPLEMENT.
Application filed June 26, 1822. Serial No. 570,892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS C. PAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Handling Implements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bag handling implements and more particularly to an implement especially applicable for separating filled bags that may have become stuck together while being stored standing side by side.
Very often, bags containing various substances, such for instance as nitrate of soda,
adhere or become stuck to one another when placed side by side and packed close together, rendering it difiicult to handle the bags and an object of the present invention is to provide an instrument for facilitating the separation and handling of bags under such conditions.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side view of an implement constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a. detail view of the bag engaging member.
The tool or implement consists generally of a handle 10 which, when the tool is in use,
constitutes a lever of the second kind, the fulcrum for said handle or lever being at one end while the power is applied at the opposite end and the load is imposed at a point intermediate said ends.
In loosening a bag, the fulcrum end of said handle 10 rests on the top of the filled bag and to give said end a firm bearing on the bag a fulcrum piece 11 is provided on. the handle. Preferably said fulcrum piece 11 is made of a comparatively large, rectangular flat piece of material attached by suitable fastening means such as bolts to a metallic band 12 surrounding the handle 10.
The bag engaging member for pulling or so dislodging one bag from the next adjacent bag preferably consist of a plate 13 having a plurality of prongs 14 mounted thereon.
Said plate 13 is mounted on the lower end of I an arm 15 which, when the tool is in use, depends from the handle to allow the plate to engage the side of the bag and which is connected to the handle 10 in such manner as to allow the bag engaging plate-to move or swing towards and away from the fulcrum piece. This is preferably accomplished by pivotally securing arm 15 at its upper end to a metallic band 16 surrounding handle 10. The fulcrum piece 11 and bag engaging plate 13 are so positioned longitudinally of the handle lever 10 as-that when the fulcrum piece is placed on top of a bag the prongs 14 on the member 13 will penetrate and grip the side of the bag. When the parts have been positioned on a bag in this manner an. upward movement of the handle 10 will dis lodge the bag sufficiently to pull it loose from the next adjacent bag.
To insure the prongs 1e penetrating the bag and taking a secure grip on the same, the outer or lower end of arm 15 which carries member 13 is offset towards the fulcrum piece 11 with the result that the gripping member 13 will always tend to move or swing towards the fulcrum end of the handle, due to the center of gravity of said member being located between the pivotal centerv thereof and said fulcrum piece.
' What is claimed is:
1. In a bag handling implement, the combination of a handle, a fulcrum piece mounted adjacent one end of the handle, and a bag engaging member carried by the handle, and disconnected from the fulcrum piece said member comprising an arm pivoted at one end to the handle and provided at its opposite end with a gripping plate adapted to engage the side of a bag, there being a plurality of gripping projections carried by said grlpping plate.
