UNITED STA'rns ATEN'r 'rr'ron REGINALD R. PARKER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, IXDIAA.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIES.
specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,682, dated February 17, 1874; application filed January 24, 1874. i
To all 'whom 'it may co'ncern:
Be it known that I, REGINALDR. PARKER, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and linproved Neck-Tie, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying dra\\'ing,1igure l represents a rear view of a neck-tie or how with my paper facing applied to the rear edge; and Fig. 2 is a Vertical transyerse section through the edge part, on the line c c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicatc correspondin'g parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish an iniproved necktie or how, the ends of which are stifi'ened in such a manner that they are prevented from hecoming limp, or wrinkled, or curled to the outside, while protecting, also, the raw edge, and imparting to the whole how a neater and more durable shape.
Hitherto, in making bows, the fabric had to be creased by hand along the edges of the corners before the same was put into the machine to be stitched, involving a great deal of hand work, and necessitating the exposure of a raw edge, which is continually raveling out, showing threads of silk hanging down, so as to greatly impair the neatness of the how or tie. The corners also turn inside out and assume a very unsightly appearan'ce, so that the wearing of the bow or tie has to be dispensed with long before the same is actuall y worn out 'by use.
For the purpose of avoiding these annoying features of the how, as at present manufactured, I intend to apply a binding or facing of paper or other suitable material to the under side of the corners, so as to protect the raw edge and stiffen the same.
In the drawing, A-represents the neck-t-ie or bow, of the usual material and construction, which is provided with facings or hindings B, of paper, pasteboard, tape, wire, ribbon, leather, or similar material, for stiffening and protecting the corners of the how.
The facings B may be cut, folded, or stamped, of any color corresponding to that of the bows, and stitched, sewed, pastcd, or otherwise attached, as may be found best. The facings may also be so applied that the stitching does not show at the front side, which produces neater work, and saves time, and cost, and lahor, as the time for changing thread and matching the different colors of silk thread to the bows is gained, and cotton thread of all one color, instead of silk thread of different colors to match, may bc used for all colors of the hows.
The paper facings should be so attached that they do not show sidewise, which is most completely obtained by turning them hack on the under side over the stitching, and folding them away from the outside edge or border of the how.
By the use of such paper facings, a neater and more serviceable how or tie is obtained.
Hang thus descrhed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- ,As a new article of manufacture, a neck-tie or bow provided at the under side of the cor` ners with protecting and stiffening facings or bindings, of paper or other suitable material, applied in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
RE GINALD R. PARKER.
