UNHTED STATES ABRAHAM (JOHN, 013 ST. LOUIS MISSOURI.
COMBINED CUSHION SHfiE HEEL AND ARCH SUPPORT.
Application filed September 5, 1922. Serial No. 586,190.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM CoHN, owing allegiance to the Republic of Poland, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combined Cushion Shoe Heels and Arch Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined tallic heel section, and, to which plate or lift, a leather heel section, or rubber heel section may be secured in the usual manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide the metallic ring like heel section with an integral arch support having its side edges notched or recessed to accommo---- date fastening means for securing the rear end of a outer, or half sole thereto.
A still further and important object of the invention is to provide a cushioning means adapted to lie between the metallic heel section and the inner sole of the shoe, said cushioning means consisting of a relatively thick flanged heel portion adapted to fill the opening of the ring like heel section, a comparatively thick arch portion for covering the arch supporting portion of the metallic heel section and a comparatively thin palm portion extending forward from the arch supporting portion adapted to lie between the inner and outer sole of the shoe.
A still furtherobject of the invention is to provide the cushion means with a plurality of openings or perforations to form air pockets in the cushion means to'render the cushion means more resilient and pneumatic.
Withthe above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein like characters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views:
Fig. 1, is a perspective view of a combined metallic heel section and arch support embodying my invention.
Fig. 2, is a bottom plan view thereof with the attached parts partly broken away.
Fig. 3, is a vertical sectional View of a shoe provided with my improved heel and arch supporting structure.
Fig. 4, is a plan view of the cushion means.
Fig. 5, is a side elevation thereof with portions broken away.
Fig. 6, is a sectional-view of the cushion means taken on line 66 of Fig. 4, which is the arch supporting section of the cushion means. 1 4
Referring to the drawings, the reference character A designates a portion of the upper of a shoe, or boot; B, the inner sole thereof and C, the outer sole.
In carrying out the aim of my present invention, I employ a combined heel section and arch support, preferably molded, or die I cast of aluminum, so as to render the same light in weight, yet strong and durable. While I have illustrated the form of a device more particularly adapted for mens" shoes, I wish it to be understood that'other types of heel sections may be employed.
My present invention consists of arch.- tively thin metallic heel section 1 having the contour of the heel portion of the shoe upper A. The heel section 1 is provided with a central opening 2 passing completely through the heel, as clearly shown'in Fig. 1. The upper face of the wall. of the heel section is provided with a marginal recess, or channel 3 and the inner wall 4 of the channel lies at a plane below the plane of the outer wall 5 thereof. p
The forward end of the heel section 1 is provided with a transversely disposed slotted opening 6 which passes completely through the heel section and which is separated from the central opening 2 by means of the partition 7.
A leather filler 8,v or its equivalent is disposed in the recess or channel 3 and a. leather plug, or filler 9, or its equivalent is disposed in the slotted passage {5. 'The lower shoe A to the arch support.
A suitably shaped arch support, or shank 14 extends forwardly from the forward end of the heel section 1 and integral therewith, and has its side edges provided with suitable laterally directed marginal slots 15 for securing the outer sole C of the The forward end of the arch support is further provided with a plurality of openings 17 for the re- 3 ception of additional anchoring or fastenleather filler 8, as shown in Fig. 3.
ing means 18, when their use is desired. A suitable cushion means is employed with my improved heel structure and forms an important part thereof. This will now be described.
The cushion means comprises a heel section 19 of the same contour as the central opening 2 of the metallic heel section and is disposed therein so'as to lie between the leather heel plate 13 and the inner sole B of the shoe upper A, as shown in Fig. 3. The heel portion 19 of the cushion means is provided with a plurality of vertically disposed air passages or openings 20, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The heel portion of .the cushion means is provided with a flange 21 adapted to lie upon Itlhe 4X- tending forwardly from the heel portion 19 and its flange 21 is a relatively thick arch supporting portion 22 having the air receiving openings 23. The upper face of this portion is flat while the lower face thereof is longitudinally and transversely curved to conform to the shape of the wearers arch, asshown in Figs. 5 and 6,'and to fit the face contour of the metallic arch support 14 which is an integral part of the metallic heel section 1. This section of the cushion means is adapted to lie between the upper face of the arch support and the inner sole B, as shown in Fig. 3.
Extending forwardly from the arch supporting portion of the cushion means is a palm section 24 having air receiving opening 25 which is adapted to lie between the inner and outer soles of the shoe.
To complete the heel structure of a shoe, a rubber. or other suitable heel 26 is secured to the leather plate 13 by means of suitable fastening devices 27, which devices are adapted to pass through the leather filler plugs 8 and 9, rubber flange 21 and be clinched over the inner Sole B, as is manifest.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that I provide a heel and arch structure having a cushion effect upon the wearer, thus eliminating shocks directly to the wearers heel and arch from the impact of walking. Owing to the cushion means covering the entire area of the foot, especially the heel and arch, shocks upon the heel and arch will be distributed over an area absorbed by a relatively large intermediate surface so that the shocks will be felt to a very small degree, if at all by the wearer, thus adding great comfort to the wearer whether walking, running'or standing still. The auxiliary air cushion means aiding the resilient cushion means adds greatly to the resiliency of the cushion means.
The many advantages of the herein described invention will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
I do notdesire to be understood as limiting myself to thp exact details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made without departing from thespirit and scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims, hence I wish it to be understood that I reserve ,the right to make any such changes, or modifications as may fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims when fairly construed.
