14 Claims. (Cl. Bti-30) This invention relates to shoes and to outsoles therefor.

One object of the invention is to provide a shoe with a composite water-proof outsole of substantial thickness and having a cushion disposed within a recess in the outsole defined by an integral upstanding peripheral side wall.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a shoe having an outsole of the character described and which is constructed with an external peripheral recess in which an edging strip is positioned for covering the outer surface of the upstanding wall of the outsole.

A further object of the invention is to provide a shoe with a composite outsole provided with an external peripheral recess in which an edging-strip is secured, whereby the outsole can be molded and thereafter provided with selected edge finishing strips to provide outsoles of varying appearance depending upon the particular edging strip disposed in said recess. A more specific object of the invention in this connection is to provide an outsole which has an edging strip of lbraided rope whereby the outsole has the appearance of a rope sole.

The invention also has for one of its objects the provision, as new articles of manufacture, of outsoles embodying one or more of the above described features.

The above objects of the invention and other objects which might hereinafter appear will be fully understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying illustrated drawing.

Referring now to the drawing in further detail, and first to the form of the invention illustherefor. The insole is preferably formed of leather, and the sock lining I8 is preferably formed of fabric especiallywhen the upper is madeof fabric, inwhich case the sock lining can be made of the same'fabric to match the upper.

Theoutsole I4 comprises an outer part formed of waterproof material preferably rubber having fibrous material such as, for example, sisa1 fibers dispersed therethrough. Said outer part comprises a bottom 20 and an integral upstanding peripheral wall 22 and is formed preferably by molding the rubber composition in a suitable mold and simultaneously vulcanizing the same during the molding operation. As here shown the upper surface 24 of bottom 20 is raised-in the shank and heel portion of the outsole above the forward part=of the outsole as indicated by the dotted line in Fig. l whereby to provide said outsole with a heel and shank part 28 of the wedge type. The bottom surface 30 of said outsole is flat and is provided with shallow corrugations molded` therein to form a non-slip tread surface.

In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 3 to 5, the shoe IIIA is constructed substantially in the same way as the shoe Ill described above with the exception that the upstanding wall 22a of the molded part of the outsole Mais disposed inwardly of the outer edge of the outsole thereby to provide an external recess for receiving an edging vstrip 34 which extends completely around the outsole and covers upstanding' wall 22a of the outsole. As here shown said edging strip is formed of braided rope whereby said outsole has the appearance of a rope sole. Except as just described the outsole illustrated in Figs. 3, 4 and .5 and the shoe illustrated in said gures are of the same .construction as the shoe described'abovewith reference to Figs. 1 and 2.

As illustrated in Fig. 6 the shoe need not have a heel and shank portion of the wedge type. Thus, as here shown, the shoe IDB has an outsole IMJ of uniform thickness for the full length thereof. Fig. 4 illustrates the cross section of the outsole shoe IUB, said cross section being uniform for the full length of the outsole. The rope edging strip 34, which extends completely around the shoe as described above in reference to Figs. 3 to 5, imparts to the outsole the appearance of a rope sole, the peripheral edge portion 36 being relatively thin in comparison to the overall depth of the composite outsole.

Further, the corrugations 3U provided in said outsole assist in the simulation of the rope sole.

In Figs. 7 and 8 the outsoles I 4c and I4d are of the same construction as the outsole I4a illustrated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 or can be of uniform thickness as illustrated in Fig. 6, except that in the outsoles here shown the upstanding walls are pro-- vided in the case of outsole I4c with an outwardly projecting lip 38 and in the case of outsole I4d with an outwardly projecting lip 40 and with an inwardly projecting lip 42. In Fig. 7 the lip 38 defines together with the side wall 22a and the projecting edge 36 of the bottom of the outsole a U-shaped recess in which the edging strip 44 is disposed. Said edging strip can be formed of any suitable material as, for example, leather, rubber or fabric and can have any desired shape or appearance. In Fig. 8 the outwardly projecting lip 40 defines an external recess like that shown in Fig. 'l for an edging strip 46 while the inwardly projecting peripheral lip 42 overlies the marginal edge portion of the pad or cushion 32 and provides a surface for the attachment of the marginal edge portion of the upper.

In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 the separate pad 32 is dispensed with, and the outsole I4e is provided with a plurality of laterally spaced longitudinally extending ribs 48 molded integrally with the bottom of the outsole and the peripheral upstanding wall 22e. Said upstanding wall 22e is also provided with an inwardly projecting peripheral rib 49. Said Wall 22e is positioned to provide an external recess for an edging strip 50 which extends completely around and covers Wall 22e. If desired, however, said edging strip can be omitted and wall 22e can be positioned at the extreme outer edge of the sole. The upper I2 and the insole I6 is secured to the upper edge of wall 22a and to the upper surface of the rib 49 thereof and, of course, said insole extends for the full width and length of the shoe and is supported in position by wall 22e and longitudinally extending ribs 48. In lieu of ribs 4B which are continuous and extend longitudinally of the shoe other forms of upstanding portions can be provided for supporting insole I6. While the sole I4e is shown in Fig. 9 as provided with a wedge shaped shank and heel portion like the sole in Fig. 1, it will be understood that said outsole I4@ can be fiat like, for example, outsole I4b.

It will be understood that the shoes and outsoles illustrated herein and described above can be varied in appearance and in construction unless otherwise specified in the claims. It will be understood further that while outsoles provided with internal recesses for cushioning pads are preferred, the invention, particularly in respect to the provision of the edging strips, can be embodied in outsoles devoid of internal recesses and not provided with cushioning pads, said outsoles having, however, external recesses in which edging strips of the desired appearance are secured. Thus, whether or not the outsoles having edging strips are provided with internal recesses for cushioning pads, said outsoles can be made of uniform construction except as to size and thereafter provided with the edging strips as may be desired. It will be understood further that while I have shown and described several preferred forms of my invention the latter may be embodied otherwise than as herein specifically illustrated or described. Accordingly, I do not Wish to be limited to the invention as herein shown or described except to the extent which may be required by the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A shoe comprising an outsole having a molded part including a bottom and a peripheral side wall upstanding from said bottom and defining an internal recess, a pad of relatively soft material disposed in anu filling said recess, the upper surface of said pad being substantially flush with the upper peripheral edge of said side wall, the outer peripheral surface of said side wall being spaced inwardly of the outer peripheral edge of said bottom and defining an external recess, said recess being open at one side thereof adjacent the peripheral edge of the outsole, and an edging strip disposed in said external recess and covering said outer surface of said side wall, and an upper secured to said outsole.

2. A shoe comprising an outsole having a molded part including a bottom and a peripheral side wall upstanding from said bottom and deiining an internal recess, a pad of relatively soft material disposed in and filling said recess, the upper surface of said pad being substantially flush with the upper peripheral edge of said side Wall, the outer peripheral surface of said side wall being spaced inwardly of the outer peripheral edge of said bottom and defining an external recess, and an edging strip of braided rope disposed in said external recess and covering said outer surface of said side wall, and an upper secured to said outsole.

3, A shoe comprising an outsole having a bottom and a peripheral side wall upstanding from said bottom and defining an internal recess, a pad of relatively soft material disposed in and filling said recess, the upper surface of said pad being substantially iiush with the upper peripheral edge of said side wall, the heel and shank portion of said bottom being thicker than the forward portion thereof, the outer peripheral surface of said side wall being spaced inwardly of the outer peripheral edge of said bottom and defining with the latter an external peripheral recess open at the side, an edging strip disposed in said external recess and covering said outer surface of said side wall, and an upper secured to said outsole.

An outsole having a bottom and a peripheral side wall upstanding from said bottom and defining an internal recess, the upper surface of said bottom having a heel and shank portion which is higher than the forward portion thereof, a pad of relatively soft material disposed in and filling said recess and secured to said bottom, the outer peripheral surface of said side wall being spaced inwardly of the outer peripheral edge of said bottom and defining with the latter an external peripheral recess open at the side, and an edging strip disposed in said external recess and covering said outer surface of said side wall.

An outsole having a molded part including a bottom and a peripheral side wall upstanding from said bottom and defining an internal recess, a pad of relatively soft material disposed in and filling said recess and secured to said bottom, the upper surface of said pad being substantially flush with the upper peripheral edge of said side wall, the outer peripheral surface of said side wall being spaced inwardly of the outer peripheral edge of said bottom and defining an external recess, said recess being open at one side thereof adjacent the peripheral edge of the outsole, and an edging strip disposed in said external recess and covering said outer surface of said side wall.

An outsole having a molded part including a bottom and a peripheral side Wall upstanding from said bottom and defining an internal recess, a pad of relatively soft material disposed in and filling said recess, the upper surface of said pad being substantially iiush with the upper peripheral edge of said side wall, the outer peripheral surface of said side wall being spaced inwardly of the outer peripheral edge of said bottom and delining an external recess, and an edging strip of braided rope disposed in said external recess and covering said outer surface of said side wall.

7. An outsole having a molded part including a bottom and a peripheral side wall upstanding from said bottom and defining an internal recess, a pad of relatively soft material disposed in and filling said recess, the upper surface of said pad being substantially flush with the upper peripheral edge of said side wall, the outer peripheral surface of said side wall being spaced inwardly of the outer peripheral edge of said bottom and having an outwardly projecting lip extending therearound at the upper edge thereof, the outwardly projecting edge portion of said bottom and side wall defining an external recess open at the side, and an edging strip disposed in said external recess and covering said outer surface of said side Wall.

8. A shoe comprising an outsole having a molded part including a bottom and a peripheral side wall upstanding from said bottom and dening an internal recess, a pad of relatively soft material disposed in and filling said recess, the upper surface of said pad being substantially iush with the upper peripheral edge of said side wall, the outer peripheral surface of said side Wall being spaced inwardly of the outer peripheral edge of said bottom and having an outwardly projecting lip extending therearound at the upper edge thereof, the outwardly projecting edge portion of said bottom and side wall defining an external recess open at the side, and an edging strip disposed in said external recess and covering said outer surface of said side wall, said side wall also having an inwardly directed lip at the upper edge thereof, and an upper secured to said outsole.

9. A shoe comprising an -outsole having a lower peripheral edge portion and an upper peripheral edge portion disposed inwardly of said first mentioned edge portion and defining an external peripheral recess extending around the edge of the outsole, and an edging strip of braided rope secured in said recess and extending completely around and covering said upper edge portion of the outsole, the height of said upper peripheral edge portion being substantially greater than the height of said lower peripheral edge portion and Cil said last mentioned edge portion being positioned below the lower edge of said braided rope, and an upper secured to said outsole.

10. An outsole having a lower peripheral edge portion and an upper peripheral edge portion disposed inwardly of said rst mentioned edge portion and dening an external peripheral recess extending around the edge of the outsole, and an edging strip of braided rope secured in said recess and extending completely around and covering said upper edge portion of the outsole, the height of said upper peripheral edge portiong being substantially greater than the height of said lower peripheral edge` portion and said last mentioned edge portion being positioned below the lower edge of said braided rope, said braided rope being of greater width than thickness and lying in said recess so that its width extends in the direction of the height of said recess.

11. An outsole comprising a molded member having a bottom and a peripheral side wall upstanding from said bottom and spaced inwardly of the peripheral edge of said bottom to provide an external recess, and an edging strip of braided rope secured in said recess and extending around and covering said side wall, the height of said upper peripheral edge portion being substantially greater than the height oi` said lower peripheral edge portion and said last mentioned edge portion being positioned below the lower edge of said braided rope, said braided rope being of greater width than thickness and lying in said recess so that its width extends in the direction oi the height of said recess.

An outsole comprising a molded member formed of water-proof material, said molded member having a bottom and a peripheral side wall upstanding from said bottom and spaced inwardly of the peripheral edge of said bottomto provide an internal recess and an external recess, and an edging strip of braided rope secured in said external recess and extending around and covering said side wall.

13. A shoe comprising an outsole, an insole andan upper, said outsole having a bottom and an upstanding peripheral wall and a plurality of members integral with and extending upwardly from said bottom between the opposite sides of said peripheral wall for supporting said insole, said peripheral wall being spaced inwardly of the outer peripheral edge of said bottom and defining an external recess open at the side thereof adjacent the peripheral edge of the outsole, and an edging strip positioned in said recess and extending around said peripheral wall.

14. A shoe comprising an outsole having a molded part including a bottom and a peripheral side wall upstanding from said bottom and defining an internal recess, the outer peripheral surface of said side wall being spaced inwardly of the outer peripheral edge of said bottom and having an outwardly projecting lip extending therearound at the upper edge thereof, the outwardly projecting edge portion yof said bottorn and side wall dening an external recess open at the side, and an edging strip disposed in said external recess and covering said outer surface of said side wall, said side wall also having an inwardly directed lip at the upper edge thereof, and an upper secured to said outsole.
