W. M. NEWTON ATTACHMENT FOR WHEELBARROWS Filed Oct. 23. 1922 Patented Dec. 4, 1923.
sire ears WALTEREYT. NEWTON, OF DQVEB, DELAW'ARE.
ATTACHMENT FOR. WHEELBA'BROWS.
Application filed October 23, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER M. NEWTON,
a citizen of the United States, residing attus and has for its object the provision of an attachment to a wheel barrow whereby it may. be used as a hoisting bucket of the side dumping type, the attachment consisting of a bail with suitable brackets for connection with the wheel barrow and equipped with an attaching ring together with a latch mechanism for preventing the wheel barrow from undesired dumping or tilting.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in'manufacture, easy to install, eificient and durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: 7
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the applied to a wheel barrow,
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a front elevation and Figure 4 is a detail cross section on the line 44.- of Figure 1. V
Referring more particularly to the drawings the letter A designates a wheel barrow having the usual receptacle portion B mounted upon converging bars C. provided with legs D and carrying a wheel E.
In carrying out my invention I provide a U-shaped bail of a length to extend beyond the ends of the receptacle B- and provided at substantially its center with a clevis 11 serving as attaching means for a hoisting device cable or the like.
Serial No. 596,389.
wheel barrow is held elevated it may be tipped to one side or the other to effect dump-ingof the contents from the body ]3. It should be stated that the clevis 11 is at such a position that when the loaded wheel barrow is suspended it will remain in horizontal position and the pivot points 13 and 17 should be slightly above the center of gravity of the receptacle B when loaded.
It is of course necessary to provide some means for preventing accidental tipping or dumping and to accomplish this I provide a leaf 19 hinged at 20 at the forward upper edge of the receptacle and formed with a notch or slot 21 which engages upon the forward arm of the bail for holding the bail rigid with respect to the wheel barrow. The use of the device is obvious and it is apparent that when the wheel barrow has been filled with any desired material and elevated, swinging of the leaf 19 out of engagement with the bail will permit the wheel barrow body to be tilted to one side or the other for dumping the contents. In actual practice the device will be found of great advantage in a wide variety of places, for many purposes and under conditions where other hoisting apparatus is unavailable, too costly or too heavy, the device being naturally a great time and labor saver.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in thevform, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the in vention or the scope of the subjoined claims. Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. Means for converting a wheel barrow into a dumping hoisting bucket, comprising bracket members. designed to be secured upon the wheel barrow bars at the opposite ends of the receptacle body, and a bail pivotally connected with said brackets and provided with hoisting cable attaching means. 2. Means for converting a wheel barrow into a dumping hoisting bucket, comprising bracket members designed to be secured upon the wheel barrow bars at the opposite ends of the receptacle body, and a bail pivotally connected with said brackets and provided with hoisting cable attaching means, and means for holding the bail rigid with respect tothe wheel barrow body.
3. Means for converting a wheel barrow into a, dumping hoisting bucket, comprising bracket members designed to be secured upon the Wheel barrow bars at the opposite ends of the receptacle body, and a bail pivotally connected with said brackets and provided with hoisting cable attaching means,
1 and means for holding the bail rigid with respect to the Wheel barrow body, consisting of a leaf hinged upon one end of the Wheel barrow body and formed With a slot engagl0 ing upon the adjacent arm of the bail.
In testimonywhereof I afix my signature.
WALTER M. NEWTON.
