' LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Application filed February 1, 1922. Serial No.533,403.
T 0 all whom z't may concern:
-Be it known that I, l/VALTER REGINALD HORSFIELD, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Kalamazoo Works, Northfield, in the city of Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Loose- Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved loose leaf binder ofjthe type in which flexible binding thongs adapted to pass through apertures in the leaves are permanently attached to one of the covers and detachably secured to the other by gripping devices.
, In the three accompanying sheets of explanatory drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation and Figure 2 a plan with one cover open showing a loose lea-f binder constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 3 is a plan showing in detail one of the thong gripping devices in the operative position, and Figure 4 is a cross section or the said device.
Figure 5 is a plan showing the gripping device released.
Figures 6-10 are respectively similar views to Figures 1-5 illustrating a modified form of my throng gripping devices.
Referring to Figures 15 the binder consists of a pair of covers a, 5, between which the sheets 0 are secured by. a pair of flexible thongs (Z, The thongs are permanently attached at one end to the cover 7) and after passing through notches at the rear portions of the leaves and the clamping strips 6 are inserted through gripping devices attached to the other cover a.
Each gripping device is made from a' piece of sheet metal f folded on itself and slotted for the insertion through it of a binding thong. This portion may be at tached to the adjacent clamping strip a, or it may be free. The edge 9 of the slot acts on one side of the thong, and at the other side of the slot is arranged between the faces of the main portion a slidable steel plate It adapted to act on the other'side of the thong. This plate atits rear edge is shaped to provide an abutment for a cam like swelling *5 on arotary spindle j (preferably produced from a length of steel wire) which is common to the two gripping devices. A portion lcfof the spindle is bent to serve as a finger piece. On rotating. the spindle the sliding plates of the two grip ping devices can be forced tightly on to the thongs or released. 1 I
The spindle may also serve as a hinge pin for attaching the gripping devices to the cover. In this case the spindle is made sufiiciently long to permit of its being bound or otherwise attached in a rotatable manner to the cover, and the rear edges of the main portion of the gripping devices are adapted to swivel on the spindle. v
In the alternative construction shown in Figures 610 the two gripping devices are connected to the cover a by a plain spindle j which also forms the hinge for the cover, and each gripping device is made independently operable. For actuating the movable plate h (which in this form is shown with a serrated gripping edge) the portion f has hinged on it a flap Z which is formed with a cam like portion m adapted to act on the said plate it. On raising the flap the gripping plate is re'leased from the thong. To secure the thong the flap is turned down as shown in Figures 6, 7, 8 and 10 and thereby caused to advance the plate 72, against the adjacent side of the thong. In this construction the main portions of the gripping devices are formed integrally with the clamping strip 0.
y this invention I am able to produce at small cost serviceable binders which are very convenient for? purposes for which binders of more complex construction are unsuited.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. A loose leaf binder including a cover board, a flexible thong connected to said cover, a thong gripping device comprising a folded sheet metal main portion formedv with a slot forthe passage of the thong, a transversely movable clamping plate arranged in said main portion and movable toward and away from one of the walls of said slot for clamping the thong in the slot, a second coverboard, a pintle for hingedly securing the second board to said thong gripping device, and a rotatable cam associated with said pintle for forcing the clamping plate towards the thong.
2. A loose leaf binder including a cover board,-;aplurality of flexiblethongs secured to said cover board and spaced'relativelyto one another,'a plurality of thong-gripping devices,eacl1 of said thong-gripping devices includinga folded sheet'metalmein portion formed with a SlOtTor'the'passage'efbne of the thongs, sliding plates arranged insaid main portions for clamping the thongs, a second cover board, w pintle for-securing said second cover board to said thong gripping dev ices, and cam portions associated 4 name to this specification. t
with said pintle for forcing-theclamping plat'es into clamping -.-p0siti6n.
3. A loose leaf binder as claimed in claim fiom'af'single pieceofwirebent to form an opera-ting handle.
In testimony whereof I have signed my W ALTER REGINALD HORSFI ELD.
