Description

A. HODEL CHIMNEY CAP Dec. 4,1923. 1,476,613
Filed Aug. 2 6, 1921 Patented Dec, a, 19.23,
i ramen ADOLF HODEL, OF WAHPETON, NORTH DAKTA.
CHIMNEY CAP.
Application filed August 26, 1921. Serial No. 495,644. i
To all whom t may concern Be it known that ADOLF HODEL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at TvVahpeton7 in the county of Richland and State of North Dakota, has invented new and useful lmprovements in Chimney Caps, of which the following is a specification. Y
The object of the invention is'to provide a simple and efficient chimney cap or cowl whereby the downward beating of rain or wind due to counterdrafts are excluded from the chimney flue and whereby side winds tending to cause downdrafts are deflected in such a way as to induce upward drafts by suction and thereby increase the draft efficiency of the chimney; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings7 wherein:
Fioure l is a side view of a chimney cap embodying` the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
The cap consists of the cylindrical body portion l0 terminating in a double beveled annular cornice ll which in turn is surmounted by a conical hood l2 preferably having a flat under surface 13 and of a peripheral extent substantially equal to the cornice ll the hood being supported from the body portion l0 by the uprights 14.
Obviously the conical form of the hood serves to deflect rain and wind due to counterdrafts or eddies (as when the cap is located adjacent to a wall extending above the plane thereof) to prevent a direct opposition to an updraft in therchimney and tends by the lateral deflection of such counterdraft to induce a suction in the chimney,
' and hence increase the updraft rather than otherwise.
Similarly lateral drafts or winds striking the peripheral edge of the double beveled cornice are split, the portion coming in contact with the upper deflected surface 1la passing diagonally across the mouth of the chimney in' an upwardly inclined direction while the portion striking the under bevy eled surface 11b is deflected downwardly so beveledv sides ofthe cornice are of substan-y tially equal width and have their free edgesv spaced vertically a distance greater than the width of the sides. It will also be noted that the cap has substantially the saine radial extent as the Vcornice and is disposed above the flue a distance not less than the diameter of the flue. Thus, the plane ofthe upper beveled side of the cornice `intersects the plane of the bottom of the cap at a point without the cross sectional area of the flue. Thus, air currents deflected forwardly by the upper side of the cornice will not beintercepted by the bottom portion of the'hood close enough to the body portion l0 to cause any downward draft in said body portion.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is:
A chimney cap in combination with a cylindrical flue, a double beveled annular cornice disposed in surrounding relation to the flue at the upper edge of the latter, the upper and under beveled sides of the cornice being` substantially equal in width and having theirfree edges vertically spaced a distance greater than the width of said sides, said cornice and cap having substantially the same radial extent, said capbeing disposed above the flue at a distance not less than the diameter of the flue, whereby the plane of the upper bevel ofthe cornice will intersect the plane of the bottom of the cap at a point without the cross-sectional area 0f the flue. f
In testimony whereof. he aflixes his signa.-A
ture.
