.TNITED STATES PATENT DFFIGE.
HENRY KERSTEN, OF WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT m CORPSE-COOLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,649, dated February 17, 1874; application filed January 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY KERsTEN, of lVheelin g, in thecounty of Ohio and in the State of W'est Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gorpse-Preserver and do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My present invention is intended an improvement upon the corpse-preserver for which Letters Patent No. 142,919 were granted to me September 16, 1873 and it consists in co1nbining with the ice-box certain lugs and straps, whereby the ice-box is secured to the coflin and held above the corpse at any desired elevation, or close down on it, as required, and so that the preserver may be held tight upon the coffin when being shipped from one point to another, and prevent the preserver from becoming displaced by jostling in transitu, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a transverse vertical section, of my invention.
A represents the box, made of tin or other suitable metal, and provided with a tight-fitting lid, A. E and F is the concave shape of the bottom of the box, bot-11 cross and length wise, and at the front end the bottom extends farther down than at the rear end. In the front end of the box is made a semicircular ing the box at the sides extend beyond or in front of the main part or center of the box.
This peculiar shape of the box makes it fit the chin and neck of the corpse, and chest downward below the abdomen. On each side of the box are two perforated ears or lugs, G O, to which are attached straps or small girths, D D, that pass over and around the coffin and buckle underneath the coffin, whereby the preserver may be entirely suspended or allowed to bear upon the corpse, as the case may require; also, in case of shipping a corpse by rail or otherwise, the preserver is placed in the coffin,- as before stated, the lid screwed down, and the preserver is secured from misplacement by jostling. a is a spout on the lower or smaller end of the box, for the purpose of attaching suitable hose or pipe to carry off the water accumulated in the box, either through the bottom of the coffin or over the side.
I do not claim the construction of the preserver herein described, irrespective of the lugs O G and straps D D, as such is fully shown and covered by my patent above referred to.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
The combination, with the ice-box A, constructed as described, of the ears or lugs O G v and straps D D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of December, 1873.
- HENRY KERSTEN.
