CONTROLLING DEVICE FOR PHONOGEAPHS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MONTAGUE ADAIR, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Controlling Devices for Phonographs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to phonographs and particularly to a controlling device for disc type phonographs which controls the position of the tone arm on the record and, also, controls the movement of the turntable, and has for an object to provide means for positioning the stylus oi the diaphragm head to suit different sizes of records and in combination therewith to stop the record when the tone arm moves a predetermined distance towards the centre of the record and also to release the brake oi": the turntable when the tone arm is moved to the starting position of the record. These objects are obtained by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. l, is a plan view of a phonograph of i the disc type with my invention in place, I Figs. 2,3 and 4 show the controlling device in difierent operating positions, Fig. 5 is a side elevation corresponding to Fig. 4-, and Fig. 6 shows details of the brake operating mechanism. a
This invention consists of an attachment operated by the movement or the tone arm which operates to apply the brake to the turntable after the record has been played and to release this brake when the tone arm is moved toward the starting position. Also it arrests the movement of the tone arm at predetermined positions on the record corresponding to the starting positions of records of various sizes, it thus enables a record to be started instantly without looking for the starting position for the styius and is particularly useful when records are played under poor light, as it enables the stylus to be placed on the starting position instantly. 1

l Vhen the tone arm is swung across the I marks the extreme position of the tone arm and is adjusted to coincide with the startin position of the largest record. For records of smaller size an intermediate engaging member 35 is provided and arranged to arrest pin 17 at the required position. This member is pivoted at 36 to the base 24 and when in the position shown in Fig. 2e11- gages the stud of pivot 29 so as to arrest pin 17 when in the position shown in Fig. 3. The point of this member is formed on an incline as shown at 38 and pin 17 may, by pressure on the tone arm, be forced over this incline when it is desired to use the stop 32. For this purpose member 35 is longitudinally movable on pivot pin 36 and is held in the engaging position by spring 37 as shown. The force necessary to drive this member back when pin 17 engages it depends upon the tension of spring 37.
When the tone arm moves from the stop 32 towards stop 31 member 35 is deflected as shown in Fig. 4 with practically no resistance to the movement of the tone arm. When the hooked arm 33 is tilted as shown in F ig. 2 the lug 39 engages member 35 bringing it into the straight position again to engage pin 17 on its return movement towards stop 32.
Considerable variation may be made in the construction of this device without departing from the principles of my invention. For instance, the toothed quadrants 26 and 27 may be substituted by a connect ing link pivoted to them and providing the same relative movement as the gears.
Having thus described my invention, I
I claim:
1. In combination, a phonograph including a turntable and a tone arm pivoted to move across the face of said turntable, a member depending from said tone arm, a member secured by the pivot support of said tone arm, said member having a plurality of stops engaged by said depending member to limit the travel of said tone arm.
2. In combination, a phonograph including a turntable and a tone arm pivoted to move across the face of said turntable, a member depending from said tone arm, a device secured to said phonograph having three stops, said depending member engaging said stops and arresting said tone arm at predetermined positions and means for moving said tone arm from one of said positions to another.
3. In combination, a phonograph including a turntable and a tone arm pivoted to move across the face of said turntable, records of various diameters placed on said turntable, a member depending from said tone arm, a device secured to said phono graph engaging said depending member and means included in said device for arresting said tone arm at the beginning of each of said records.

In combination, a phonograph including a revolving turntable supporting a record and a tone arm, said tone arm pivoted to move across the face of said record, a member. depending from said tone arm, a brake for said turntable, a device secured by the pivot support of said tone arm operabl connected to said brake, and means including said depending member for releasing said brake when said tone arm is moved to the starting position of said record.
6. In combination, a phonograph including a revolving turntable and a tone arm, said tone arm pivoted to move across the face of said turntable, a member depending from said tone arm, a brake for said turntable, a device secured to said phonograph operably connected with said brake and having limiting positions for said depending member and means whereby said depending member in one extreme position applies said brake and in the other extreme position releases said brake. In combination, a phonograph including a revolving turntable and a tone arm, said tone arm pivoted to move across the face of said turntable, a member depending from said tone arm, a device secured to said phonograph having a limiting position for said depending member and a spring controlled member arresting said depending member before said limiting position is reached.
9. In combination, a phonograph including a revolving turntable and a tone arm, said tone arm pivoted to move across the face of said turntable, a member depending from said tone arm, a device secured to said phonograph having a spring controlled member for arresting the movement'of said tone arm when moved towards the starting position.
