Description

G. A. OAMPBELL. Derricks and Platforms.
Patented Feb. 17. 1874..
ATTORNEYS.
NITED STATES PATENT ()rrrea CHARLES A. CAMPBELL, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DERRICKS AND PLATFORMS.
Specification forming part of Lettcrs Patent No. 147,600, dated February 17, 1874; application filed January 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs A. CAMP- BELL, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Combined Adjustable Derrick and Platform for Hoisting Coal and other Materials, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved adj ustable derrick and platform, taken on the line 0 c, Fig. 2; and Fig. 2, a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention. is to provide, for the use of dealers in coal, building and other materials, for stevedores for the discharging of vessels, and other purposes, an improved adjustable derrick and platform, by which the materials may be more rapidly hoisted from the boats and other conveyances, or from any other place, and conveyed to the place of deposit, so that the unloading or hoisting of the same is accelerated, and time and expense saved thereby. My invention consists of the combination of a pivoted derrick, fall, or other hoisting-gear, and traveling platform with each other, and with the frame-work for conveying the material. That derrick and platform may be arranged in such position above the boat, car, or other place that the bucket can be dumped immediately after being hoisted into the car, cart, or wheelbarrow. or the material hoisted deposited on the platfornnand the moving of the derrick be avoided. After completing the unloading, the derrick and platform are can ried back toward the main frame to be out of the way.
In the drawing, A represents the main frame-work, of the usual construction, used at coal and other wharvcs, and places for conveying the material to some point of deposit.
, The derrick B is pivoted to shoes (1, applied to the base of frame A, fronting toward the water, track, or other place where the materials are unloaded. The top part of the derrick B is connected by pulley and rope I) to a windlass or pulley-block of frame A at some distance to the rear of derrick B, so that the samemay be let down into inclined position or be drawn back, resting in vertical position against frame A. Derrick B is furthermore.
connected by ropes d with the front part of a movable platform, C, said ropes passing over pulleys d at both sides of derrick B, near its top part, to staples or blocks 0 at both sides of frame. The rear part of platform C may run by means of rollers in top rails of frame A, so that the platform may be easily carried forward and backward simultaneously with the derrick B, projecting at such suitable distance beyond the front part of frame A that bucket 1),or other hoistinggear, which is applied in the usual manner to the top piece of derrick B, is vertically above the place of unloading, and may, on hoisting, be discharged directly into the cart, wheelbarrow, or other receptacle placed at the front part of the platform, or be deposited on the platform.
The bucket or material is hoisted and lowered by steam, horse, or other power, and the swinging back of the same to the cart on the frame and the loss of the time occasioned thereby rendered unnecessary, by the adjustability of derrick and platform over the various parts of the boat, &c., as found most convenient during the unloading of the same.
If the materials are conveyed on a downward incline or chute, the platform may be raised by means of ropes (I, so that it assumes, after being moved forward, an inclined position, and gives thereby directly the requisite start to the car, in which the materials are carried off to the place of storage, or to the material itself.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenting coal and other materials, the combination of a pivoted derrick, fall, or other hoistinggear and movable platform with each other and with the frame, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
CHARLES A. CAMPBELL. Titnesses B10111). W. SARGENT, EDMUND A. GAIEN.
