UNITED STATES A ENT orrica.
FIREPLACE CLOSURE.
Application filed March 12, 1923. Serial No. $24,407.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Bnnrono FRANK Rown, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire.
place 'Closures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable anyone skilled in the art to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in means for closing an ordinary open fire place and more especially relates to means which are permanently hinged to the frame surrounding the fire place whereby the closure means may be moved out of the way to permit the ,use of the fire place and yet at the same time be in position whereby it can he quickly moved into place to close and seal the fire place opening.v
The objects of my invention are to provide suitable means, first, for closing and tightly sealing the fire place opening when the same is not in use. Second, to provide means for ventilating the closure means so that a fire may he started and the fire place opening reclosed, yet suficient ventilation be furnished to get the fire under wayhefore the closure means is thrown open to allow the fire to warm the room. Third, to provide means for swinging the closure means from their position closing the fire place, to one leaving the fire place entirely open and at the same time, keeping the ornamental side oi. the closing means always outward. Fourth, to provide means of permanently attaching the closure means to the fire place frame in all positions.
ll accomplish these objects as will he more fully hereinafter set out in the drawings,
specifications and claims.
lln the drawings to which reference is now made,
Fig.1, is a view of an ordinary fire place showing my closure means installed thereon.
Fig. 2, is a perspective view of a portion of the fire place opening showing the closure means partially open. I
Fig. 3, is a horizontal section through the front of a fire place opening showing the same in section and the closure means in plan. I
Fig. 4., is a vertical section through the fireplace opening and one of the doors.
Fig. 5, is a horizontal section through one of the doors on the line V-V of Fig. i.
Referringnow to the drawings in which the various parts are indicated by the same numerals in all the views, 7 are doors each adapted to cover one-half of a fire place opening. 8 is a tramesurroundin the fire place opening to which frame t e doors may be attached through an intermediate member, preferably in the form of a U shaped arm 5, which is attached by hinges 9 to the said frame 8 and is also pivotally attached to the doors 7 by means of pins 6 which turn in sockets l0 firmly attached to the said doors 7 near their vertical center. The doors 7 are each provided with a knob 11 by which they may he opened or closed and when closed are held in place by a latch a. The outer face of the' door 7' may he ornamented in any desired manner, a plain panelled efiect being shown. The
ack of the door is preferably provided with a fire plate or back 2, which is spaced apart from the face of the door with an air space therebetween to prevent overheating and war ing. The lower portion of the door is pre erahly provided with ventilating openings 12 which may be closed by a shutter which is also provided with openings 13 adapted to register with the openings 12 and provide an air passage therethrough. 3 is a knob by which the plate 2 may be shifted to closethese ventilating openings. it are openings through the fire plate 2 also near the bottom thereoi' which openings provide a passage way for air passing through the openings 12 and 13 and thereby give suitable draft when the doors are closed to permit a fire to get under way hetero the doors are thrown open.
To open the doors, the latch a is pushed to one side and the doors pulled open by means of the hobs ll. As these doors are pulled open, they are turned around the pins 6 at the same time that the arms 5 are swinging on the hinges 9 and are therehy kept with the ornamental face outward and the fire back 2 toward the wall. When fully opened it will be seen that the said doors 7 are adapted to rest flat against the wall on each side of the fire place with the ornamental side outward.
It will also he seen that these doors are permanently attached to the fire place and yet free to open and close.
It will be also seen that the various details are illustrative only and that various alternate details may be substituted for those shown.
It will especially be noted that the term hinges, as used in the claims coversnot only the form of hinge 9, but also other forms such as the pin 6 andsocket 10, and it will further be noted that while the hinge 9 is of such size and location that it brings the inner side of the door against a wall substantially flush with the frame 8, that this hinge can be enlarged or shifted to throw the door further outward should the necessity arise.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is 1. A fire place provided with permanently attached closure means comprising a frame surrounding the said fire place, doors, intermediate members, hinges connecting said members to the sides of the said frame, and hinges connecting the said members to the inner face of the said doors intermediate their width, whereby said doors maybe moved from a position closing said opening to a position against the wall adjacent said fire place, with their faces outward.
2. A fire place provided with permanently attached closure means comprising doors, intermediate members, hinges connecting the said intermediate members to the sides of the fire place and hinges connecting the said members to the inner face of the said doors intermediate their width, whereby said doors may be moved from a position closing said opening to a position against the wall adjacent said fire place, with their faces outward.
3. A fire place provided with permanently attached closure means comprising a frame surrounding the said fire place, doors, having ventilating openings thereto,
shutters therefor intermediate members,
4. A fire "place provided with .permanently attached closure means comprising a frame surrounding the said fire place, doors, a latch to hold said doors closed and intermediate members pivotally attached to the sides of the said frame and to the inner face of the said doors intermediate their width, whereby said doors may be moved from a position closing said opening to a position against the wall adjacent said fire place, with-their faces outward.
5. A fire place provided with permanently attached closure means comprising a frame surrounding the said fire place. doors having an ornamental outer face and an inner fire back, and intermediate members hinged to the sides of the said frame and to the inner face of the said doors intermediate their width, whereby said doors may be moved from a position closing said opening to a position againstthe Wall adjacent said fire place, with their ornamental faces outward.
6. In a fire place closure, a frame adapted to surround the fire place, vU shaped arms, hinges connecting the bottom of the said U to the said frame, doors pivotally attached to the ends of the said arms and adapted when shut to close the said fire place and when open to swing flat against the walls surrounding the said fire place with the face of the said doors outward.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name.
