UNHTED STATES ISIDOR WILLING, OE? MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
COMBINATION DISPLAY STAND.
Application filed August 10, 1921.
T 0 all to hem it may concern Be it known that I, Ismon WILLING, a citizen of the United States, and resident ofldilwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gombination Display Stands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention refers to display stands for merchandise, and it has for its primary object to provide a display stand unit which can be built up to different heights or elevations, whereby when several of the stands are placed in rows, the articles in each row will be visible from the front of a window, or the like, it being understood that the interchangeable display stand primarily consists of a single unit which is added to for height, when assembled, and all stands of. a group will bev similar in design and continuity, but vary only in height.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a base supported column, having a stem projecting therefrom, adapted to receive one or more units in the form of hollow columns, whereby the stand may be progressively built upat different heights with out breaking the continuity of the column, there being a stem projecting through one of the units for the reception of a bust, coat hanger, or hat pad, top or other heads for the display of various kinds of merchandise. y
Heretofore it has been the practice in window display stands to provide a stand of unique and tasteful design for the reception of a head, but when it was desirable to use stands of this general type of differcnt heights, it was necessary to purchase a set of such display stands which are permanently built to a predetermined height.
My invention contemplates supplying a primary base standard which can be built up to the different heights required, whereby -reat economy, elasticity and convenience is liad in dressing a window for display, and, whereby, continuity is maintained in the arrangement, While at the same time, the initial cost in the purchase of a group stand of this character is comparatively small. In other words, the interchangeable or combination display stand problem, as solved by me, will dispense with carrying a large variety of sizes in stands, due to the fact, that Serial No. 491,155.
each base column is purchased with a set offittings, whereby the base column canbe built upon to meet all the demands of an artistic display of mechandise, and irre-- spective of the height of each article displayed, the stand supporting it will, to the eye, appear as an integral structure, pleasing to the eye, it being understood that the auxiliary column units are each held against twisting with relation to the primary structure.
with the above object in view, the invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and-combination of parts as are hereinafter set forth, with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently displayed.
. In the drawings,
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a stand embodying the features of my invention, parts of the stand being broken away and in section to more clearly illustrate details of construction.
Figure 2, a fragmentaryview of the base column or stand, having fittings thereto, column units embodying the features of my invention, whereby the base stand is varied as to height, parts being broken away and in section, to show structural features, and
Figure 3, adetailed sectional plan view of the column-illustrating the squared coupling connection for preventing the auxiliary column units from twisting, the section being indicated by line 3-3 of Figure 2. V i
In the drawing, 1 represents a baseof any desired design, having an integral column 2 extending therefrom. The column terminates with a finished head 2', having extended, therefrom, a rectangular cap 3. Projecting from the cap 3 is a metallic stem 4, which stem is of-sufiicient length to be exposed or project above an auxiliary stem unit 5. The stem unit 5 corresponds in design to the primary stem 2 and it is of tubular form, whereby it can be inserted over the stem d, as shown. The bottom of the auxiliary column is provided with a rectangular recess 3, adapted to fit over the cap 3, whereby the auxiliary column unit is held against rotation or twisting upon the stem 4:. The auxiliary column unit is also provided with a finishing head a and a rectangular cap extension 6.
As best shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, when it is desired to insert a bust A or other type of head upon the primary stand, whereby the elevation of display is upon a low level, the auxiliary column is removed and the bust or other figure is inserted upon the stem 4 and rests close to, or
upon the cap 3 of the integral column 2, and
thus the bust and merchandise thereon, will be displayed, showing a neat column thereunder, complete as to detail.
Should it be desired to place a second column or stand back of this, one of the primary units would be employed and in addition thereto, an auxiliary column .5 would be dropped over the stem and coupled to the primary stem 2, by the cap and recess. This extension would give a predetermined extra height of the primary display stand, and the stem I would project above the cap 6 and the auxiliary column would serve as a support for a bust or other head, whereby goods can be displayed to advantage above the first mentioned stand.
As best shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, when it is desired to obtain a still further elevation for a third stand which might be placed back of the second mentioned stand, I provide a neck column unit 7, which column unit is formed with a circular bore approximately equal in length to the length of the stem 4, it being understood that the base of the neck column is formed with a rectangular recess 6, whereby said neck column can be coupled to the cap 6 of the auxiliary stem to thus produce, in effect, a unitary column of maximum length. The neck column terminates with a rectangular dowel pin 8, which dowel pin is provided for socket engagement with a coat hanger B, or other suitable merchandise display head. It is understood that the coat hanger is formed with a rectangular recess for engagement with the dowel pin, hence, when it is socketed thereto, twisting of the hanger is eliminated.
As indicated in dotted lines, for example, a hat pad C may be substituted for the hanger, or any other suitable form of head may be attached for the convenience in dis plsgring certain types of merchandise.
bvlously by this set oi? auxiliary attachments to the primary column, I may obtain the various desired heights for window display, and it is understood that the auxiliary column sections or neck sections can be multiplied or varied indefinitely, with relation to the primary column.
It will also be observed that in some instances I may attach the neck column directly to the base column by inserting said neck column over the stem 4-, which stem is of a length approximately equal to the bore of the neck column 7.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that a few of the primary stands may be supplied to the merchant, together with the combination fittings, whereby all display requirements can be met with in a simple and convenient manner without the aid of a skilled mechanic, and the display stands, at all times, irrespective 01 their heights, will, to the eye, appear to be unitary structures.
It is understood that I may vary the details of construction, as exemplified within the scope of the appended claim, which will be hereinafter interpreted by those skilled in the art.
I claim: 7
As a new article of manufacture, an ad justable display stand comprising a primary base, a column rigidly supported thereby and having a squared upper end, a rod projecting from the upper end of said column, a removable extension column unitconforming to the design of said first mentioned column and having a. hole therethrough adapted toreceive said. rod with said rod projecting a material distance beyond the upper end of said extension column unit, the lower end of said extension column unit having a squared recess adapted to receive the squared top of said first mentioned column, and having a squared upper portion, and a merchandise display head having a squared recess adapted to cooperate with either of the squared ends of said first mentioned column or said, mentioned extension column and having a hole therethrough adapted to receive and house the projecting rod.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county ol Milwaukee and State of Wis-- consin.
