Be it known that I, BRYAN P. JoYoE, a citizen of the Jnited States, and a resident of Davenport, county of Scott, and State of Iowa, have invented an Improvement in Means for Securing Trunnions to Cradle Forgings, of which the following is a specification.
The invention described herein may be used by the Government, or any of its officers or employees in prosecution of work for the Government, or by any other person in the United States, without payment to me of any royalty thereon, in accordance with the act of March 3, 1883.
The present invention relates to means for securing trunnions to cradle forgings.
The primary object of this invention s the provision of means for securely locking a trunnion to a gun cradle.
A further object is the provision of such means which Will secure the trunnion in position on the cradle against movement in all directions.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel arrangement and combination of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A. practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:

I have shown at 1 a gun cradle having a, side 2 recessed as at 3 to form a seat or socket. Seated in this socket is a trunnion bracket 4 carrying a trunnion 5 by means of which the cradle is mounted for pivotal movement.
The bracket 4 at its lower end is provided with a tongue or projection 6 seated in the base of the socket on the gun cradle and held against lateral movement therein by a tongue or projection 7 formed on the gun cradle.
At the side opposite to the trunnion the bracket is provided with an extension 8 on which is formed a tongue or projection 9 cooperating with a tongue or projection 10 on the gun cradle. Intermediate the extension 8 and the projection 6 on the side opposite the trunnion the bracket is formed with a groove 13. A corresponding groove 14: is formed in the gun cradle in a posit-ion to register with the groove 13. The interlocking projections 6 and 7 and 9 and 10 on the bracket and cradle, respectively, prevent movement of the bracket laterally of the cradle. The projections 15 and 16 formed in the cradle when the cradle is recessed to form the seat or socket for the trunnion bracket prevent movement of the bracket longitudinally of the cradle. To prevent removal of the trunnion bracket from the cradle a key 17- is provided adapted to enter the registering grooves formed in the bracket and cradle, respectively. A set screw 18 in the bracket seats against this key to prevent its removal. The projection 16 is recessed at an appropriate point to ermit insertion and removal of the key. \ecesses 19 are provided on the cradle in order that the projection 10 may be machined so as to properly interfit with the projection 9 on the trunnion bracket.
With a mounting such as described the trunnion may be securely fastened to the cradle in such a manner that its removal is impossible until the set screw 18 is un screwed to release the key. This mounting secures the trunnion on the cradle against movement in any direction. The right hand trunnion bracket mounting only has been illustrated, it is obvious, however, that the same mounting is used in attaching the left hand bracket to the cradle. This mounting, moreover, is capable of use Wherever it is desired to attach a bracket to a support.
I claim:
1. In a securing device for trunnion brackets, a supporting member provided with a socket, a trunnion bracket having a portion seated in said socket, cooperating tongues and grooves on said trunnion bracket and supporting member adapted to interlock to prevent lateral movement of said trunnion bracket with respect to said socket, said trunnion bracket and supporting member provided with registering grooves, a key member slidable in said grooves to lock said trunnion bracket on said supporting member and means securing said key in locked position.
2. In a securing device for trunnion brackets, a supporting member provided with a socket, a trunnion bracket having a portion seated in said socket, cooperating said trunnion bracket with respect to said 15 supporting member, said trunnion bracket and supporting member provided with reg- 1stering grooves and a key member insertable in said grooves to lock said trunnion bracket on said supporting member.
