TRIGGER LOOK FOR GUNS Filed July 21, 1947 INVENTOR. Ere/ck WQQA EE zJ/VD Patented Apr. 11, 1950 NITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE TRIGGER LOCK FOR GUNS Erick W. Lind, Minneapolis, Application July 21, 1947, Serial No. 762,415
2 Claims. I
This invention relates to trigger locks for guns such as, shot guns or rifles. However, if found desirable, the device might also be adapted for use upon small arms such as pistols and revolvers.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and efiicient attachment for removably mounting inside the trigger guard of a gun, with stop elements of the lock disposed back of the triggers and in contact therewith, for preventing the triggers from being pulled backward as is necessary in the firing of the gun, thus preventing a child, or other person through carelessness, from accidentally firing the gun.
Another object of the invention is to provide a slotted lug of metal or other suitable material, the same being adapted to slide upon the trigger guard of the gun immediately back of the trigger of a single trigger gun, or between the triggers of a two trigger gun, with means for releasably securing the lug in place upon the trigger guard, and in the case of a two trigger gun with means extended rearwardly and back of the rear trigger for preventing same moving rearwardly for firing the associated barrel of the gun.
With the stated objects in view, together with such further and additional objects and advantages as may appear from the specification, attention is directed to the accompanying drawing as embodying certain preferred forms of the invention, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the trigger section of a two-trigger gun, showing the trigger and triggers therein, and showing mounted in place within the guard and between the triggers thereof, the form of the invention as designed for locking both triggers to non-firing position.
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective and detail view of the lock assembly as shown in Figure 1, the triggers and guard being broken ofi.
Figure 3 is a plan view on the scale of Figure 2, showing the trigger lock as removed from the gun, and showing the fixed trigger stop or lock for locking the rear trigger of a two-trigger gun, and in full and dotted lines the slidable mounting of the upper trigger stop for locking the forward trigger of the gun.
Figure 4 is a rear end view of the device as shown in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a cross section on the line 5-5 of Figure 3, and showing in dotted lines the lower rib of the trigger guard upon which the device is mounted.
The invention as referred to comprises a lug 5 of metal or other suitable material and preferably rectangular and oblong in form as shown.
This lug is slotted out through its ends and one side, and so that said slot has an upper and a lower side only, in parallel with the upper and lower sides of the lug, as shown at 5a, the said slot being dimensioned to nicely receive and engage the lower rib 6a of the trigger guard 6 of the gun 1. The lug is bored and tapped centrally through its lower lip 5b, as shown at '50 for threadedly receiving and passing a set screw 8, whereby the lug may be removably mounted in place upon the said rib 6a, of the trigger guard between the triggers 9, I0, of the two-trigger gun I, as shown. For use upon such two-trigger gun the lug 5 is formed with a rearwardly extended rear trigger hook or stop 5d which passes immediately back of the rear trigger Ill and prevents the rearward or firing movement of that trigger. The upper side of the lug 5 is chambered or routed out longitudinally as shown, to form a slide-way 5e of uniform depth and parallel margins, the same being thus adapted for slidably receiving the lock-slide II which is longitudinally slotted as at Ha. for freely passing a headed set-screw I2 which is seated in a complementally tapped bore 5 formed centrally and perpendicularly down into the upper side of the lug 5. Thus this lock-slide ll may be pushed forwardly against the forward trigger 9 and locked in position by turning down the set screw I2, for preventing the rearward or firing movement of the trigger 9.
The foregoing description completes the disclosure of the invention as the same is formed and assembled for use upon a two-trigger gun, such as here represented, and it is thought that the explanation as given, the operation and use of the device will be readily understood.
While I have herein shown and described a particular embodiment of the invention and specific structural features thereof, this construction may be changed or varied as desired, within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the kind described for mounting upon the lower rib of the trigger guard of a two-trigger gun, means for locking the triggers against rearward movement for firing the gun, the said means comprising an oblong rectangular lug slotted out through one side and both ends, so that said slot has an upper and a lower side only, extended in parallel with the upper and lower sides of the lug, and whereby it may be mounted on the guard rib inwardly of the guard and between the two triggers, a set screw passed upwardly through the lower lip of the lug as formed by the slot and adapted to bear upon the guard rib as means for securing the lug in place, a stop hook extended rearwardly from the lug and adapted to pass rearwardly of the rear trigger, a longitudinally slotted lock-slide slidably mounted upon the upper side of the lug, and a set screw passed through the slot of the lock-slide down into the lug, whereby the slide may be pushed forwardly against the rear side of the forward trigger and locked in position by means of the set screw.
2. A trigger lock for a gun having a firing trigger oscillatably extended at its under side for firing the gun on its rearward movement, and having a trigger-guard-rib extended over the free end of the trigger, the said lock comprising a rectangular lug slotted out through its ends and one side, and so that said slot has an upper and a. lower side only, in parallel with the upper and lower sides of the lug, and whereby it may be re movably mounted upon the said trigger-guardrib either forwardly or rearwardly of the trigger, by passing the; guard-rib into the said slot. releasable means for securing the slotted lug in position upon the trigger-guard-rib, and means extended rearwardly from the lug, when same is mounted forwardly of the trigger, for lockingly engaging the trigger to prevent its rearward movement for firing the gun.
