IMPROVEMENT IN DRAWING OR WRITING TABLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,504, dated February 17, 1874; application filed June 28, 1873.

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, .Tor-IN ADAMs KNIGHT, of Auburn, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification:

The object of the said invention is to produce, as an article of furniture, a table having a series of drawers containing various acces- `sories, by which its usefulness will be largely increased. A drawer on the front, for instance, is iitted with supplementary slides, so that it may be drawn its entire length, or more, from the table, and be supported by the slides, although its depth nearly equals the width of the table. This drawer has a lid hinged to its front, so that when the drawer is fully drawn out and the lid raised, it may be again thrust in to rest the lid upon the table to present it as an inclined surface for use as a desk. The desk surface may be propped up into a position approaching the vertical, and with the drawer extended, by a hinged prop resting within the space under the lid, and its eniployment as an easel for a large picture may be extended by elevating a portion of its frame, that is hinged for the purpose. The end drawers are fitted in the same plane and directly below the front drawer, and each in depth one-half the length of the table, and yet both are capable of 'extension beyond the table by means of slides that run in different planes. One of the end drawers is fitted with an inner drawer, sliding from the side toward the front, and extending within the reach of a person seated at the desk or easel. The other end drawer is tted with a tray that works on pivoted arms, that permit of its eX- tension in a similar manner to the front drawer.

To enable others skilled in the arts to which it appertains to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation with reference to the drawing, which represents a table made with the said improvements.

The drawer a has a supplementary slide, b, on each side, that admits of its heilig drawn out its full length, although it extends the width oi the table. The desk-cover c is hinged at the front of the drawer that its inclination may be altered to any required degree, either by resting on the edge of the table or on the prop d. The upper part ofthe frame of the lid may be hinged, as at c, to support a large picture, as an easel. The end drawer f has a drawer, g, working on extension-slides from its side; and the end drawer h has a shallow tray, i, carried on the arms k, that are pivoted at the end within the drawer, so that as the arms are swung over and into the drawer, the tray may also be placed within it by the sliding of pins on each side of the tray in the grooves or slots of the arms. By these pins and slots the tray is also held steadily when extended. rl`he end drawers f and h are opposite and in the same plane 5 but by arranging the slides of f, as at Z, on the lower parts of the slides of the drawer, and that of h on the upper part, as at m., both drawers may work on extension-slides without interference with one another.

For convenience or" packing, I make the legs of the table in sections, which may be unserewed or otherwise detached, as indicated by the dotted lines at az.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-l As an article of furniture, a table provided with a drawer, a, slides b, cover c, props d, hinged parts e, drawer f, inner drawer g, slides l, drawer h, tray z', arms k, and slides m, all arranged, constructed, and operating substantially as shown and'described.
