To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Monnis OZLEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide improved means which will frictionally secure a post within a hollow standard. so that the post will be adjustably mounted and can be moved lengthwise with respect to the standard.
Another object is to make my invention in such manner that it can be quickly and cheaply constructed. and will be durable in use.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an elevation showing my in vention as appliedto a post for use in a hollow standard,
Figure 2 is a side view of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an elevation showing a lamp structure including a post and adjustable securing means made in accordance with my invention as shown in Figures land 2.

Referring to the drawings and particularly to Figures 1 to 11 inclusive, 13 represents a hollow standard having a bore 14 in which is adapted to slide a rod or post 15; said post in the present instance serving to support a lamp 16 so that by moving the post 15 upwardly and downwardly the position of the lamp will be varied.

versely therethrough; the opposite sides of the post being cut away to provide fiat surfaces 18 which are oppositely disposed; said surfaces tapering upwardly and terminating in two shoulders 19 and 20. Two passages 21- and 22 lead respectively from the shoulders 19 and 20 and extend at a slant. These passages are preferably drilled so that they will not intersect each other; the drilling occurring slightly off center. A flat strip spring 23 has its opposite ends 24 and 25 tapered as clearly shown in Figure 6. This spring is bowed slightly within its length as shown in Figure 8 and the end 24 is insorted into the lower part of the passage 21 while the end 25 is projected through the transverse hole 17. From this position the parts are moved into the position shown in Figure 9 so that the end 25 is entirely projected through the hole 17 and the end 24 is projected further into the passage 21. After the spring has been moved into'the position shown in Figure 9, the end 25 is bent into the position shown in Figure 10 and'projected'upwardly into the passage 22; thus completing the inserting movement of the spring as shown in Figure 11.
When in this position the wide portion of the spring 28 will be within the hole 17 while the ends 24 and 25 are positioned within the passages 21 and 22. The spring thus inserted will be locked. in position with bowed portions 26 projecting outwardly; the distance between these bowed portions normally being greater than the diameter of the bore 14 andto insert the postwithin the bore 14, it is necessary to slightly compress the parts 26 of thespring, after which these parts 26 will spring outwardly intofriction a1 engagement with the inner wall of the bore 14 and the post is thus adjustably sup ported within the standard. It will be noted that when the post is raised, it will be impossible for the spring to become detached since the wide portion of the spring is within the hole 17 and therefore the spring cannot move lengthwise relatively to the post to such extent as to withdraw the ends 24 and 25 out of the passages 21 and 22.
In actual practice it has been found that the spring can be inserted or removed in a few seconds and it requires no screws or other parts in order to secure the spring in operative position. The ends 24 and 25 of the spring 23 will move freely within the passages 21 and 22 due to any variation have chance to move toward each other and,
at the same time the end portions though free to move will be securely locked against accidental outward movement.
In Figure 12, I have illustrated a slight modification in the form of the spring wherein one end of the spring projects out of the passage 21 and bears against the inner wall of the bore 14; the hollow standard having a groove 14: which extends in the form of a recess in the standard 13; the projecting end of the spring when the post is raised to its fullest extent being adapted to springinto the groove lt and thereby prevent the post from being accidentally pulled entirely out of the standard; it being noted that when the post is pushed downward that the inner wall of the bore wih and the spring will serve to hold the post,
and the part 27 in any desired position. In all other respects the construction is similar to that above described in connection with Figures 1 to 11 inclusive and I have therefore given corresponding parts similar reference numerals.
While I have described my'invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth,
but consider that I am at liberty to make.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character describedincluding a hollow member; a post slidable within said member, said post having a hole extending therethrough; and a looped spring having a portion between its ends p-assedloosely through said hole, said ends of the spring extending into passages within said post; substantially as described. 7

A device of the character described including a hollow member; a post slidable within said member, said post having a transversely extending hole, shoulders above said hole and passages leading from said shoulders; and a bowed spring having a portion between its ends fitting within said hole, said ends extending into said passages; substantially as described.
3. A device of the character described including a hollow member; a post slidable within said member, said post having a transversely extending hole, shoulders above said hole and passages leading from said shoulders; and a bowed spring having a portion between its ends fitting within said hole, said ends extending into said passages, said post between said hole and said shoulders being cut away to provide a tapered portion; substantially as described.
