Applicationfiled November '12, 1921. Serial ,No. 514,451, f v
To all whom it may concern: Be, it known that I, Anronro VISITACION,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the, county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination'Check Pen Protectors, of which the I periphery of the Wheel toreceive' the pri t 'lng plates 60 when said plates {are'pas'sed 65 following is a specification.
One of the objects of this invention is .to provide a fountain penhaving a check protecting device enclosed within a cap engageable with the penbody.
This and other objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown inthe accompanying drawing, forming a '-material part of this disclosure, and* in-Which Figure 1 is a partial sectional view show mg a. pen constructed inaccordancewith the 1 nvention.
Figure 2 is a generalview of the pen' showing one'of-the ink filling levers and the pen shifting means. Figure 3 is a partially sectional end view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a similar sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a sectional plan- View of the printing wheel taken on line 55 of Figure Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral 10 designates in general the cylindrical barrel of the holder. A tapered element 11 is frictionally engaged with the lower end of the barrel and a removable cap 12 is frictionally engaged; on the upper, slightly tapered outer surface of the barrel.
Interiorly of the cap 12, near its upper end, is arranged a check protecting device comprising a wheel carrying shaft 50, having a knurled operating head 51. The opposite end of the shaft is concentrically recessed to receive the end 52 of an eccentric 54, having a stem 53 'in'alinement with'the part 52.
A retaining disc 55 is secured to'the shaft 50, together with a collar 56, on the periphery of which are formed, parallel to theaxis of the collar, ten dove tailslots 56, j
best shown inF i re 5.
Another disc 57 free torotate on the shaft, is provided with a single slot 58 sli htly wider than the slots 56'.
lidably secured in the slots 56 are plates 60 having raised figures engraved on their convex surfaces.
Adjacent the outersurfaceof'the disc :57
is a webbed wheel 62 arrangedto rotate on the eccentric 5 1 of the stem '53, -the '*wheel havin a g pro ecting concentricring"'64 formedintegralwith-its we,
A series of six transverse undercut slots, duplicates of the slots 56', are formed-in the through "the slot-58. ofthe disc 57.
Below the undercutslots: of the =wheel- 62,
are arcuately curved plates 4 :66," the convex sides of which areknui'ledietoimpressper forationswherrrolled along thesurface of-a check. -On that. porti0n of the peripheraledge of thewheel 62, not provided with slots, is a similar-knurledsection and .a 'single gure I wardly the knurled plates 66.
F rom-Figures 3-a1rd 4 it will'be seenthat- The wheel 62, carrying the sign, is .85
rotated into front or printing position, and i the disc 57 is rotated until the slot 58 is in line'with one of the knurled plates 66. The
collar, carrying-the printing plates 60, is
turned by the knurled knob 51 until the first desired number is in line with the slot 58 of the disc 57 ,and the knurled plate 60 is then depressed against the tension of the spring 68, presenting an alined' slot through which the proper printing plate may be i moved into operative position with relation to, the $5 sign. This operation is repeated until all the numbers necessary to print the amount of thecheck are arranged in print-f ing position. To provide. against any of the unused characters being imprinted on the check, the r wheel62 is caused to'be elevated above the general surface of the unused characters, by
holding the stem 53 ofv the eccentric- 54:; and 1 rotatingthe wheel 62" relative thereto a this purpose.
small handle .7 being fixed to the stem for An implement for assisting in movingthe plates is provided and is shown housed in the pencil element'38 by the numeral 72 of Figure 1. In this figure is: also shown; an
fixed lcharacter as the -EB si'gn, shown in -Fi Engaged about the hub-of the wheel-'62 is 5 a spring having -a-pluralit y of extending elements {68, engaging and pressing outinking pad 73, held against a ring element 74 by the action of a spring 75, the lower ends of Which engage lugs 76 formed With c the cap.
Asemi-spherical cover 80, hinged to the cap 12 as at 80, provides means for closing the cap and preventing dust from clogging the printing mechanism. v
While certain preferred embodiments of this device have been shown and described, it Will be apparent that minor changes in the form, arrangements, proportions, sizes and details may be made Without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent, is
1. A check protector comprising a cylindrical type magazine havingtype receiving and retaining grooves in its periphery, a printing Wheel associated there- With, and means to move the Wheel into concentric or eccentric relation to the magazine.
2. A check protector comprising a cylindrical type magazine having type receiving and retaining grooves in its periphery, a printing Wheel associated with the magazine and an eccentric associated with the Wheel to move the same into concentric, and eccentric relation to the magazine.
3. A check protector comprising a cylindrical type magazine having type reperiphery,
ceiving and retaining grooves in its a printing Wheel at one end of the magazine, a spacing disk between the magazine'and Wheel, the printing Wheel having peripheral grooves to receive type from the magazine, and an eccentric bearing for the Wheel mounted concentrically With the magazine whereby the Wheel. may be made to rotate eccentrically or concentrically with relation to the magazine.
4. In a check protecting device adapted to be engaged with a Writing implement, said device comprising a casing, a sectional sha'lt passing diametrically through said casing, a collar having transverse slots formed on its periphery fixed to one section ;of said shaft, type plates slidable in the slots, a printing Wheel rotatable on the other section of said shaft, said Wheel having transverse slots formed partially around its peripheral face, paper piercing means formed on the remaining periphery of said Wheel, said slots providing means for transversely sliding said type plates from the collar to. the printing Wheel, paper piercing plates contacting With said Wheel, spring arms acting against said plates, means for elevating the printing Wheel when the type plates are in printing position, casing.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this application.
