To all whom t may con-oem: v f Be it known thatl, SAM KARPAL, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Holmesmoved upwardly and struck upon opposite,
faces thereof by cuttingA members for forining the file teeth thereon.
\ Another object of the invention is to provide a novel type of support for thelower end of the file blank, the support being associated with a worm shaft to be moved upwardly thereby, means being associated with f said support for frictionally holding the same into engagement with the worm shaft and capable of operation to permit this association between the support and Vworm shaft andvto permit manual vertical shifting of said support.
A still further object of the invention is to provide laterally adjustable supporting.
frames for the file cutters, said le cutters being resiliently mounted in their support and capable of adjustment for varying the tension thereon and alsoV the striking force thereof.
With the above and other objects in view, Y the invention consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the ac- Y companyiug drawings and claimed.

Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line III-III lof Fig. 1 with the base frame omitted,
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on lineI'VfIV ofFig. 1 showing the file support and 'the' wind shaft for elevating the same, i
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view taken on line V--V of Fig." 1 showing the striker arm on the cross shaft for retracting the tile cut-` ter against the ,spring tension thereon and the adjustable mounting for the lfile cutter Y' support.
Figure 6 is a detail sectional .view of a portion of the windshaft and le support, and
Figure 7 is a detail sectionalfview taken on. line VII-VIIof F ig.`6.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated Va file cutting machine embodying a frame havingI a base supporting stand 1, preferably of rectangular formationV in 'plan view as illustrated in F ig.v 1, thetile cutting and other mechanism being supported upon the base 1.
A framestructure mounted on the base supportl embodies perpendicular end bars 2` and spaced intermediate perpendicular bars 3 and 4, the bar 4 being .verticallyr slotted 4as shown kin Fig. 4 withvrack teeth4a provided on the opposite vertical walls of said slot.l `A;
the` adjacent end-barsQ as cleai'ly shown in` Fig. 1. v
The. iile, support and mechanism for elevating the same embodies a horizontal power shaftl 7 journaled through one of the end bars 2 as at -8, and further jo'urnaledV in 1 standards 9 and`10, has a'loose pulley- 11 and a fixed pulley 12 associatedtherewith. A
14 between the perpendicular .barsQ and 3 has a worm portionk 15 disposed between the ing a fixed 'pinion 16 thatfmeshes with a y10o Y perpendicular shaft 13 journaled in bearings 5 pinion 17 upon the adjacent end of ther power shaft 7. .The support for the file blank F embodies a block 18 having a socket 18a at the upper side -thereof for supporting the lower end of the file F, the supporting block 18 being positioned between the intermediate perpendicular Lbars 3 and 4 and being formed integral with the rectangular frame 19 that inclosesthe bar 3. As shown more clearly in Figs. 1, 6 and 7 an arm 2O carried by the rectangular frame 19 and eX- tending laterally thereof has a head 21 swiveled thereto as at 22, the head carrying a projecting pin 23y that extends into the grooves of the spiral gear 15. The support for the opposite end of the block 18 embodies a relatively short cylinder 24 that rotatably receives the projecting pin 25 from the file supporting block 18, the cylinder 24 being provided with peripheral gear teeth 26 that mesh with the rack teeth 4a upon one wall of the slot formed in the perpendicular bar 4. It will therefore be seen that upon rotation ofthe power shaft 7, the wornr 15 is rotated and the connections above described between said worm and the file supporting block 18 will effect a vertically shifting movement of said block with the [ile F supported therein.
In order to maintain operative connections between the pins 23 carried by the frame arm 20 and the worm 15, a perpendicular arm 27 having angularly bent ends 28 positioned between spaced guide ianges 29 carried by the cross brace 5 and the armi section 6 at that side of the machine vframe opposite the worm 15. A coil spring 3() is interposed bet-Ween each end ofthe arm 27 and the bar 4V as shown in Fig. 1 that tend to move the arm 27 laterally of the machine frame forl disengagement with the adjacent end of the cylinder 24 associated with the file supporting block 18. A shaftr31 swiv-` eled at one end in the arm 32 is threaded through a bearing 33 carried by the perpendicular end bar 2 and provided upon the outer end thereof with a hand wheel 34, axial inward movement of the shaft 31 moving the arm 27 against the tension of the springs 30 for frictionally engaging the cylinder 24 to shift the'fle supporting block and arm 20 to move the pin 23 into en-M gagement with the groove in the worm 15.
A lever rod 35 extends through the rectangular frame 19 of the file supporting mechanism and is pivoted at its lower end as at 36 to the cross brace 5, the upper end there-r of being engaged by the spring 37 that cooperates with Vthe lug 38 carried by the adjacent arm section 6 that normally tends to move the upper end of the lever rod 35 away from the intermediate bar 3 for engagement with the rectangular frame 19 as shown in Fig. 4 for laterally shifting the file supporting block 18 to disengage the supporting block from theworm 15.
A frame structure is disposed above the hle blank elevating mechanism and embodies a cross head 39 carried by the upper end of each` perpendicular end bar 2, the
The operating mechanism for the cutter blades 51 embodies four perpendicularly eX- tending rods 62 su ported upon the base stand 1 with a cross siaft 63 journaled in the upper ends thereof above the bladefguides 49 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A finger 64 lis carried by each shaft 63 and upon rotation of said shaft is adapted to be moved into engagei'nent with the cutter blade lug 57 for retracting the cutter blade'against Y the tension of the spring 58. ,One lofthe shafts 63 is provided with an end pulley 65 e source* of po-wer while the shafts 63V areconnected vby a cross belt 67 passing overpulleys 68.
driven by a belt 66 from a suitab From the abovek detail description4 of the device, it isbelieved that'the construction and operationv thereof will at once be apparent, it being understood that when the supporting block 18 is in its loweredV position,-
a file blank S is mounted therein as illustrated in Fig. 1. By ro-tating the shaft 31 by the hand wheel 34, the arm 27 is' moved into friction engagement with the cylinder 24 of the block mechanism, against the tension of the springs 30 for operatively connecting the block 18 to the worm 15 as shown in Figs. l, 6 and 7. The file cutter guides 49 are transversely shiftable upon the screw shaft 4l for properly positioning the same relative to the upper end of the file F. Power applied to the shaft 7 will rotate the worm 15 and thereby elevate the block 18V supporting the file blank.4 Power applied to the pulley 65 will rotate the shaft 63 and cause the fingers 64 carried thereby to engage the cutter blade lugs 57 to retract the same against the tension of the springs 58 and when said fingers escape the lugs, the springs 58 forcibly return the cutting edges of said blade into engagement with the upper end of the file blank, it being understood lthat the blades 51 may be` angularly disposed as indicated in Fig. 2 for cutting the proper form of tooth upon the file blade. The tension of the spring 59 is regulated by the screw plugs 61 for controlling the striking force of the cutter blades relative to the file blank. The power devices for the shaft 7 and the shaft 63 are so timed as to permit a continuous cutting operation upon the file blank with each tooth of the file-blank even- Vly spaced. In removing the completed file from the machine, and when the file supporting block 18 is in its limit of upwardl movement, the shaft 31V is reversely rotated to permit the springs 30 to displace the arm 27 from fric-tional engagement with the adjacent end ofthe block cylinder 24, at which time the tensioned arm 35 engaging the rectangular frame 19 of the block supporting mechanism will shift said frame and block to disconnect the same from the Vworm 15, the block 18 then being lowered while the' cylinder 24 revolves upon the end 25 of said block in passing over the rack teeth 4a on the frame bar 4.
