To @ZZ w hom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE S. JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evanston, in the County of Cook `and State of Illinois, have invented new and usefulImprovements in Goggles, ot which the following is a full, Clear, concise, and exact.' description, reference being had to the accom'- panying drawing. forming a part of this specification. f Y
My invention relates to goggles. One of the Objects Ot my invention is. toA provide improved means for securing the nose-piece or bridge to the eye-piece.
A further Obj ect Ot my invention is to provide improved means torconnectingthe two eye-pieces together; afurther object of my inventionlis to provide an improved goggle construction in which the bridge is provided with a securing-portion held against a Shoulder inside the Cylindrical eye-piece or shield. i
A further object of my invention provides an improved construction in which the lensv and bridge-piece are held in place on the eyepiece by means of a ring fitted on the outside ot the eye-piece. l,
A further object ott my invention is to provide an improved goggle construction which will be durable and eiiicient in use, and easy to manufacture and assemble.
Further objects will appear from the detail-ed description which follows and fro the appended claims. In thedrawings in which I haveushown two embodiments Vot my invention,
Fig. 1 is a top plan view Ot theigoggles;
Fig. Q is'a front view thereof; j y
' Fig. 3 is a perspective view ofthe eyepiece; i
Fig. 4 is a perspective view oi the bridge or nose-piece; Y
Fig. 5 is an axial sectional view through one of the eye-pieces, showing the nose-piece andlens in position:
Fig. 6 is a section On the line 6 6 ot Fig. 5;'
Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing a Slight change in the construction ofthe eyeFV piece.
Referring now to the drawings 1n detail. and first of Figs. 1-6 inclusive, the goggle shown therein comprises a pair Ot cylindrical eye-pieces or shields 10, a pair of nosepieces 11, connected together by a strap or .link 12 to form ai bridge connecting the eyepieces, a pair of lenses 13, mounted on the eye-pieces 10 respectively, anda pair oi' fier-l rules or rings 14, for securing the lenses 18 and nose-pieces 11 to theeye-pieces 10.
The nose-piece 11 comprises a nose-engaging portion 15, and a'ring-portion 16, positioned inside the 'tubulareye-piece- 10, and seated on a shoulder 17. The edge of the eye-piece 10, is cut away as indicatedy at`18, tol p-rovide clearance V4for the nose-piece 11. and to properly position this nosefpiece with respect to the eye-piece. A metal `ferrule 19 is secured to the outside oi the' eye-piece 10, this :t'errule being threaded `for engagement 14 previously referred to.
Any suitable material may be used for i'he various parts, suchas fibre for the eyepiece 10 and nose-piece 11,.a.nd brass for the ferrule 19 and lsecuring-rins 14. Suitable straps 20 are provided tor. securing the goggles on the head of the. wearer. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5j, the nose-engaging portion'l of the nose-piece may be somewhat thicker than the ring-portion 16, to afford a broad edgeA atthe part which'rests on the nose.
In assembling the goggles, the nosep'ie-ce 11 is placed with they ring-portiOn-lG resting on the vshoulder 17 ofthe eye-piece, the lenses 13 are placed inposition, suitable cushion-4 ing washers 21'. being` provided if necessary or desired,v and the retaining' ring 14 .is then placed in position ands'crewed onto the fer-q rule 19, to clamp the lens 13 and the ringl'G ot the nose-piece Vin position with respect to the eye-piece 10, x
' The two nose-pieces 11are then connected together' by' means of the strap'12, the two iiose-pieces togethei'ltorming a bridge vtor the nose. Y 1.
It l.will be seen, as indicated abovc, thatthe notch at 18 not onlyT serves to provide a 4pass-r age` for the poraion of the nose-piece. cone necting thenose-engaging portion and ring.
Aco i vwith the internally threaded securing-ring holding While l have shown the securing-ring as screwed onto the erru-le 19, instead of being screwed V'onto the ri11g',it may be clamped thereon or otherwise fitted to stay in place on the ring.
VIt will be seen that l have thus provided a simple and enicient means for 'securing the nose-piece in position with respect to the eye-piece, which will be inexpensive, durable and ei'licient.
While I have shown but two forms oi' my invention, it is obvious that it may be embodied in other forms covered and defined by the appended claims.
