Description
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE. i
g JOHN r. sEiBEHLINe, or AKRON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PITMEN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,436, dated February 10, 1874-; application filed January 27, 1874.
To all -whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. SnrBnnLrNG, of Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pitmen, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a View in perspective of my improved pitman, part of the rod being broken away; and Fig. 2 a sectional View of the pitman-head.
The object of my invention is to so construct the crank-pin box of the pitman-head that it may be adjusted to compensate wear, so a-s always to it snugly; and my improvement consists in combining a pitman-rod having a screw out thereon, a yoke or slotted holder with a female screw therein, anda transverselyslotted spring-head or cut ring bearing against the yoke, and adjusted therein by means of the screw-threaded rod.
The crank-pin box of the pitman-head is peculiarly constructed. The upper end of the pitman-rod A carries a transversely-slotted spring-head, B, which ts on the crank-pin. A male screw, G, on the` pitmanrod passes through a corresponding female screw on a stirrup or yoke, D, whichA incloses the spring head B. This spring-head fits on' the end of the pitman-rod.
Now, by screwing up the pitman-rod, the spring-head will-be jammed against the yoke, and thus be compressed on the crank-pin, and compensate :its Wear.
Jam-nuts E E hold the pitman and springhead in place when screwed up.
In a fullsized pitman, the spring head readily plays enough to accommodate this adjustment.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the pitman, the yoke, and the slotted spring-head, all constructed and operatin g substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
JOHN F. SEIBERLING.
