QFFlQEO FERDINAND STRAUSS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FASTENING DEVICE.
Application filed. November To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND STRAUSS, a, citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fastening devices and in particular to one which embodies the use of a piece of twine which is wrapped and held about a gripping memher. A particular object of the invention is to provide a fastening device which will eliminate waste of twine and time, in doing up boxes especially of the card board type, which in some industries are tied up and untied a number of times before reaching the consumer.
A further object is to provide a fastening device which may be combined with the boxes at manufacture, or which may be'sold separately and applied to the boxes as needed. A. further object is to provide a fastening device which, being resilient, will yieldably hold a piece of twine wrapped therearound without danger of its unwrapping accidentally.
Referring to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention,-
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a box to which is attached my fastening device;
Fig. 2 is a section taken through a portion of the box and through the fastening device; and
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of a modified form of fastener, provided with slits which tend to increase the resiliency thereof and give the same an increased gripping power.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 denotes a box having a cover 6. both of which may be made of cardboard or other fibrous material. On one end of the box and adjacent the lower edge of the cover preferably, there is laced the metallic fastening member whic consists of a base 7 which is convex in shape and is provided with the diametrically opposite prongs 8 4, 1922. Serial No. 598,971.
which are forced through the box material and are bent to hold the fastener in place. The prongs may be of malleable metal while the fastener itself is of a resilient spring like metal.
An opening 8 is provided in the base 7 through which passes a piece oftwine, the end of which inside the base is knotted to prevent its pulling out of said base. The twine passes over the cover and around heneath the box and up to the head 9 of the fastener which is convexo-convex shaped. and the inner side of which is held firmly against the base 7 at its center by an eyelet or pin 10, the ends of which are suitably expanded to provide holding heads.
The twine is then wrapped around between the base 7 and the head 9 and wedges itself therebetween, and is held from un winding by the resiliency of said base and head.
In the modification, I have provided a plurality of radial slots 10 in the base 7 and inner side of the head 9. These slots allow of a greater give to both members whereby a twine of greater thickness ma be securely held in place.
It is to be noted that these fasteners may be sold as part of the box or may come separately so that any length of piece of twine may be fastened to the base 7 and the fastener inserted into the box.
What I desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:-
1. A fastening device comprising a substantially convex base member, projections on said member for fastening the same to a receptacle, a convexo-convex head portion fixed to said base member, and a cord, one end of which is attached to said base and the other end of which, after being passed around said receptacle, is adapted to be held between the opposing faces of the head and base members.
2. A'fastening device comprising a substantially convex base member, malleable pron s formed integrally with said base member and adapted for holding the device to a receptacle, a convexo-convex head por tion, an eyelet joining said head and base member so that their opposite convex faces are 1n contact at the centers of sald membars, a cord, one end of Wlnch 1s fixed 1n said base member and the other end of which after being passed around the receptacle, isadapted to be held between the 0pposing convex faces of the head and base FERDINAND STRAUSS.
