ROVAIBLE BEAM BOTTOM FO HANGER AND SPACER.
Application ledl October 2, 1922. Serial No. 591,614.
To all ttolto/m t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILBUR R. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Franklin rIownship, in the county of Owen and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Removable Beam Bottom Form Hangers and Spacers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to the covering of metallic structural beams by molding concrete or other plastic protecting material thereon, .and 'the invention has reference more particularly to a hanger and spacer whereby to properly support a form bottom on the beam while molding the concrete.
An object of the invention is to provide a hanger which shall be so constructed as to hang a molding form bottom on a metallic ermit the hanger to be readily removed or future use after concrete molded on the form bottom .has become set. Another object is to provide a hanger and spacer of such construction as to be capable of being removably supported by a metallic beam and to support a bottom form on which side forms may be supported' and spaced a proper distance away from the beam.
A further object is to provide a removable beam bottom form hanger and spacer which shall be so constructed as to be adapted to be quickly arranged for use and be a means for facilitating the work when covering a metallic beam with concrete or cement whilethe beam is in its place in a-building structure, which hanger and spacer shall be reliable, durable and economical in use.
With the above-mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in a novel hanger rod having a novel head to be removabl supported on a wing or Hangs oit a beam, t e rod being provided with means to support 'a bottom formand the head hawing a side guide against which to set a side mold .form the required distance from the beam; and, the invention consists also further in the parts and combinations and ar rangements of parts as hereinafter particularly described and further set forth in the accompanying claims.
Referring to the drawings, -Figure 1 is 'a rentary perspective view, of a mold form supported on a beam by the new hanger and spacer, and concrete molded on to the beam, to clearly illustrate and explain the particular purpose of the invention; Fi 2 1s a top plan oi the hanger and spacer; ig.
3 is a side view ofthe hanger and spacer; Y
Fig. 4f is a front View of the hanger and Spacer; and, F1g. 5 is a transverse section, partlally broken away, of the structural I-beam and mold forms supported thereon ually used in the construction of the building being of I section having a web or vertical plate-1, lateral lower wings or anges 2 and 3 and upper wings or flanges i and 5. In the operation of covering the beam a bottom portion form 6 provided with re-enforcing cleats 7 is supported at such distance as may be desired below the beam, and side forms 8 and 9 are set uponthe bottom form at such distance as may be desired from the sides of the beam, enabling workmen to rapidly apply concrete'l() beneath the beam, side covering concrete 11 and 12 on opposite sides of the beam and top covering concrete 13 upon the top of the beam, the concrete being monolithic.
For the purpose'of the present invention the bottom form 6 has bolt-holes 14 and 15 suitably spaced apart, these preferably extending to the cleats in which continuing holes 16 and 17 are bored to receive portions of the hanger and spacers.
Each hanger and spacer is composed of suitable metal and comprises a rod portion 18 designed to fit closely in a hole 1d or 15, the rod portion having a novel head thereon which extends from one side of the rod portion and is tapered generally to permit -it to be readily withdrawn from the cement or concrete, the head having an under portion 19 of suitable length and havin an end or shoulder 20 designed to set against the edge of a lower wing or Harige of the beam, the face of the portion 19 extending from the rod portion at an obtuse angle relatively thereto, the proportion being such that the rod portion 18 extends vertically through the bottom form when the shoulder 20 is in contact with the wing of the beam. The head has a nose 21 that projects lbeyond the shoulder' 20 and has a bottom face portion 22 designed to be supported upon the wing or llange of the beam. The head has a rear spacing portion 23 that is thicker than the rod portion 18 and extends partially along the rod portion and it-has a straight guide face 24 that is parallel relatively to the rod portion, and its lower end constitutes a shoulder 25 against which the bottom form is secured so as to space the bottom form the required distance below the beam. The head has an inclined or beveled top 26 that recedes from the guide' face 24 towards the nose portion 21 which has a convexly curved top and end portion. The head has also straight sides 27 and 28 that are convergent from the guide edge 24 to the nose portion, insuring easy withdrawal from the concrete.
The rod portion 18 of the hanger and spacer is provided with suitable means whereby to directly support the form bottom, the rod portion preferably having screw threads 29 extending from its end with which a nut 30 is connected, and if desired the rod portion may also have a slot 31 therein in which a key 32 is inserted below the nut, and it will be understood that either the nut or the key in some cases be dispensed with.
In practical use a' suitable number of the hanger and spacers are placed in the holes prepared for them in the bottom form and the heads are hung on the wings 2 and 3 in the manner described, the bottom form being brought up to the shoulders 25, after which the side forms .8 and 9 are placed upon the bottom form and against the guide faces 24, the side forms being suitably sev cured in place as customary and may assist in maintaining the shoulder 20 against the wings or flanges of the beam, the side forms thus being spaced the required distance 'apart from the beam. The forms having been properl set, the cement or concrete is poured v'nto t e mold form and fills the space below the beam, the major portions of the hanger and spacers becoming embedded in the concrete. After the concrete or other plastic material that may have been utilized has become properly set the side forms are removed, after which the bottom form is released and lowered away from the hanger devices, and the latter may be lightly tapped by any suitable instrument and will readily become loosened from the concrete from which they may be' taken and kept for future use. r
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
