l-l. HEIDLAND DRAWER PULL Filed Sept. 21. 1922 Patented Nov. i3, i923.
HERMAN HEIDLAND, OF ST. LOUS, MISSOURI.
Application filed September 21, 1922.
To all iti/wm t may concern:
DR-AWER PULL.
lie it known that I, HERMAN lniniiiiND, a citizen et the United States, and residing at St. Louis, lvifissouri, have invented the new and useful improvement iii Drawer Pulls, ot which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates the like.
o drawer pulls and The pulls ordinarily applied to drawers, cabinet doors and the like are ot the type which tasten to the iront oi' the drawer or door and project therefrom so as to provide a handle to be grasped in opening the drawer or door.
On some kinds of furniture,
these projections are liable to be struck by other furniture or obgects being moved past the front of the diawer or cabinet and are, therefore, subject to injury or to be broken oiF entirely so as to render it impossible to open the drawer.
One of the objects of this inventioii, there tore, is to provide a drawer pull which shall present no projections from the iront of the drawer.
Another object ot this invention is to provide such a device which sliali improve tlie appearance oi the furniture by presenting a smooth and unbroken iront surface.
Further objects will appear from the detail description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a sectional view oi a drawer equipped with a pull embodying this in` vention Figure 2 is a similar view showing another embodiment of this invention; and
Figure 3 is a detail of the spring hinge tor mounting the shutter.
Reierringto the accompanying drawing, i designates the side, 2 the bottom, 3 the back and i the front of an ordinary drawer. The tir-ont 4f may. oi course, be part of a cabinet door or other similar device.
accordance with this invention, a section is cut out of the iront 4 so as to provide an opening through which the'hand may be nserted as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, so
that a grip may be obtained upon that part form and unbroken appearance.
The shut- Serial No. 589,720.
ter 5 may be mounted on a hinge 6 which 55 may be oi the spring retained type, as illus* trated in Figure 3. When so mounted, the shutter will automatically return so as to close the hand opening when the hand is withdrawn.
in the embodiment illustrated in Figure 2, either a spring hinge may be used or the shutter may be allowed to close by gravity.
ln order to prevent the contents of the drawer from piling up before the shutter so as to prevent its opening, a guard 7 may be attached to the inside of the iront 4 so as to insure a clear space before the shutter to allow opening thereof. ln the embodiment illustrated in Figure' 2, the guard 70 may ta re the form ot' a diagonal partition 8 as illustrated. This will prevent the contents ot the drawer in any way from intertering with the movement of the shutter.
It will be noted that this inventionprovides a simple and inexpensive drawer pull which at the saine time presents a neat and attractive appearance when closed. rl`he shutter 5 closes the hand opening when not in use but is movable by the hand inwardly S0 so to expose the `grip provided by the portion 9 on the front 4:. Upon release of the shutter, it will again close the opening automatically. Upon closingthe shutter nieves into the opening and thereby coinpletes the front so as to present a continuous surface. The guards 7 or 8 effectively prevent interference ot the contents of the drawer with the operation of the shutter.
lt is obvious that various changes may be made in details of construction without de parting from the spirit of this invention; it is therefore, to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to the speciiic details shown and described.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
i. ln a pull 'for drawers or the like, the combination with a front having a hand opening, oi' a shutter for closing said opening.
2. In pull Jfor drawers or the like, the combination with a iront having a hand opening, ot a shutter movable into said opening and to a iush position to complete the iront.
3. ln a pull for drawers or the like, the combination with a front having a hand opening, of a shutter located n said opening 5. ln a pull for drawers or the like, the to complete the front and movable inwardly. Combination with a front having a hand 10 4. In a pull for drawers or the like, the opening; of a shutter 'for Closing said openycombination with a front having a hand lng', and a guard therefor. 5 opening, of a shutter movable inwardly to In testimony whereof I all permit entrance of the hand and movable this 7th day of"Sept.,1922. forwardly to a flush position to complete the from.
