JOSEPH SCHAEFER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TU *FAN BUFF!" KFUM' i COMPANY, OF CLEVETLLAND, OHI, A CORPURTIQE EF wssnnnnsnn'r.
Application filed May 16,
TO all 'whom it may concem:
Be it known that T, JosEPH SCHAEFER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Wastebaskets, of which the following is a Specification. v
This invention relates to sheet metal waste baskets for use in ofiices or other places.
The object of the invention -is to provide,
an improved sheet metal waste basket which is made of two'metal sheets or pieces, so that it is simple in construction, Can be made and assembled at relatively low cost, is light 1 in weight, and is quite durable.
Other objects of the invention are in part obvious and in part will appear more in detail hereinafter. v
The invention Comprises the construction 2 and arrangement of parts hereinatter described and claimed.
In the drawings, which represent one embodiment of the invention, Fig. l is a perspective View; Fig. 2 is a development of the 2 side Wall member in panelled form, ready to be bent up and assembled with the bottom; Fig, 3 is plan View of the bottom member; Fig is a bottom plan view of the completed basket, One of the leg members being 0 broken away and in section; Fig. 5 is a detai sectional elevation on the line 5-5, Fig. L and on a larger Scale; Fig. 6 is a'side elevation of the outside of one of the upper corners of the basket; Fi 7 is a sectional ele- Vation on the line 'F-, Fig. 6; Fg, 8 is a sectional plan View on the line 8 8 Fig. 6; Fig. 9 is a detail sectional plan view on the line 9 '9, Fig. 1; and Fig., 10 is a sectional elevation on the line 10-10, Fig. 9.
4 The basket shown in the drawings com prises two metal members, shown respectively in Figs. 2 and 3, the first of which is bent or foided to form the side walls and the second of which forms the bottom 4 The bottom member, indicated at 1. is of substantially rectangular or square form with its edges provided with shailow reoesses to form projecting corner portions 2 which interlock with the metal of the side wall so members to more rigidly secure the parts to ether,
.-he side wait member is made of a sinie sheet of metal. The particnlar baset shown 3.921. Serial No. 469305.
in the drawings is slightiy tapered from top to bottom and the side Wall sheet is therefore of peculiar'shape to provide the necessary taper. This side well member, indieated at 3, is pressed or indented out of its normal plane' to form four shallow panels indicated at 4. The metal extending Vertcally between the panels is later bent at right angles along the lines to form Vertically extending substantially L-shaped or angle shaped oorner portions 5- which, as indicated in Fig. 1, extend downwardly below the bottom of the basket to form le s 5 and space the basket from the floor. O ther portions of the metal extend -contnuously along the top edge of the sheet to form re-enforcing braces 6 extending around the upper edges of the completed basket, For this purpose the upper edges of the blank is provided with tabs or wings 7 which are bent inwardly as at 8, and then downwardly on a gradual inciine as at 9, Fig. 7, thereby formmg sloping portions in the top of the basket which Prevent lodgement or Collection of dirt or foreign matter :from sticking in the Corners or angles of the .basket when it is turned upside down for dumping purposes. The lowe): edge of the sheet is also provided with ears or tabs 10 which are turned inwardly at angles of 90 as shown in Fig. t, and :form supports for the bottom member 1. One of the Vertical edges of the sheet is also provided with an ear or extension ll, which as indicated in Fig. 8., is bent around the adjacent portion of the opposite end of 'the side well member and the extreme edge of which s bent inwardl toward the center of the bas-,het and' exten s into the panei portion thereot, as shown at 12 This arrangement provides a 'vertically entending seam which is ciosed by the neighboring inwardiy lying portion of the metal forms a closed joint without any neoessity' of soidering or Welding the parts to close the Tn assembhng the bashet the side wali por tions are shaped to the proper form and spot welded at intervais along the Vertical post portion as indicated conventionally at 13, Fig, 1., The bottom is held in piece upon the supporting ears 10 and is spot weided thereto, as at 13% Fig. i.
The edges of the downwardly extending tegswhere they pnoject below the bottom of the basket, are bent inwardly both alongx the tions of said side Wall portions and looking Vertical edges as at 142 and along the orithem together. zontal edges as at 15 to avoid Sharp corners 2.
