BOX-COVER PRESS.
Application led November 15, 1922. Serial No. 601,104.
To all cac/tom t may concern.' a work support l which may be con venientlj,Y
- Be it known that I, JOSEPH WV. Romains, a in the torni or t-restle provided with pairs citizen oi the United States, residing at Wilot upright guides 2 at opposite ends with ton, in the county of Hillsborough and State the guides appropriately spaced apart to 5 ot New Hampshire, have invented certain ccive between nach of them a slide member 3 C0 new and use 1ul improvements in Box-Cover oi? appropriate length. These slide members Presses, of which the following is a speciare joined by cross members 4, 5 and S, rciication. spectively, the member 3 serving as a sup This invention has reference to box cover port for a box or container T desio'ned to conpresses and i155 Object is to provide a device tain fruit or vegetables, while the cross piece 65 whereby a boxY cover may be subjected to 4 joins and participates. in the movement of pressure to hold it positively in position on the SllGS 3. the box during the nailing of the cover there The Cross pieces 4 and 5 are joined by a on. coiled spring 8 tending` to cause the slides 5';
In accordance with the invention, there is to rise under the contractive action of the 70 provided a support for the box to be nailed, Spring 8- with a movable follower operating to clamp The cross piece (i carries a follower 9 dethe box cover in position, with the mecha;-V signed to bear upon and force a cover memnism for so holding the box cover operating ber 10 into engagement with the box or con- Zo on the toggle principle to positively 106]; tbn tainer 7 to be held against the top of the bof; 75
parts while the nailing is proceeding, where- 7 during Dile nailing Operation. upon the holding or locking mechanism may rihere are two slides 3 provided, one on be released and returned by the action of a each side of the structure between the respecspring to the unlocked position. tive pairs or guides 2.
The mechanism employed for locking the Connected to each slide 3 on opposite sides 80 cover on the box` during the nailing proof the structure is a toggle member made up cedure, is of extreme simplicity and yet is ot two joined links 10a, 11, the link 10a being positive in action. connected to the guide member 2 on one side The invention will be best understood of the slide 3 by a pivot pin 12, while the 2i@ from a consideration of the following delink 1l is connected at one end by a pivot- 85 tailed description taken in connection with pin 1.3 to the lower end ot the slide 3 and to the accompanying drawings forming part of the aCljaCIlt end 0f the link 1.0. this speciiicationR with the understanding The link 10a is overridden at one end by an however that the invention is not confined to Offset eXtensiOn 14 of the ink 10a which ex- I any strict conformity with the showing of tension has an angular continuation 15 ter- 90 the drawings but may be changed and modiminating a pin 16 adapted to pass through a Iied so long as such changes and modificaslot 17 in the terminal portion 1S oi' a yoke tions mark no material departure from the 19 having a junction portion 2O of sufiicient salient features of the invention as expressed length to extend from one side of the strucio in the appended claims. ture to the other and shaped to constitute a 95 ln the drawings forming part of this specfoot rest for the manipulation ot the toggle iiication; members 10, 11.
Figure 1 is a side elevation ci the mecha- Applied to the terminal portions 18 ot the nism for supporting and clamping the box in toot rest 2O are clips 21 each provided with 4o position, but with the clamp structure in the a perforation 92 to pass a bolt Q3 also pass- 100 unlocked condition. ing through a perforation 24 atthe angle Fig'. 2 is a view similar to the showing of junction of the continuation 15 with the link F ig. 1but with the clamping structure in 10a so that movement ot the yoke 2() will the locked position holding the cover in conause an alinement of the toggle links 10,
dition to be nailed. l1, or a breaking thereoi2 in accordance with 105 Fig. 3 is a. front elevation of the device the direction of movement of the yoke 2O showing the cover in the clamped position. thereby straightening` or locking the toggle Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are separate views of parts or loosening the toggle to the action of the of the clamping structure. spring- 8 as the case may be, the bolts 9.3
Referring to the drawings, there is shown causing a participation ci the toggle in the eil movement ot the toot treadle Q0 or with the spring 8 as the case may be.
rlhe trestle structure l may either followT the usual Construction ol trestles or may be otherwise formed to answer the same purpose, that is to support and hold the box 7 to which the cover is to be nailed tast when held in place by the follower 6.
Then the box is mounted on top of the trestle and the follower 6 is brought into Contact With the cover l0 of the box, the structures are firmly united und the nailing of the Cover in place may proceed, after Which the yoke structure 20 is raised there-- by breaking,- the toggle connection 10a, ll, and allowing the spring' S to act to raise the slide 3 and elevate the follower G automatirally.
The action ot the box clamping structure may be rapid and certain, with the follower 6 locking in the depressed position und the toggle holding the follower during the process o nailing the boX Cover.
'What is claimed is l. A box cover press comprising a support for the box, slides on opposite sides ot the support, pairs of guides outside or" the support, with a slide between each pair ot guides, a. follower connected to and participating in the movements ot' the slides, and a toggle actuator for the slides.
2. A box @over press comprising a support for the box, slides on opposite sides of the support, pairs of guides outside of the support, with a slide between each pair of guides, 'follower connected to and` partieipatinfc)` in the movements of the slides. and a toggle actuator Yfor the slides, said `guides and follower having associated with them un extension spring tending to hold the toggle actuator in the lextended or looked position.
ln testimony whereof, l atlix my signature hereto.
