It is to be noted, however, that the lip 8 of the lever clamping member does not act as a cam to depress the floating member into clamping action on the strap. The primary function of this lip is to assist or guide the floating clamping member in its neecessary movements to engage the strap.
, By the construction shown not only is a very simple and effective buckle produced, but the lever clamping member is incapableof turning over backward and thus causing the user annoyance and difficulty in operating it. As indicated in Figure 5, the lever clamping member stands up substantially at right angles to the frame of the buckle when in the open position and is held in this position by the lugs or trunnions of the floating clamping member coming to rest in and being stopped by the upperends of the slots 16 or their equivalents, the housing 20. The inclined extension 7 throws the lip 8 so far forward that when the lever clamping member is raised to release or receive a belt end to be clamped by the floating clamping member, said lever clamping member does not go over backward, and it is not necessary to manipulate the buckle as a whole in order to effect these operations.
In order to increase the bite of the floating clamping member on the belt, it may be longitudinally milled or otherwise roughened as indicated at 21 in Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 7.
While I have shown and described the invention as embodied in a belt buckle, it is to be understood, of course, that the invention is applicable to buckles for other purposes, and the claims herein are to be understood accordingly.
As already indicated,the invention is su ceptible of structural variations and these and others are permissible within the spirit and scope of the invention and the claims hereinafter made. i
What I claim is 1. A lever belt buckle, having a frame provided with sides having arcuate guideways, a lever clamping member pivotally mounted in said frame, and a floating clamping member arranged to be moved back and forth in said guideways inthe frame and operatively connected with the lever clamping member. A lever belt buckle, having a frame provided with sides having arcuate guideways, a lever clamping member pivotally mounted in said frame and having a depending lip arranged in advance of its pivotal axis, and a floating clamping member having a defined path of movement in the arcuate guideways and engaged by the said depending lip.

A lever belt buckle, having a frame provided with sides having arcuate guideways, a lever clamping member pivotally mounted in said frame and having a depending lip arranged. in advance of its pivotal axis, and a floating clamping member having a defined path of movement in said arcuate guideways and in constant engagement with said depending lip. p
