WILLIAM E. MUNSLOW, OF STEUBENVILLE, OHIO.
nnrnxrne FOUNTAIN.
Application filed June 10,
7 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. MUNsnow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Steubenville. in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drinking Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drinking fountains, and more particularly to a fountain which is adapted to be attached to the ordinary faucet.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a fountain of the character stated which may be readily applied to a faucet of standard type. A further object is to provide a fountain of simple construc tion and operation which may be utilized also as a spigot. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a fountain constructed in accordance withmy invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary central vertical. section through the fountain with the valve turned into position to be used as a spigot;
Figure 3 is a similar view of the valve in the reverse position to that illustrated in Figure 2; 1
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken in the plane of the lower opening in the valve.
The fountain includes an elbow 1 adapted to be secured by a coupling nut 2 to a connecting device 3 which may be of any suitable or preferred type, but is preferably similar to that illustrated in my U. S. patent for connector, Number 1,450,108, dated Mch. 27, 1923. A short pipe or nipple 4 extends from the. other end of the elbow 1 and is provided at its outer end with a T 5, pipe 4 being connected to this T by an enlargement 6. A hollow cylinder valve 7 fits snugly through head of the T and is provided on its upper end with an enlargement constituting a fountain 8 which has an axial bore 9' communicating with the valve 7. .Valve 7 is provided with a lower 1921. Serial no; 476,539.
slot 10 and-with an upper aperture 11 A plug 12 is threaded into valve 7 adjacent to aperture 11. By adjusting this plug the effective size of the aperture may be readily regulated as desired. The plug also serves as a closure member to separate the lower portion of the valve from the upper portion.
When valve 7 isturned into the position illustrated in Figure 2 the water flows from tube or'pipe 4 into the enlargement 6 from which it enters valve 7 through slot 1Q and is discharged downwardlyfrom the V valve. As the aperture 11 is diametrically opposite to slot 10, no water can enter the upper portion of the valve. When it is desired to utilize the device asa drinking fountain, the valve is turned through a half rotation into the position illustrated in Fig ure 3, in which position the water enters the upper portion of the valve through aperture 11 and is discharged through bore ,9 of fountain 8, slotlObeing positioned at the opposite side of head 5 so that no water can enter the lower portion of the valve. For adjustingthe valve I provide a radially projecting handle 12 which operates in a slot 13extending in one-half the circumference of head. 5, slot 10 being brought into operative relation to the enlargement 6 when the handle is at one end. of slot 13, aperture 11 ,beingxbrought into operative position when the handle is at the other end of slot 13.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, a. tubular member provided with a head in direct communication withsaid member and I disposed substantially at right angles thereto, a hollow valve open at both ends rotatably mounted through said head and provided with openings in its peripheral wall spaced apart axially and circumferentially of the valve, and a plug within the valve between said openings, said plug being adjustable axially of the valve for varying the effective size of one of said openings. 2. In a device of the character described, a tubular member provided at one end with a head in direct communication with said member and disposed substantially at right angles to the same, a tubular valve open at both ends rotatably mounted through said head and provided with openings through its peripheral Wall spaced apart axially and cireumferentially of the valve, said openings being disposed substantially in the plane of the tubular member, and a plug threaded into said valve between said openings and adjustable across one of the open.- ings for varying the effective size thereof.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM E. MUNSLO'W.
