Description

, 1. Russ.
Sand-Bands for Hubs of Vehicles.
No.147,349. Patented Feb.10.1874.
WiTNI555= INVENTGR UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ROSS, OF G-REENV'ILLE, llIIOHIG-AX.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAND-BANDS FOR HUBS OF VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,349, dated February 10, 1874; application filed December 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JNO. ltoss, ot' (lrrcenville, in the county of Montcalm and State of lltlichigan, have invented certain new and useful Imrn-ovcments in Dust-Protectors for Hub-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable 0th crs skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to an improved attachment for protecting the boxes ot hubs from sand and dirt; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, which will be more fully described hereafter, whereby all foreign substances are effectually prevented from entering the box, so as to prevent unnecessary wear, and to make the draft easier upon the animals.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a. represents an ordinary wooden hub, having fastened to its inner end, by means of screws or other suitable devices, the two circular flanges c d, the enter one of which is wider than the inner one, so as to form a projecting shoulder over the flanges attached to the square part of the axle. Passed over the axle are also two flanges, 0 g, which are centered inside of the two flanges on the hub by means of the oval cap 1', slipped over the axle. These flanges c r are formed in halves, and are bolted or fastened together in such a manner that they can be readily put upon or taken off the axle whenever desired. The inner flange g is just small enough to fit inside the inner flange d on the hub, while the outer one, 0, fits snugly inside of the one 0, and abuts against the outer edge of the flange d, so as to form a tight joint. Upon each end of the two half-flanges, where they are fastened together, is formed a flange, 0, which extends outward at right angles to the two flanges e g, and has its outer end 1 turned upward. These flanges o are inclined downward at their outer ends, and serve not only as means of secnrin g the two halves together. but of dividing the space between the two flanges c 9 into two compartments or chambers. Any dust or dirt which may pass through. the joint formed by the two flanges d 0 falls into one of these chambers, and is caught on the flange 0, which, as the wheel revolves around, passes it downward out of the hole 2 in the flange 6 over the outside rim 3..
In case the band on the inner end of the hub should project outward over the end, and the flange on the axle be 1. rge enough to fill it, the outer flange c on the hub may be dispensed with. Where the hub fits upon a pipebox for iron axles, the cap a will be made square instead of oval.
Having thus described my invention, I clai1n 1. The combination of the two flanges c d on the hub with the two flanges c g on the axle, and cap 1', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The two flanges c g, made in halves, havin g the flange 0 and holes 2, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of December, 1873.
JOHN-ROSS. \Vitnesses:
