Definitions
- This invention relate to a mechanical press for the manufacture of horseshoes orother articles and provides a press that is simple to construct and capable of exercising great pressure and in which the movable pressure face travels in true parallel. Backlash and excessive wear are reduced to a minimum in the members which take thecompression load by so'constructing the apparatus that the sliding action on the hearing surfaces isvery small while the bearing area is very large.
- the improved press difiers essentially as regarcs its design and construction from standard practice, as it does also in the selection and placement of the principal mem bers or parts by and through which the pressure is exercised.

- Figure 3 is a perspective view, with some of the parts shown in sections of an edgepressure-ram plate not provided with pivots, but capped with hardened material on each hearing face and as an example of how its bearing acts, it is shown standing in a broken piece of the ram, which ram has in its grooves liners of channel form, also this figure shows two broken sectionsof the loeating and withdrawing plates in their correct position to accommodate the pivots of a plate of the kind shown in Figure 2.

- the action. of these edge-pressureramplates a which contain no joints to wear or become loose, are given a herring-bone or laminiform position of placement in the machine in press in a single ram machine. This movement is accomplished by means of a num berof edge-pressure-ram-plates a, or their equivalents.
- the rams or pressure platens b are constrained, when in operation, in the double ram machine to approach one another by means of the movement imparted to two or more sets of edge-pressure-ram-plates a, each set consisting of a minimum of two plates, one set of which, provided with rounded edges a, Figure 2, (/9, Figure 3. at one end engage in grooves b Figure 3 in that face of the ram remote from the die carrying face thereof, and the opposite ends thereof are also provided with rounded edges a or a which engage with and are fulcrumed in grooves provided in a bearerplate or plates e, Figure 1, suitably attached to the frame of the press f.
- some of the ram plates may, as shown in Figure 2, lie-formed with pivots a adapter to extend into holes Z4 in locating and withdrawing plates 70, and some of the pressure ram plates may, as shown in Fig. 3, be formed without such pivots, the plates without pivots being conveniently interposed with those having such pivots.
- the plates may be formed without holes k adjacent the ends of grooves 73 which receive plates without pivots, or the plates *7: may be omitted or cut away adjacent the'ends of the grooves I) which receive plates without pivots.

- the rounded or bearingends of the edge-pressure-ram-plates or like constructed parts a Figure 9 when required for heavy ervice, are provided with separate attachable parts or units (suitably affixed thereon 'n slides, or by screws or, the like so that th can be e ily renewed) either in the fo "-1 of wear resisting wedge-wisecaps of u igure 6, or rounded or channelled bearingends 0?, in each case made of hardened steel or other suitable material and, in the case'of the wedge-wise caps afl capable of longitudinal adjustment in a manner similar to that employed for the liners or blocks 72.
- edge-pressure-ram-plates a or like constructed parts s may be made in one piece, or they may be capped with hardened material as beforementioned, but preferably they will be constructed in laminar form from two or a number of plates of metal a as shown in Figure 8, said plates being made with parallel or wedge-wise edges adjacent to their capped ends a which are provided with reduced parts a for attaching to the plates which are made to suit either a parallel or a wedgewise form of capping as required.
- the section may be described as of dumb-bell form; this be ing provided to give an increased bearingarea or sliding surface in contact, andis especially adaptable for high speed operation of the press.
- the section may be constructed in various ways and is given merely by way of example.
- edge-pressure-ramplates When the pressure platens or rams have approached each other to their nearest position or in other words, when the press is closed, the edge-pressure-ramplates are vertical or at right angles to the bearer-plates and the pressure faces of the platens or rams.
- the operating means causing this be forementioned condition to occur in the double ram machine are composed of edgepressure-slide plates acting upon the face of oneend of each pressure-platen or ram in amanner similar, but in th1s case at right angles to the edge-pressure-ram-plates.
- the repetition operation. of a double-ram machine briefly is as follows An article is placed between the faces of the pressure-platensor rams (b, c, Figure 1, or 6, Z), Figure 9), and then the motion controlling the rams is made operative, which in the case where a constantly revolving flywheel 0 is used, is done by causing the clutch to engage, and this in turn revolves the crankshaft p and causes reciprocation of the connecting-rod '9", which operates on the edge ofthe pressure platen or ram Z) either directly ( Figure 1) or on the pressure platens or rams b Figure 9) indirectly through the beam t, slide 8' and slide plates 8, (causing them in a vertical machine to move in a horizontal.
- member 02 is secured to the bed or bolster 0 of the press-frame f, provision is made through saiddie-member n and the bed or bolster c, byproviding a passage-way for outcuttings or the like produced by the dies when the press is" in operation to fall through, and such passage-way opens out into cavity 03 in the frame f.
- the ram or pre's' sure-platen b is constrained to approach I the bed or bolster 0 ofthe press by means of movement imparted to two or more sets of edge-pressure ram-plates a, each set consistin'g of two or more plates a, and said plates aare all provided on their hearing ends with "rounded edg'es a, one set thereof each attheir'one'end a en a e and are;
- the fly wheel 0 causes thecrankshaft p to revolve, which constrains the connectingrod r to impart movement to the reciprocating bearer-plate g which in turn causes the edge-pressure-ram plates to assume a ver-' tical path or arrive at right angles, or approximately so, to the plane of the bed or bolster c, and in so doing these plates a cause the ram 6, which is constrained by its side blocks in the guides to approach the bed or holster 0 of thepress,'and in so doing exercise pressure on whatever material may beplaced between said ram 6 and bolster 0.
- the same press can he made to have a continuous motion in which a regular reciprocating movement is 'given to the pressure platens or rams, and when this is done, hotforging, hot stamping, thicknessing and. other similar work can be accomplished, in addition to using the machine for ordinary press work,
