HALF TO KENNETH ALEXANDER ROBERTS, or LONDON, ENGLAND,"
; MECHANICAL rnnss.
Application filed October 24, 1921. Serial No. 509,994.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TTRANK T-IUMrnRIaa' subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Boscombe, Bournemouth, l-lampshire, England, have invented new and useful Im provements in Mechanical Presses, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relate to a mechanical press for the manufacture of horseshoes orother articles and provides a press that is simple to construct and capable of exercising great pressure and in which the movable pressure face travels in true parallel. Backlash and excessive wear are reduced to a minimum in the members which take thecompression load by so'constructing the apparatus that the sliding action on the hearing surfaces isvery small while the bearing area is very large.
The improved press difiers essentially as regarcs its design and construction from standard practice, as it does also in the selection and placement of the principal mem bers or parts by and through which the pressure is exercised.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of one type of single rain power-press of the type whichuses edge-pressureram-plates with the piv-" ots integral with the bar or plates connect ing them. I s
Figure 2 is a perspective view on an cn-- larged scale of a solid edge-pressure-ramplate or of an edge-pressure-slide-plate having its pivots integral with the bar or plate connecting them.
Figure 3 is a perspective view, with some of the parts shown in sections of an edgepressure-ram plate not provided with pivots, but capped with hardened material on each hearing face and as an example of how its bearing acts, it is shown standing in a broken piece of the ram, which ram has in its grooves liners of channel form, also this figure shows two broken sectionsof the loeating and withdrawing plates in their correct position to accommodate the pivots of a plate of the kind shown in Figure 2.
Figure l is a part view, on a. reduced scale, of the front elevation of the machine shown in Figure 1, with the locating and withdrawing plates removed to enable the action of the machine to be more clearly understood. A
. V v, Figure 5 is a side elevational view, on an,
enlarged scale. of a-portion of an edgepressure-ramplate or the like part shown in crosssection with its wedge-wise capthereon 1n its relative position shown in longltudinal section, together with its bearer-plate, ram, i or like part containing a wear resisting liner with wedge-like face, both in longitudinal i section and in their-relative working posi tion to the other parts thereon, and the setscrews in side elevation and in their 00-.
operating relative clamping position for adustment of the sliding wedge-formed parts.
Figure 6 is a. front elevation onan enlarged scale, of the same parts as shown in Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a' cross-sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of an edgepressure-ramplate, or the like part, with enlarged rounded-edges to increase the bearing area Figure 8 is a cross-sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of an edgg-pressure-ramplate or like part made up 1n laminar form from a number'of sheets or strips of ma terial or metal and containing as separate units in or on two or more of their edges (whether these are provided parallel, wedgewise, or tapering), rounded capping or bearing faces with a reduced portion remote from said bearing-faces which is: secured by rivets, screws, orwelding. i
I Figure 9 is a front elevation, partly section, of one type of double-ram power press showing the relative position of removable parts when the machine is fully open, the front locating and withdrawing plates being removed.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the drawings.
The novel features and essential parts, and around which the press-machine forming the subject of this invention is designed to function, are what are herein referred to as the edge-pressure-ram-plates a or such other mechanical equivalents therefor. and their direct concomitants. The action. of these edge-pressureramplates a, which contain no joints to wear or become loose, are given a herring-bone or laminiform position of placement in the machine in press in a single ram machine. This movement is accomplished by means of a num berof edge-pressure-ram-plates a, or their equivalents. The rams or pressure platens b are constrained, when in operation, in the double ram machine to approach one another by means of the movement imparted to two or more sets of edge-pressure-ram-plates a, each set consisting of a minimum of two plates, one set of which, provided with rounded edges a, Figure 2, (/9, Figure 3. at one end engage in grooves b Figure 3 in that face of the ram remote from the die carrying face thereof, and the opposite ends thereof are also provided with rounded edges a or a which engage with and are fulcrumed in grooves provided in a bearerplate or plates e, Figure 1, suitably attached to the frame of the press f.
In any set of edgepressure-ramplates some of the ram plates may, as shown in Figure 2, lie-formed with pivots a adapter to extend into holes Z4 in locating and withdrawing plates 70, and some of the pressure ram plates may, as shown in Fig. 3, be formed without such pivots, the plates without pivots being conveniently interposed with those having such pivots. The plates may be formed without holes k adjacent the ends of grooves 73 which receive plates without pivots, or the plates *7: may be omitted or cut away adjacent the'ends of the grooves I) which receive plates without pivots. For example, the end r m plates of a set may be provided with pivots and the intermediate plates may be formed without such pivots. The plates with pivots, in addition to functioning as pressure plates, also serve as links to connect the rams and bearer plates.
The grooves Z) in the pressure-platens or rams band the grooves c Figure l, provided in the bearer plates 6 and also the grooves 9' provided in the reciprocating bearer-plateg are each contained in or on a separate attachable part or unit piece it, Figure 6 (when the machine is employed for heavy service), which part or parts is or are in the form ofwear-resisting anti-friction liners or blocks composed of hardened steel, bronze or other suitable material, said liners or blocks 7L being provided on their faces remote from those engaging with the edge-pressureram-plate with wedge-wise faces h and, when constrained by means of set-screws or their equivalent 7L2, are capable of moving longitudinally and in such a manner as to act in conjunction with wedge-wise and grooved faces provided on or in the pressure-platens or rams Z), the bearer-plates e, the reciprocating bearer-plate g, or such other like part. and thus take up any wear or inequality of distance that may exist between the rounded faces of the edge-pressure-ramplates a or the like part and also enable the U169 apart of the bearing-surfaces thereof in each case to be equalized or adjusted. V here no provision for adjustment is necessary, i. e.. for like service no liners or blocks it will be employed. but for medium service renewable channel liners 72 of hardened material as shown in Figure 3 will be used. a
The rounded or bearingends of the edge-pressure-ram-plates or like constructed parts a Figure 9, when required for heavy ervice, are provided with separate attachable parts or units (suitably affixed thereon 'n slides, or by screws or, the like so that th can be e ily renewed) either in the fo "-1 of wear resisting wedge-wisecaps of u igure 6, or rounded or channelled bearingends 0?, in each case made of hardened steel or other suitable material and, in the case'of the wedge-wise caps afl capable of longitudinal adjustment in a manner similar to that employed for the liners or blocks 72.
The edge-pressure-ram-plates a or like constructed parts s may be made in one piece, or they may be capped with hardened material as beforementioned, but preferably they will be constructed in laminar form from two or a number of plates of metal a as shown in Figure 8, said plates being made with parallel or wedge-wise edges adjacent to their capped ends a which are provided with reduced parts a for attaching to the plates which are made to suit either a parallel or a wedgewise form of capping as required.
In the edge-pressure-ram-plates as shown in cross-section in Figure 7, the section may be described as of dumb-bell form; this be ing provided to give an increased bearingarea or sliding surface in contact, andis especially adaptable for high speed operation of the press. The section may be constructed in various ways and is given merely by way of example.
When the pressure platens or rams have approached each other to their nearest position or in other words, when the press is closed, the edge-pressure-ramplates are vertical or at right angles to the bearer-plates and the pressure faces of the platens or rams. The operating means causing this be forementioned condition to occur in the double ram machine are composed of edgepressure-slide plates acting upon the face of oneend of each pressure-platen or ram in amanner similar, but in th1s case at right angles to the edge-pressure-ram-plates.
These edgepressureslide-plates s engage,
and connected at the other end by means of abearing 6 to a connecting rod 1 or its equivalent, which in turn is connected to the crank p of the machine, the crank-shaft p of which carries a flywheel 0, and suitable clutch motion as ordinarily employed; or the closing and opening of the pressure platens or, rains I) may be accomplished by means of any equivalent mechanical device. Locatingland with-drawing plates is having the holes are provided for locating the pivots a and the bearing faces a or the like in the grooves 12', e, g or the like in the rams b, and the bearer plates 6 and g orthe like, and serve in conjunction with the pivots a of the edge pressure ram plates a or the like, as means for opening or with= drawing the ram faces from their closed position, the edge pressure ram plates'with pivots (i serving as links for holding the pressure platens or rams Z) in their correct working positions. Said plates is are secured to the bearer plates e, g and the rain Z) or like parts by screws k or the like.
Preferably the repetition operation. of a double-ram machine briefly is as follows An article is placed between the faces of the pressure-platensor rams (b, c, Figure 1, or 6, Z), Figure 9), and then the motion controlling the rams is made operative, which in the case where a constantly revolving flywheel 0 is used, is done by causing the clutch to engage, and this in turn revolves the crankshaft p and causes reciprocation of the connecting-rod '9", which operates on the edge ofthe pressure platen or ram Z) either directly (Figure 1) or on the pressure platens or rams b Figure 9) indirectly through the beam t, slide 8' and slide plates 8, (causing them in a vertical machine to move in a horizontal. path) and these rains Z) are constrained to close by means of the edge-pressure-ram-plates a controlling them, and by so doing apply great force to ma terial interposed between the pressure platens or ram faces; when this is done the pressure-platens or rams automatically return to their full open position and the operation can be immediately repeated at the will or convenience of the operator. 7
In the single-ram type of machine as shown in Figure 1 where the bottom die:
member 02 is secured to the bed or bolster 0 of the press-frame f, provision is made through saiddie-member n and the bed or bolster c, byproviding a passage-way for outcuttings or the like produced by the dies when the press is" in operation to fall through, and such passage-way opens out into cavity 03 in the frame f. In this machine when in operation, theram or pre's' sure-platen b is constrained to approach I the bed or bolster 0 ofthe press by means of movement imparted to two or more sets of edge-pressure ram-plates a, each set consistin'g of two or more plates a, and said plates aare all provided on their hearing ends with "rounded edg'es a, one set thereof each attheir'one'end a en a e and are;
fulcrumed in grooves b in that face "of the ram 5 remote from the die carrying-. facev thereof, and ea-ch at their other end" a engage "with and are fulcrumed in" grooves g in a reclprocating bearer-plate g, which plate 9 in the single-ram press" is interposed between two sets of edge-pres sure-ram-plates a; the second set thereof, each at their one end a, engage and are fulcrumed'in grooves g in the beforementionedreciprocating bearer-plate and each attheir other end a engage and are fulcrumed in grooves e in a bearer plate 6.
When this press is in operation, the fly wheel 0 causes thecrankshaft p to revolve, which constrains the connectingrod r to impart movement to the reciprocating bearer-plate g which in turn causes the edge-pressure-ram plates to assume a ver-' tical path or arrive at right angles, or approximately so, to the plane of the bed or bolster c, and in so doing these plates a cause the ram 6, which is constrained by its side blocks in the guides to approach the bed or holster 0 of thepress,'and in so doing exercise pressure on whatever material may beplaced between said ram 6 and bolster 0.
By increasing or varying the throw of the crank 39 so as to cause the edge-pressure ram-plates a to pass the right-angle-line above referred to, in relation to the bed or bolster c of the press, two power strokes or pressure deliveries instead of one for each revolution of the crank 72 will be the resultant condition obtained.
The same press can he made to have a continuous motion in which a regular reciprocating movement is 'given to the pressure platens or rams, and when this is done, hotforging, hot stamping, thicknessing and. other similar work can be accomplished, in addition to using the machine for ordinary press work,
By aflixing suitable dies on the ram and the bolster parts of the machine, horseshoes and a large variety of other articles can be easily hot-stamped, cold-pressed and die-finished'in the same machine, which, by its adjusting devices can be set to give either aslow continuing pressure, a blow, or an intermittent movement.
