IMPROVEMENT IN DUMPING-CARS.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 147,34H, dated February 10, 1874; application filed December 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL O. I MEYER, of Yankton, in the county of Yankton and Territory of Dakota, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Gravel-(Jars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 0f the drawings is a representation of a side view of my gravelear. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
This invention has relation to cars for ballasting railroads; and it consists in eombinin g with a platform-car a hopper-shaped receptacle and a leveling device, as will be hereinaf ter explained.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the platform of the car, and B the receptacle for containing gravel or other material suitable for ballastin g railroads. This receptacle B has four inclined sides, and is the shape of a truncated pyramid inverted, so that its smallest end extends down below the horizontal plane of the axles of the truck-wheels. The receptacle B may be made of boiler-iron, and it should be so applied to the platform A that its discharging end is in the center of the the receptacle B.
roadway, and as near as practicable to the cross-ties of the rails. O O are two doors, which are hinged at a a, and are firmly held by means of hooks and levers D *atching under pins 0 c. The doors (,l can be opened when it is desired to dis charge the load by simply moving the hand levers D. G represents an angular levelingbladc, which is secured to the rear wall of the receptacle by rodsj, and which is arranged in a proper position for leveling or spreading the gravel laterally as the same is discharged from In practice, two of these levelers will be used, one arranged in front and the other behind the disc]large-opening of the receptacle B, so that the gravel will be levcled whichever way the car be moved.
This car will also be found very useful for carrying grain and other substances.
W hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- v The angular leveler G, combined with the hopper-shaped receptacle B, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I. claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witi'iesses.
CARL l. MEYER.
IVitnesses PHIL. K. FAULK, BARTLETT TRIPP.
