W. D. KYLE TRAFFIC INDICATOR Filed Dec( 5o. 1921 WITNESSES 1,473,315 TES PATENT oFFiwcE.
Patented Nov. 6, 1923.
UNITED STA WILLIAM D. KYLE, F MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
TRAFFIC INDICATOR.
Application led December 30, 1921. Serial No. 525,842.'
To aZZw/wm z't may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM D. KYLE, a citizen of the United States, and resident ofl Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Traffic Indicators, `of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification. The invention relates to traflic lights. A The object of the invention is to provide a traiiic light of simple and inexpensive construction and adapted to be mounted within the pavement or road at street intersections of) other places where an indicator is desira. le. l
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof. i
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view through a device embody-ing the invention;.Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing a modified form of cap connection; Fig.` 4 is a plan view of the structure shown in Fig. A3. In the drawings the numeral 5 desi ates a member forming the base and guar portion of the device.
The base portion of this member is preferably circular and provided with a .centrally disposed cup-shaped portion 6 forming a lamp casing in which the lamp recepvided with a screw thread to engage the threaded portion 21 of the cap to form a detachable connection, spaced Spanner wrench openings 22 being provided in the top of the cap for turning it. In Figs. 3 and 4 I show apertured ears 23 on the cap through which screws 24 pass to detachably secure the cap in position.
An electric lamp 25 is mounted inthe receptacle 7 with its bulb projected above the base of the device so that its light rays will pass through the openings 17 of the guard.
In order to protect the lamp from the elements and from foreign matter a lantern globe 26, surrounding the bulb, is provided. This globe is preferably a cylindrical member, preferably of thick glass, having i'ts lower edge seated in an annular recess 27 in the base and its upper edge seated in ,an annular recess 28 in the cap, compressible packing rings 29 being seated in these recesses to'prevent injury to the globe when it is clamped in positionby the attachment of the 'cap 20.
The cap 20 is provided with a conical reector portion 30 adjacent the top of the globe so as to assist in directing the light rays outwardly in radial directions along the surface of the roadway in which the device is installed.. The removal of the cap 85 permits ready removal of the lamp or globe in case replacements or cleaning is necessary.' The globes 25 may be replaced at small ex- 1o ed tacle 7 is mounted upon a pipe nipple 8 which connects with .a conduit 9 through which the conductor 10 carrying the current wires 11 and 12 passes. y.The lower end of pense. D n
I desire it 'to be understood that th1s .1nvention is not to be limited to any speclfic form or arrangement'of parts except in so the portion 6 is provided with a laterally extending anchoring flange 13 and the outer portion of the base is provided withy a depending annular Hange 14. The flange 13y serves to anchor the device in the `concrete foundation of the roadway and the flange 14 also serves as an anchor to prevent lateral displacement of the device. The guard portion`of the member 5 in` cludes a conical outer wall 15 extending fromI the outer edge of the base to a circular top 1G, said wal-l having radially extending ,openings 17 therein and being reinforced by vertically disposed spaced ribs 18 extending from the base to a position adjacent the top 16. The top has a centrally disposed opening 19 covered by a removable cap 20. In F igs. 1 and 2 I .show the opening 19 profar as such limitations are specified in the` claims.
What I claim asmy invention is:
1. In a traiicv indicator, the combination of a base, a guard `having aperture'd inclined walls and an opening in its top, a removable cap for said opening, a lamp receptacle mounted in the base, an electric lamp in said receptacle, and a globe surrounding the bulbof said lamp and clamped between said cap and base.
2. In a traffic indicator, the combination of a circular base, a conical ard having an -apertured wall and an openingl in its top, a removable cap for said opening, a lamp receptacle mounted in the base, an electric lamp in said receptacle, and a globe sur- -rounding the bulb of said lamp and clamped 11o between said cap and base, said cap having a conical reflector portion adjacent said lamp. y
3. In a tra'ic indicator, the combination of a member having a circular base portion provided with a depending centrally disposed cup portion and a conical guard portion provided with side openings and a central top opening, a removable cover cap for said central opening, said cap having an annular recess therein and said base portion having an annular recess therein adjacent said cup portion, a cylindrical glass globe having its upper and lower edges seated in Leraars said recesses, a lamp' receptacle in said cup 15 and an electric lamp mounted 1n l portion, said receptacle and having its bulb surrounded by said globe.
4. In a trailic indicator, the combination of a base, a lamp receptacle mounted in the base, an electric lamp in said receptacle, a cylindrical globe surrounding the bulb of said lamp, `an apertured guard for said globe, and means for clamping the globe against the base.
In testimony whereof, I aix my signature.
WILLIAM D. KYLE.
