Be it known that I, ALBEI-:T-ossrnno, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Lewiston, in the county of Winona and State oi`Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in ron Benders; and I do hereby declare the following tokbe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. f
This invention relates to a bending machine andV particularly to suchy a machine adapted to be operated by hand and employed in blacksmith shops, garages, etc. The machine is designed to bend fiat bars into various shapes, to bend round stock into eyes, to bend pipe, tubing, etc.
It is an object of this invention to provide such a machine comprising a main frame and a bending trame Jformed ot spaced bars which iframes are pivoted together and the main frame being adapted to be attached to a work bench, a post, or held in a vise.
. 1t is a further object of this invention to provide said main frame with a stop block suitably supported and eccentrically mounted to present various surfaces in operative position. y
it is still another object oi this invention to equip the bending 'frame with an adjustable device for forming eyes.
It is also an object of this invention to provide the main frame with simple and eiicient gauging means.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set 'forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters reiter to the same parts throughout the different views and, in which, v

Referring to the drawings,
The device is seen to comprise a main frame formed ot spaced liat bars 1 having a spacing collar 2 therebetween secured to the bars 1 by a headed and nutted bolt passing through said collar and bars. The bars 1 converge at one end and have Yspacing members 3 riveted thereto and are adapted to be attached to a working bench or post A by bolts 4ta extending therethrough and between said bars. The outer ends of the bars 1 are apertured to receive a pivot pin i forming the connecting means for a bending frame formed of bars 5 spaced at one end to tit between the bars 1 and which converge at their other end where they are riveted to a handle member 6. The lower bar 1 has bolted thereto beneath the same, by spaced bolts 7 and 8, a bar 9 which is spaced therefrom. A small lat bar 10 having a hub pivoted on bolt 8 and disposed between members 9 and 1 is supported on the former and in turn forms the supporting means for the pin 4;. The bar 9 is provided with an aperture 11 in alinement with the pin i to which said pin is adapted to pass at certain times.
The bars 1 are provided with a pair ot spaced aligned holes 12 adapted to receivey a pin member 18, the lower end` of which rests upon the bar 9 and theupper end of which is reversely bent to extend parallel to the main portion thereof. This latter bent end is spaced from the main portion a distance equal to the spacing ot the holes 12 so that said end can enter the hole adjacent to the one occupied by the main portion of the pin. The bent portion of this pin is adapted to receive a collar or roll member 14 which is rotatable thereon and which is held in position slightly above the top bar 1 by a pin 15 projecting Jfrom one side ot said bend. The main portion ot thepin 13 extending between the bars 1 is adapted to pass through a longitudinal aperture formed in a ystop block member 16, the said aperture being located at different distances from the plane surfaces forming the sides ot said block. A member 17 having its end bent around the bolt 7, and held thereon by the nut and washer on vsaid bolt, extends along the top of the lower bar 1 and forms a support for the block 16. A guage member 18 formed of a small round rod is provided and :formed substantially as a circle concentric with the pin 4, vthe end of said member being formed with eyes through which passes the bolt 7, said eyes being disposed between the bar 9 and the lower bar 1.

The bars 5 are likewise provided Ywith a plurality ot spaced aligned holes 22 adapted to receive a pin member 23 similar to the pin 13. The pin member 23 as well as the pin 4 are adapted to receive rolls 24 and 25 `ot various diameters, which rolls will be rotatable on said pins. v
A bending blade or member 26 extends in a Vertical plane between the bars 5 and has a, shank member secured thereto having a This member and socket are adapted to be engaged by the rounded end of a rod 27 which is threaded adjacent said rounded end and extends through a nut `28 abutting against the inner portion of the hollow handle member 6 through which the rod27 extends. Said rod 27 is formed with a transverse handle member at its outer end and is held in suitable position in said handle member 6 by pins extending transversely through said handle. A coil tension .spring 28a is connected at one end to one ofv the rivets passing through handle 6 and at itsfother end to an eyelet secured in the shank of member 26 and is adapted to retract the latter member toward the handle 6 when such movement is permitted by the rod 27.`
A member 29 having a U-shaped portion is adapted to be attached to the top of bars 5.by suitable headed and nutted bolts passing through the holes 22 and this member is provided at its front edge with a bevelled or sharpened edge as is also the member 26. The pinr 4V projects upwardly above the upper bar'land is adapted to co-operate with the member 29 in the bending operation either with or without a bending roller thereon. i
The rrollers on lthe pin 4 can be replaced with appropriate bending dies such as the pipe bending die 30 and the pins 13 and 23 may then be provided with appropriate grooved rollers such as shown at 31 in Figs. 6 and 7.
Flat bars maybe bent in the machine by placing the same against one side of the block 16 as shown by the pieceof work B in Fig. 2. Such bars may be' bent about the pin 4 or the roller thereon by rollers carried by pin 23, the bending roller and the stop block being adjusted in the proper holes in the, barsv 1 and 5 to give the desired bend. The ends of the dat stock can be bent to One or more slidingv form eyelets by means of the blade member 26.- Such bendingl may be done by giving the bending frame 5 small increments of turning movement and moving the member 26 progressively inward after each of such movements by turning the rod 27. The stock is thus bent closely about the bending pin or roller. Vhen thefrod 27 is progressed toward pin 4, the nut 2S will bear against the end of handle 6 and the rod will pro-- gress through and push the member 26 inwardly. Said member will be held in position by thepin 23passing between the memprojection 26a on the shank formed by the members 5 the same can be re- Y moved by moving member 10 to uncover the aperture 11 and then tapping the top of pin 4 to cause the same to drop through the said aperture and thus release the bent work. The desired anglev of bend can Vbe indicated and the amount of bend of the work `gauged by the clips 19 which may be adjusted at va- Y rious points about the member 8. If it is desired to bend arnumber of pieces alike, the gauge rod 2O and the clip 21 may be used to indicate the distance of the bend from lthe* end of the stock as illustrated in Fig. 4.V

From the above description, it is seen thatk applicant has provided an extremely simple and eflicient bending machine and one which may be found of great service in small shops. p
The parts of the Vdevice are made from very common and standard material and can be made very strong and rugged. The machine can easily be attached to a post or other convenient place in the shop andthe K machine', though operated `by hand, is capable of bending flat stock 'g of kan inch in thickness by 3 inches wide, said stock being bent cold. A bending machine comprising a main frame formed of spaced horizontal bars converging at one end and adapted to be attached to a support, a bending frame also comprising spaced horizontal bars converging` at one end and carrying a hollow handle member, a roller-carrying bending pin pivotally connecting the bars of said frames at one end thereof, a work-contacting and bending member movable between the bars of said bending frame, and. means extending through said handle member for contacting and moving said work-contacting member toward and holding the same to the work, said means being provided with an operating handle beyond the end of said hollow 2. A bending machine comprising a main frame, a bending frame comprising spaced horizontal bars, said bars converging at their outer ends and carrying a hollowT handle, a roller-carrying bending pin pivotally connecting the inner ends of said bars to said main frame, a work bending member movable longitudinally between the bars of s-aid bending frame, a nut abutting said handle, a screw extending through said handle engaging said nut and contacting said work bending member to move said member inwardly, and a spring secured to said member and handle to retract said member.

A bending machine having in combination, a main frame comprising spaced horizontal bars adapted to be attached to a support, a bending frame also comprising spaced horizontal bars, a vertical pivot pin connecting the inner ends of the bars of said frames, the bars of said main frame having series of alined holes therethrough,l a pin insertable in any pair of said alined holes, an ,angular stop blockveccentrically and means for supporting said block above the lower bar or said main frame.
7. A bending machine having in combination, a. main frame comprising vertically spaced bars, a bending frame swingable relatively thereto,
a member passing through the bars of said main frame,
a stop block held between said bars by said member, the upper end of said member being bent inte parallel relationship with the main portion thereof and a wo-rk contacting member on the bending frame for bending work about said pivot pin.
8. A bending machine having in combination, a main trame comprising vertically spaced members, a bending frame comprising vertically spaced members, a pivot pin connecting the ends of said frames forming a bending pin about which the work is bent, a member secured to the main frame beneath and spaced from the same and swinging means on said member for supporting said pin, said member having an opening therethrough in alignment with said pin whereby said means can be swung to permit the pin to pass through said opening.
9. A bending machine having in combination, a. main frame, a bending frame, a pivot pin connecting the ends of said frames and forming a bending member about which the work is bent, work engaging means on said bending frame for bending work about said pin and movable means t'or supporting said pin which can be moved to permit said pin to drop.
