To aZZ 10 item it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT HOSSFELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewiston, in the county of Winona and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bending Machines; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a bending machine of a simple type adapted to bend cold or hot material, the machine being of a type adapted to be attached to a post or bench in a shop and being operable by hand. Such bending machines are of great utility in small blacksmiths shops, garages, farm shops, spring factories, etc.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple and compact bending machine of minimum size and weight which will quickly and efficiently bend bars up to approximately one inch in diameter or of cross section one-half inch by three inches, as well as tubing and piping.
It is a further object of the invention to provide such a machine comprising a fixed frame and a bending frame swingingly connected thereto, said frames being adapted to carry various bending anvils and bending members, which members preferably are adjustably held in position.

Referring to the drawings, the machine comprises a main or stationary frame comprising the spaced horizontal bars 1 bent at one end to be disposed somewhat adjacent each other and bolted together in spaced relation by headed and nutted bolts 2. The main frame is adapted to be connected to a post, work bench or other similar suitable member and, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the same is shown as secured to a bench by being bolted to the brackets 3 which are, in turn, bolted tothe bench &. The bars of the main frame are each provided with a series of spaced vertically extending and alined holes 5. If the bar-of stock is not thus contacted closely adjacent the bend, this objectionable curlingof the edges will occur and a perfeot'bend will not be formed. The block 26 is, of course, free to turn on its axis if necessary. At thestart of the bending operation, however, one 'fiat side of the block isinposition against theside oii' the yoke 9.

The members 29 and 32 may be adjusted longitudinally of the main frame and bending frame so as to be brought to the desired position to suit the stock. It will be also understood that the blocks 26 and 27 can be disposed in other positions on the main frame and bending frame by inserting their supporting pins through other pairs of holes provided. The yoke 9 can be adjusted longitudinally of the main frame so as to be brought to the desired position by manipulation of the nut 11. In the arrangement of the machine shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, the yoke 9 is removed from the block 6 and an anvil member substituted therefor. This member comprises an eye bolt 40 having a threaded stem extending through the block 6 and equipped with an adjusting knurled nut 41. A headed and nutted bolt 42 passes through said eye bolt and arms 43 which have lugs disposed at each side of said bolt and clamped thereto by the bolt 42. The arms 43 diverge and have horizontal port-ions carrying inwardly directed pins which seat in apertures formed in lugs 44 disposed at each end of a. semi-cylindrical block 45. The arms 43 also have pairs of lugs 46 projecting at each side of the bars 1 forming means for guiding said arms longitudinally of the bars when the nut 41 is operated. A coiled tension spring 47 is secured to one side of a block at one end and has its other end secured to the eye bolt 40. A bending member 48 formed of a flat plate is disposed between the bars 12 of the bending frame and is riveted to an offset bar 49, said bar and plate extending on opposite sides of a pin 28 which forms a guiding means therefor. The inner end of the handle member seats in a recess formed in the end of bar 49 and said bar is kept in contact with said end by a tension spring 50 secured to said bar and to one end of the. handle members 13. It will be understood. of course, that the blocks 26 and 27 are removed when the plate 48 and bar 49 are used. The machine, otherwise, is the same as already described in connection with Figs. 1 and 4.
In the use of the machine arranged as shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, a flat piece of stock shown as Z) in Fig. 7, preferably adapted for use as a spring, such as used on automobiles and other vehicles, is operated upon. The bending frame is swung to the position substantially shown in Fig. 5. The stock is then inserted between the block 45 and the pivot pin 15. the same being engaged on the side engaged by the block 45 by the edge of the bending plate 48. The bending frame is then swung in a clockwise di rection and the end of the piece of stock 7) is bent closely about the. pivot pin 15. lVhen the bending operation is begun the block 45 is in the position shown in Fig. with its fiat side extending parallel to the center line of bars 1. As the stock is bent around, the same contacts strongly against the block 45 and the latter is rotated with the stock as the stock is pulled around the pin 15. The block 45 thus moves with the stock and the spring 47 is extended. If, however, the bending frame be moved backward a. trifle so as to temporarily release the stock the spring 47 will again pull the anvil to the position shown in Figs. 5 and 7. It will be noted that the surface of block 45 lies very close to the pin and the piece of stock is contacted throughout its width by the edge of the plate 48. The end of the stock is thus bent about the pin 15 and the eye formed therein without any chance for the stock to curl outwardly at the edges as it will do if it is not contacted firmly adjacent the bent portion. The block can be adjusted to suit the stock by manipulation of nut 41. The bending plate 48 can also be moved toward the pivot of the frames by advancing the jaw rod 35. lVhen said jaw rods retract the spring will pull the plate 48 and bar 49 outwardly.
In Fig. 8, both the yoke 9 and the spring bending block 45 are removed with their attached parts and a block 51 is used. This block is somewhat elongated with curved sides having formed therein semi-circular grooves. The block is held in position. as shown, between the bars 1 by a pin, extending through a pair of the holes in said bars. A bending roller 52 is carried between the bars 12 on a pin extending through a pair of holes therein. The block 51 is adapted for the bending of pipe or tubing and in the operation thereof, a piece of pipe 0 will be placed against the flat side of the spacing block 6 extending between the same and one side of block 51. The bending frame is now swung to the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 8 and the roller 52 brought against one side of the pipe. The bending frame now being swung clockwise. the pipe will be bent, as shown in full lines in said figure. By moving the pipe slightly be tween the. bending operations, the same can be bent into a complete circle or in a plurality of coils.
Vhere several pieces are to be bent in the machine to the same angle. the gauge members 23 and 34 may be used. The member 23 can be used to locate the end of the piece of stock to be bent and the member 34 can be set to proper place on the supporting member 20 to indicate the angle to which the: stock is to be bent. The thumb screws used to position the members 23 and 24 can be easily operated and said members quickly adjusted.

A bending machine having in combination, a stationary frame, a bending frame including spaced members, a pivot member connectingi said frames at their ends about which work is adapted to be bent, a block carried. by said stationary frame and disposed between said spaced members thereof, a work engaging member carried by said stationary frame, means engaging said block as a base of re-aotion for adjusting said work engaging member longitudinally of said stationary frame, and an adjustable work bending member carried by said bending frame.

A bending machine having in combination, a stationary frame, a bending frame, a transverse pivot member connecting said frames adjacent their ends, a substantially rectangular yoke member disposed in a plane substantially parallel to the axis of said pivot member, means for adjusting said yoke longitudinally of said stationary frame, and a bending member adjustable longitudinally of said bending frame for engaging and bending work held in said yoke.
14. The structure set forth in claim 13, said yoke having top and bottom sides and an end portion of angular cross section connecting the said sides, said bending member having a work-engaging portion parallel with the edges of said end portion of said yoke.
15. A bending machine having in combination a stationary frame comprising spaced substantially parallel members, a bending frame comprising spaced parallel members, a pivot connecting said frames adjacent the ends thereof, a block carried by said stationary frame, a work engaging member carried by said stationary frame and movable longitudinally thereof including means extending through said block, a member engaging said means and block adapted to adjust said work engaging member longitudinally of said frame, and a work bending member carried by said bend ing frame and extending between said parallel members thereof.
16. A bending machine having in combination, a stationary frame, a bending frame, a pivot member connecting said frames at their ends about the axis of which work is adapted to be bent, a work engaging member carried by said stationary frame, said member comprising two surfaces intersecting to form an edge, said member including a curved surface with which the work contacts, means for moving said work engaging member longitudinally of said stationary frame, and a bending member in said bending frame for engaging the work and bending the same.
