Be it known that I, LEON S. GREENBERG, of the city of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding Flasks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
y invention relates to improvements in molding fiasks which, although capable of general use for molding plastic substances and casting metals, is more especially designed for the use of dentists in the molding of dental plates.
The invention as hereinafter disclosed is a further development or improvement inian invention for like subject matter disclosed in my United States Patent-No. 1,331,193, datedFebruary 17, 1920, and is especially characterized and difi'ers theref'rom in that provision is made for a cutting edge, and with a perceptible lessening of the amount of material needed in its manufacture, with consequent reduction in cost of production.
One of the important objects is to provide a molding flask with cutting edge contact of the several parts instead of the flat contact surface,which results in the separating of any overflow from the mass, of plastic substance used by dentists.
Another object of my improvement is to provide on the top piece a multiple of vents for the escape of any surplus substances when expanding, and of gases when molten metal is being cast.
A Vfurther object of my invention is to provide a molding fiask capable of greater scope ofV use and of greater simplicity than my prior invention, in that the projecting portions on bottom and middle pieces -are constructed with improveduses and permit the escape vof the overflow Vof plastic substances, and vfurthermore Vafunnel is provided .for pouring molten metal if desired;

, as'wellas those mentioned in my U. S. Patent No. 1,331,193, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, vand arrangement of parts 'hereinafter described, and claimed, and illustrated in the laccompanying drawing forming a part of the specificat-ion. in which:

The molding flask as illustrated in Fig. 1 is composed of a bottom piece or receptacle 1, a middle piece 2, and a-top piece or plate 3. Bottom piece l, Fig. 1, is provided with recesses or apertures formed within projections or extended porti0nsf5fi, V51?, and 5 of the general shape shown. Said projections are constructed integral with bottom piece 1 slightly above themiddle portion thereof so as to permit the heads of locking pins 9?, 9'),
and 9 to turn while the device is resting on afiat surface, more clearly shown in- Fig. 1. Bottom piece 1 is curved inwarclly at 12, so
top plate 3 by means .of a multiple of double headed locking pins 11a, 11b,`and 11, vwhen desired, which is more clearly shown in Fig. 3. Middle piece 2 is constructed as shown Vin the various views with both its top and bottom portions curved to form a cutting contact edge, as best seen in the cross section view, Fig. 3, the'lower edge 14 being in close contact at 13 with the upper edge of V bottom piece 1 around both pieces. The upper edge 15 in a similar'manner fits in close contact with the top piece 3. Middle piece .2 is also provided with projections integral therewith 1 0a, 101", and .10, which' extend IthroughV the. recesses or aperturesiprovided in projections on top and bottom pieces 1 and 3 respectively. Theseheads are firnly riveted, pinned or otherwise attached to the looking pins, making what is called double headed locking pins, all of the general shape, and made `to iit theirk respective recessesi snugly, so that when they are turned with 'the fingers, the device is securely and firmly locked. The turning of one head reciprocally turns the opposite head, and thus thedevice may be. locked oi unlocked from the top or bottom as desired. Top plate 3, Fig. l, is of the same general shape as the other two principal pieces. It is provided with projections or prongs 4-3, lib, and Alc, forming recesses to correspond and fit over the top of projecting pieces lOa, 100, and 10c respectively of middle piece 2, Figs. l and V2. Top piece 3 is flaton both top and bottom differing in this respect from the other pieces.
Top pieces is also provided with a multiple of vent holes'at 5 to permit the escape of' surplus or expanding substances, and in case of the molding of metals, the escape. of gas. For use' in casting metals there is also provided a pouring funnel 4, Fig. 4:, attached as illustrated to bottom piece l, but may be located as desired in any other appropriate place. It will be notedthat each projecting portion integral with middle piece 2, Fig. 3, extends away from the main ring in such a manner as to leave openings between bot- Itom 1 and top 3 and middle piece 2, which provide a space for taking care of the overflowing' plastic substances cut off when the pieces are assembled and clamped and locked, which surplus subst'ances may then be readily removed.
In use my improved molding fiask is assembled by applying bottom piece vl to middle piece 2, into which the prepared molding substance is placed, after which top plate 3 is placed over middle piece 2, and the three pieces are locked by simply half-turning with the fingers each of the double headed locking pins lla, llb, and llc, using preferably the upper heads Ga, 61), and 6c thereof. A turn of any pin head causes a corresponding motion or turn of the opposite pin head. To unlock the device, again'manually half turn each pin head Vparallel to' the recesse's, and top plate 3 may then be removedexposing the casting. Another half turn of each double headed locking pin lock middle piece 2 and bottom piece l again, which cannot be accomplished with other known dental flasks, and work may be performed on the casting in that position, or it may be entirely removed by repeating the unlockingl process.
Various changes Vwithin the enlarged scope ofthe invention may be made in the particular construction of the device, and also in the size and organization of the pieces thereof without departing from the spirit of my invention, such as the 'addition of one or more rings or pieces with similar cutting edges, to make a higher and larger molding flask, which is sometimes desirable.
am aware that prior to my invention vulcanizing or .moldiiig flasks have been made comprising top, bottom and middle pieces of the same general shape, and for the ysame purpose as Vmine, but not with the peculiar shape and features thereof, or with the novel means for locking provided in my invention, nor with the specially provided cutting edges or spaces for caring for overflowing substances, therefore, I d-onot claim the device, and combination of pieces thereof, l:-roadly,*but what I do claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l.. in a molding flask of the character described, the combinatioii of a bottom piece with 'upper portion thereof inourved, a middle piece with both lower and upper portions incurved, a top piece, all constructed so that when assembled the points of contact of the three pieces form cutting means to separate any overflowing substance from the mass contained within said pieces, and a plurality of locking pin means for locking said pieces together, as and for the purpose described.

A molding fiask, comprising a bottom piece with upper portion incurved to form a cutting edge, provided integral therewith with a multiple of extendedV portions, each containing a recess, a middle piece with both upper and lower portions incurved to form cutting edges at points of contact with bottom and top pieces respectively, said middle piece being also provided with projecting portions extending above and below through respective reeesses provided on bottom and top pieces, and through each such projecting portion is inserted la double headed locking pin. a top piece having provided integral thercwith with a. multiple of extended portions, each containing a recess, and a 'multipleoof double headed locking pin means for locking said pieces together, as and for the purpose described. i 3. In combination, amolding fiask, comprising a bottom piece provided with a cutting edge on its upper portion and a plurality of projecting portions integralV therewith each containing a recess therein, said projecting portions being located substantially above the middle of said bottom piece and a funnel opening to permit entry of molten metal, a middle piece provided with cutting edge on both its upper andV lower contact points and a plurality of projecting portions integral therevvith, each containing a hole through Which a double headed locking pin passes, each of said projecting portions are constructed to extend above and below through the recesses provded on top and bottom pieces respectively with space to permit room for overflow of any substance escaping from said molding flask, a top vplate provided With a plurality of extended portions, each containing a recess forming prongs over Which the heads of the respective double headed lockingpins pass When locked Which at the same turn locks the opposite head under the similar V prongs on bottom piece, and a plurality of double headed locking pins.
