To all whom t may concern.: l
Be it known that l, RICHARD D. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fort Smith, in the county of Sebastian and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved Coke-Drawing Machine, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates more particularly to a machine for taking coke out of beehive ovens and has for its general object toprovide a machine highly efficient for its pur l pose and sol compact as Ito allow suiiicsient spiace on a standard width coke 7oven dock or wharf to permit the piling of the coke between the machine and the railroad track for loading. n
Important objects also are to provide a scraper beam so mo-unted as. toy have the maximum movements into and out of the oven but in keeping with the aim of comp-actness; and to provide for lateral turning movement of the beam as well as for vertical tilting movement as may be required.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a machine for the stated purpose improved in various particulars with a View topromote convenience of assemblage, oper ation and control, as well as to provide a construction in which the different moving parts are properly guided and braced and the machine thus made durable.
The above and other objects as will ap-V pear are attained by a ecke drawing machine mounted on a truck `traveling on a track with the olven 'walls at one side, there being space for the coke pile on the opposite side of the track, my improved assemblage permitting of the travel of the machine on the track in a more limited space `than is possible with machines of ordinary construction.
The nature of the invention and its distinctive features and characteristics will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one eX- ample of the invention.

In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example track rails 10 arelaid in front of thecoke oven A. The wheels 11 of atruck designated generally by the numeral 12 run on the rails 10. The truck 12 has a transverse track13,'the rails of which are of channel form. Running in the channel railsof the track 13 are wheels 14,011 the axles 15 of a carriage designated generally by the numeral 16 and having a platform 17. To the platform 17 a platform 18 isswivelled by a king bolt 19, said platform` 18 being above platform 17 as clearly shown in Figures 3 and 4. On
the platform 18 is a frame presenting spaced sides 2O on which is mounted an elongated tubular guideway 21 by a slot and pin connection, there being slots 22 in the sides 20 and a pin 23 passing through said sides and through flanges 24 on. said guideway 2l.. The scraper beam 25 having a scraper head 26 is adapted to telescope in the guideway 21, said guideway having steadying Vrollers 121 at the interior, thesides 27 of said scraper beam being `of channel form to engage said rollers 121. yTo move the scraperbeam 25 longitudinally into or out of the guideway 21, I provide a screw 28 in the guideway 21,'the rear end of the screw being held to a block 29 in said guideway, Lthe screw havingparallel flanges 30 and theblock v29 having corresponding annularr grooves 31 so Vthat the screw has a swivelled connection with the guideway at the said rear end. The screw is plain or has the threads turned off as at 32, 38, the screw at its front end extending through an internally threadedv 'block 84 on the rear end of the scraper beam h there being a collar 35 on the screw at t e front end against which the block 34 l may come toa bearing in the eXtreme outward movement of the scraper beam 25.Y rIheV whereby to limit the action of the screw 28 in actuating the beam and disengage the latter to prevent over-winding after the scraper bar has reached the limit of a for" ward or rearward movement. Y Suitable means lis provided for driving the screw 28, there being conventionally indicated in the dra-wing a motor 36, the shaft 37 of which has in the illustrated example a bevelled pinion 87a in mesh with a similar 'inion 38 on the rear end of said screw. t is to be vobserved that the motor 36 for driving the screw 28 is mounted on the guideway 21 or at -all events is rigid with the guideway Yand with the platform 18 to preserve a constant relation between the motor and said lguideway and platform irrespective of the transverse movement of the platform 18`and carriage 16 on the truck 12 and irrespective of the tilting of the guideway or the telescoping movements of the scraper beam 25.
Vith the above described arrangement the carriage 16 may be moved transversely of the truck and rails 1() by reason of the wheels 14' traveling in 'thechannel track rails 13 and in such transverse movement of the carriage 16 the guideway 21 and'scraper beam 25 will be carried bodily by an axial movement thereof into or -out of the coke oven,
according to the direction of travel of the carriage 16.
Y In addition, the telescoping beam 25 may ybe given longitudinal movement by the screw 28 to the desired extent into or out of the guideway 21. Thus, it is to be noted that a longitudinal movement fof the beam 25 into or out of the furnace is in partei? fected bythe movement of the carriage 16 to carry with it said scraper beam and in part by the movement of said scraper beam relatively to the guideway and carriage.V For swinging the scraper beam 25 laterally in the coke oven, that is to say, for giving said scraper beam an angular position at either side of the medial vertical plane of vthe coke oven, the platform '18 is Vturned with the king bolt 19 as an axis. Besides the turning movement on the king bolt 19 and the axial movement given the beam by the transverse travel of carriage y16 and the telescoping of said beam, the guide 21 and scraper beam 25 may be rocked vertically with the cross pin 23 as an axis. The slot and pin connection as at 22, permits of the bodily rising of the guide 21 and scraper beam on the platform 18, if for any rea-son thisshould be found desirable. To Vholdthe guide 21 in the'tilted position suitable means is provided, the following means being em 'ployed for therpurpose 1n the illustrated way 21 are entirely withdrawn from, the
coke oven and clear of the front wall thereof, they may be turned through a complete circle about the king bolt 19. Forturning the platform 18 and the mounted guideway 21 and scraper beam 25 about the king bolt 19 I provide an annular rack 44 'rigid with the platform 17 and I provide a pinion 45 on a vertical post 46 partly mounted in the platform 18 and provided with a handwheel 47. Byturning the hand wheel 47, post 46 and pinion 45, said pinion will be caused to walk or travel about the periphery of the rack 44 thereby turning the platform 18 and the super-structure'thereon including the guide 21 and scraper beam 25. In thli turning movement 'of the platform 18 I guide and brace the same by depending keepers 48 onthe platform 18, the lower ends of the same being directed laterally inward as at 49 beneath the rack 44, saiid keepers being provided at diametricallv op posite sides of the platform 18. The/king bolt 19 extends through the platform 18, gear 44, and platform 17 and between hanger brackets 50 on the under side of the platform 17, said'hangers having transverse holes therein to receive a transverse pin 51 which is passed through said hangersV Y and through the king bolt 19 below the platrorm 17.
For giving transverse movement to the carriage 16, that is to say. for causing the wheels 14 of said carriage to travel in the channel rails 13, I provide racks 52 on bars 53V secured to the platform 17 at the under side, said bars 58 being disposed in pairs Vone pair at each side of the Platform adjacent to the inner sides of the rail 18, the axle 15 having bearings in said bars 53'. The racks 52 have their teeth at the under side as clearlyshown in Figure 3 and they mesh with pinions 54 on a sha-ft 55 which is driven by a motor 56 through a suitable reducing gear train 57. said motor and gear train being mounted on the truck 12.
rlhe positions of the pinions 5a on the truck l2 are such that the racks 52 will disengage themselves trom the teeth et the drivingr pinions 54 at the limit of a Vmovement ot the carriage 16 in either direction on the truck l2 so that the drive pinions 5st may continue to turn after giving the maximum movement to the carriage and without affecting the carriage alter the disengagement of the racks.
F or propelling the truck l2 a bevel pinion 58 is keyed on the shaft 55 and meshes with a similar pinion 59 on one of the axles 60 of the truck.` Thus, the machine is propelled on the traclr l0 and transverse movement given to the carriage 16 by a motor on the truck frame while the screw 28 for ef- `footing the telescoping movement of the scraper beam is driven by the motor (36) on the carriage.
The hub 61 of the pinion 59 is adapted to be shifted by a lever 62 to throw said pinion 59 into or out of gear with the drive pinion 58.
l would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment ot my invention, l do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure trom the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my,invention, l

2. ln an apparatus of the class described, a wheeled truck, a guide on said truck, a support on which said guide is vertically tiltablc, means turnably mounting said supr 'for lateral movement and a. scraper longitudinally movable in said guide. ln an aiiparatus ot the class described, a scraper beam, a guide in which said beam cscopes, and a screw in said guide adapted lo havey threaded engagement with said bram, said screw l'ieing held against axial movement.
ln an apparatus of the class described, a wheeled truck, a carriage movable transversely on the truck, a guide on said carriage :l ,posed transversely of the truck, a scraper im telescoping in said guide, a screw in said guide adapted to have threaded engagement with the scraper beam, and means to hold said screw against axial movement, said screw having unthreaded terminals to cause disengagement of the beam at the extremity ot each movement into or out of the guide.
An apparatus ot the, class described including a wheeled truck, a carriage having platform turnably mounted on the truck, a second platform turnably mounted above the irst platform, means to move said platforms in unison transversely of the truck, and means to turn the second platform independently of the first platform; together wvith a scraper beam supported on said second platform.
6. An apparatus of the class described including a wheeled truck, a carriage movable transversely on said truck, a guideway on said carriage, a screw in said guideway, a scraper beam movable longitudinally by said screw, and a motor mounted on said guideway and having driving engagement with said screw.
7. An apparatus of the class described including a wheeled truck, a carriage mounted to travel transversely on the truck, colre drawing means mounted on said carriage, a rack on the carriage, a ypinion turnably mounted on the truck and engaging said rack, and means to drive said pinion, said rack being adapted to disengage itself from the pinion at the extremity of movement of the rack in either direction.
8. ln a coke drawing apparatus, a scraper beam, means to support the same for movement into or out of the coke oven, a screw coaxial with the beam and adapted to have threaded engagement therewith for actuating the beam, and drive means for said screw.
9, ln a coke drawing apparatus, a scraper beam, means to support the same for movement into or out of the coke oven, a screw coaxial with the beam and adapted to have threaded engagement therewith for actuating the beam, and drive means for said screw; together with means to limit the longitudinal movement of the scraper beam without stopping the screw.
l0. ln an apparatus of the class described, a wheeled truck, a carriage mounted on said truck for transverse movement-thereon, a guide on said carriage transversely of the truck, a scraper beam movable axially in said guide, means mounting said guide for vertical tilting movement, an arch over said `guide, and a transverse pin adapted to variously engage said arch for holding the guide in various vertical adjustments.
