This invention relates to new and useful nninovemenis in machines for removing old ties and placing new ties on railways Without disturbing the rails. Y
The object. of this invention is to rovide a machine which will be strong an durahli, which can be economically and rapidly operated and which will remove one tie and place a new one with the least amount of manual labor on the part of the gang operating the machine.
A further object of my invention is to provide in a machine of v,this character means for readily and quickly removing the machine from the track on which it may he standing when in operation so as to permit the passage of the regular trains on the road without causing any delay tothe Fbillltl.
M v invention, therefore, consists primarily in providing in a machine of this character means for engaging a tie and moving it transversely of and beneath the/rails of a. track so as to either remove a tie from beneath the rails or place a tie in the groove lett h v the removal of a tie from beneath the Valls.
My invention further consists in providing an independent or auxiliary truck at nach end of the machine and means for normally supporting the truck so that the wheels thereof will be held above the track on which the fnain Wheels of the machine rest and means for lowering the said trucks so as to bring the wheels thereoninto contact with an auxiliary7 track laid across the main track and means for causing an npward movement of the whole machine after the` wheels of the auxiliary truck have been brought into Contact with the auxiliary trae-k so as to lift the main wheels above the said auxiliary track.

Again referring to the drawings 1 represents the platform of an ordinary at car which is provided with the usual trucks 2 including axles 31nd wheels/1. 0n the platform 1 is mounted a boiler 6 and Van engine 7 which has the usual steam connection with the boiler 6. The arrangement for connecting the engine` with thedrivin means of the machine is as follows -t one Side of Vand parallel with the shaft 12 is journaleda short shaft 15 in-su ports 1 6, which are mounted en theplat orm 1. On' the shaft 15 is loosely-mounted a gear wheel 17 or ranged. to mesh with the gear wheel 14 on the shaft 12. The gear wheel 17 has formed integral therewith a clutch member 18,*and on the said tshaft 15 its slidably'mounted a clutch member 19 so as to rotate with said shaft 15. Itwill therefore be seen that when the engine is started and the lever 20 shifted so as to cause an engxagement of the clutch members the engine t rou h the operative connection just describ will drive the wheels 4 so as to propel the car as desired in a forward direction, and of course by sim ly reversing the engine the car can be cus to travel in the opposite direction.
The tie fplacing and extracting mechanism is mounte and arrangedas follows: To the under side of the platform 1 is rigidi secured a double row of brackets 32 an between said brackets are supported two channel bars 33 which are laced with their flanges touching so that they form a rectangular guidewa which extends from side to side transverse y of the car. On each of the inner faces of this guideway are mounted a series of rollers 37. In the space between the said rollers is a beam 38 which is prefl r y to the guideway and the channel bars are secured together by plates 39. 'It will therefore, seen that the said beam will be supported at all times by the rollers 37, and the said beam will be free to move longitudinally of the said guideway so that it can be caused to project beyond the guideway at either side of the machine as desired. The means for actuatin the said beam is arranged as follows: n one side of the beam 38,' and extending lon 'tudinally thereof is secured a rack bar 40 y means of bolts 41. On the platform 1, in suitable supports 48, is journaled a shaft 49 which extends parallel with the shaft 12 which is connected to the engine shaft. At one end of this shaft is loosely mounted a gear 50 which carries the clutch member 51 formed integral therewith and on the shaft 49 is slidably mounted a clutch member 52 so as to turn with said shaft 49. A clutch lever 53 is operatively connected with the clutch member 52 by means of which the said clutch, member 52 can be shifted into or out of engage ment with the clutch member 51 on the gear wheel 50. On the opoosite end of 'Said shaft 49 is rigidly secured -a bevel gear 54. A shaft 56 is mounted on the platform 1 in supports 57, the said shaft 56 be.- ing arranged at a right angle to the shaft 49. 0n the saidshaft 56 is slidahly mounted a sleeve 58 so as to turn with the said shaft, and on the ends of said sleeve are rigidly secured bevel gears 59 which can hc caused to engage with the bevel gear 54 ou the shaft 49 by shifting the said sleeve. in one direction or the other. It will of course be under stood that when the bevel gear 59 on one end of the sleeve 1s in mesh with thc bevel gear 54 on the shaft 49 the shaft 56 will he driven in one direction and when the bevel gear on the other end of the sleeve ."S is in engage ment with the bevel gear 5t said shaft 536 will be driven in the opposite direction. At each end of the shaft 56 is formed a worm 61, At each side of the platform l, in proximity to the ends of the shaft 56, are vertically arranged shafts 62, the said shafts bein supported in bearings 64 secured on the si e o one of the channel bars 33. On the upper ends of the said shafts 62 ar-c rigidly secured worm gears 63 arranged to mesh with the worms on the ends of the shaft 56. On each of the vertically arranged shafts 62 below the platform are rigidly secured gears 66 in line with the rack 40 on the beam 38, the channelbar 33 being provided with n slot 67 through which the said gear wheels 66 extend so that they can engage with the said rack bar 40. Now when the engine is operated and the slidable clutch 52 is brou ht into engagement with the clutch mem r 51 the shaft 49 will be driven through its operative connection with the engine shaft and the said shaft 49 in turn will drive the shaft 56 which in turn will drive the vertical shaft G2 which will rotate the gear wheels 66 in enga ement with the rack har 40 and the beam d8 will therefore he caused to move longitudinally of its snpporting guideway and project beyond one end thereof according to the direction in which the shaft 56 is driven.- .In order to draw the beam 38 hack into the gnideway it is only necessary to shift the sleeve 58 so as to bring the gear 59 thereon which was not in enga ement with the gear 54 into engagement with the gear 54.
In each end of the beam 38, which we may designate as the tie handling beam, is formed a vertical guideway 69-in which is mounted a bar 70 having rack teeth 70' formed alon one side thereof. At the lower end of said bar 70-is formed a hook 71. A small horizontally arranged shaft 72 extends from side to side of the tie handling beam 38 in proximity to said bar 70 and thereon is rigidly secured a gear wheel 73 which is nrranged to mesh with the teeth 70 on the har 70 and on said shaft 72 is also `secured a worm gear 74. A worm 76 is supported in suitahle'bearings 77 so as to engage with the worm gear 74, and at. the end of said worm is provided alcrank handle 78.
