UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcEc JACOB B. STONER, OF BLOOMFIELD, IOVA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,193, dated February 3, 1874, application iilcd May 15, 1873.
To all who-m 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'JACOB B. STONEE, of Bloomfield, in the county of Davis and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVashing-Machines; and
I do hereby declare the following` to be a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washing'- machine, as willbe hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig.,2 a side elevation, of my machine. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a perforated board, and Fig. 4 a bottom view of the rubber used in the machine.
A represents the box or tank, made of any suitable dimensions, and provided with handles c'c at the ends, and with an aperture, G, in one side to draw olf the dirty water. B represents a perforated board, which is ribbed or corrugated 011 its upper surface, and strengthened by means of strips e e at the ends and a strip, f, across the center on the under side.`
The board B plays upon pivots a a in bearings r r, and in the center on each side is a notch, g, to pass over guides b b inthe sides of the box. The central strip f prevents the water from rushing from one end of the box or tank A to the other. The dasher is composed of a'series of scalloped slats, O C, placed parallel to each other a suitable distance a-part,
and fastened together by means of pins L L and strips p p, the pins passing through the sla-ts, and the strips connecting them at the ends. The slat on each side of the dasher has a beveled notch, g', in the center, to lit over the guides b b in the box. The rubber is composed of a series of pear-shaped boards, D, which are scalloped at their lower wider ends, and their upper narrow ends are mortised into slats D. These slats are connected together by means of pins t' t', and on top of the slats are secured strips N N, which form a bearing by which the rubber receives motion from the lever or handle E, said lever or handle being secured to the dasher in the center, and passes up through a central aperture in the top N. The boards Dl of the rubber pass between the lslats C of the dasher.
' The goods to be washed are placed upon the perforated board B, and the dasher and rub= ber are then placed on top of the goods. The lever or handle E is then to be worked to and fro, which gives the perforated board and the dasher a rocking or dashing motion and the rubber a longitudinal or rubbing motion.
When the clothes are washed, the rubber and dasher are turned up to one side by means of ropes d and F. The lever E is lirst pushed in an opposite direction until the end of the dasher is high enough to allow a hook in the end of the rope l to be fastened in a staple, k. The lever E is thendrawn back far enough to drop a loop at the end of the rope F into 'anotch at the end of the lever.
The box or tank A is covered by means of a suitable lid or cover, It, having a longitudinal slot for the passage of the lever E.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The dasher composed of a series of scalloped slats, C O, connected by means of pins L L and strips p p, substantially as and for the purposes herein setv forth.
2. The rubber composed of the pear-shaped boards D D', scalloped at their lower ends, and their upper ends secured in slats D D, which are connected by means of pins t' 'i and covered by strips N N, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the perforated rocking board B, ribbed or corrugated on its upper surface, and the rocking dasher, composed of the scalloped slats O O and lever E, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4. The combination of the perforated rocking board B, ribbed or corrugated on its upper surface, and the rubber composed of the pearshaped boards Dl D and slatsD D, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
5. The combination of the perforated rocking board B, the rocking dasher O O, and the rubber D D', all constructed substantially 'as and for the purposes herein set forth.
JACOB B. STONER.
