Description

F. C. ROOD FLUSHING MECHANISM FOR TOILETS Filed Nov. 5. 191 9 rwm i fiwzzvz'wv:
Patented Get. 23, 192356 earner cleric.
FLETCHER C. R001), OF W'ALLA WALLA, WASHINGTON.
FLUSHING MECHANISE! FOR TDILETS.
Application 'filed November To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, F LETCHER C. Boon, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Walla Walla, county of Walla Y'Valla, and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Flushing M chanism for Toilets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to flushing mechanisms for toilets, and more particularly to further improvements in my fiushingmechanism as disclosed in my pending application,
. filed December 30, 1918, Serial ho. 268,892.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide an improved and simplified mechanism of the character referred to which will function properly and which will permit of certain adjustments for the better regulation thereof. ()ther objects and advantages will appear from the following description thereof, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a toilet stool embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a rear view thereof;
Figure 3 is an enlarged, vertical sectional View through my improved flushing mechanism;
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 3; and
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 66, Fig. 2.
Referring now more in detail to the drawings, 1 designates a stool, 2 a seat therefor, and 3 a cover for said seat. A water supply pipe 4, is connected through a valve 5, having an operating lever 6, with my improved flushing device, designated as a whole 7. The upper end of said flushing device 7 is connected by means of discharge'pipe 8, with the bowl 1.
My flushing device as here shown comprises a tubular member 9, connected at its lower endto the valve 5, as indicated, and at its upper end connected with the discharge pipe 8 by means of a bushing 10, which screws into the upper end of the tu bular member 9, and seats on to a flange 8 on the discharge pipe 8. Said flange 8 seats on a gasket 11 on an annular portion 9 in the hand lever would be raised.
5', 1919. Serial no. 337,222.
the tubular member 9, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. Mounted within said tubular member 9 is an inner tubular member 12, having at its upper end a flange 12*, clamped between the annular portion 9 of the tubular member 9 and the gasket 11. Thus the parts are easily disconnected for any purpose. The upper end of the inner tubular member 12 is provided with communieating holes or ports 13. The lower end of said inner tubular member 12 is provided with a slotted screw 14, having a head 15.
Movably mounted within said inner tubular member 12, is a floating member 16, the top, of which is provided with a short tubular member 18 therethrough, with a valve member 19 therein, held against dropping cut by means of a through pin 20. Said cover 3, said rod being provided with a crank 23, connected by means of a con necting rod 24 with the valve lever 6. A coiled spring 25 is mounted on said rod, one end of which spring is secured to the cover hinge, and the other end is secured to said lever 28. Said rod 21 is also provided with a lug 21 adapted to be normally held in engagement with a similar lug 26 on the hinge member 22 by said spring 25. Said flushing mechanism is automatically operated by the lowering of said cover 3, as indicated in Fig. .1, the valve lever 6 being raised to open the valve 5. With the cover 3 in raised position, the valve lever 6 would be down, as would be the crank arm 23 and rod 24, and Said hand lever 27 can be moved forwardly at will, while the cover 3 is raised, so as to flush the toilet while a person is seated if desired.
1 will now describe the use and operation of my device.
The water supplyis through the pipe 4, the flushing device 7 and the discharge pipe 8. The water is controlled by the valve 5, and the floating valve member 16, seating against the gasket 11 at the upper end of the inner tubular member 12. When the valve 5 is open, water flows up through tubular member 9, through the openings 13, and out ting off the flow of water through the open- :ings 13 and through the discharge pipe 8.; The force of the water also closes the valve through the discharge pipe 8 to the bowl. An upward current of water is also created in the. inner tubular member 12,. the water passing through the slotted screw 14, cansing the floating member 16 to riseuntil it finally seats against the gasket 11, where it is held by the force-of the water, thus out 19 of the floating member 16 and holds it closed-until the main valve'5 is closed. When valve. 5 is. closed, the valve 19 will open by gravity and break the water seal which might continue to hold the floating member 16 against. the gasket 11, closing the discharge pipe 8. As soon as the valve 19 opens, the member 16 can and will settle by gravity to the .bottom of the chamber in tubular member 12, ready to be again operated when the valve 5 isagain opened.
The quantity of water going through the mechanism at a single operation depends Water through the discharge pipe 8, and the greater the quantity of water passing through the device to the bowl.
p The two valves 5 and 16 are never closed at the same time excepting for the brief period required for. the breaking of the water seal, immediately after closing valve 5; They are never both open at the same time excepting while the'flushing operation is taking place.
- I am aware that changes can be made'in the details of my invention as here shown and-described, and I do not. therefore, limit the invention to the details here shown, except as I may. b limited by the hereto appended claims,
