Description

W. H. HALE.
Annunciator.
No. 14,719. Patented April 22,1856.
Fa -f9.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. HALE, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOTEL-ANN UNCIATO RS.
To all whom, it. may concern.-
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM H. HALE, of
. Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement on an Annunciator for Hotels, 850.; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing but two tilting number-plates or number-hammers in one rank with rods and bell for two other ranks. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective View showing an arrangement of a machine of two ranks and several tilting number-plates or number-hammers.
The same letters refer to like parts.
A is the case.
B is a rod passing through the case for the number-hammers to work on. (Marked by 1 2.)
O D are wires with knobs E E on them, passing through slots in the hammer-handles and connecting with springs F F, for the purpose of tilting over said hammers to strike bell G, and showing numbers 1 and 2, as seen in Fig. 2.
H H is a rack, working in bearings I I I I, fOl the purpose of throwing back the aforeaid hammers after being tilted over by being aised by crank and arm J J, rods K K, and
the lower parts of the rack and bell are used for ranks of hammers like B, &c., as in the model; but the hammers, wires, and springs are removed for the purpose of simplicity of explanation.
The operation is as follows: By drawing the wire D you tilt hammer 2, as represented, which falls over and strikes bell G, resting on rackH and opposite apertures in front board, as'seen in Fig. 2, and remains until you turn crank J which raises rack H and throws said hammer back at rest like hammer 1, ready to work again.
I do not claim the device of tilting numberplates to denote which number is wanted, as it is not new; but,
What I do claim as my invention, and dosire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the number-plate witha hammer, wherebyI am enabled to show the number and strike the bell with the same piece.
2. The arrangement of said tilting numberplates or number-hammers, or their equivalents, in ranks upon ranks of wires respectively operating them, the Wires passing through slots in the hammer-levers, substantially as described.
WVM. H. HALE.
