WASHING-MACHINE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,958, dated October 21, 1856.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLEs N. TYLER, of the city of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates first to a method of suspending the shaft of a rubbing or washing disk to the cross beam, whereby it may be revolved or partially so in orderto communicate a rubbing motion to the disk; and at the same time be free to vibrate back and forth to permit the disk being thrown out of or into the tub, as the lever or cross beam is raised or lowered. And it further relates to the method of adjusting the pressure ofthe rubbing or `washing disk upon the clothes whereby they may be subjected to a greater or less degree of rubbing, and by which the disk can also be so'adjusted as to wash as large or small a quantity of clothes as may be desired.

To enable others skilled in the art to make4 and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation. I take any common wash tub, put standards or braces on each side as supports for the disk or rubber. f

Figure l represents a view in perspective of a machine embracing my improvements; and Fig. 2, a plan of the under side of the sliding disk and shaft, showing the method of mounting the former on the latter.

`In the accompanying drawing A, represents the tub; B the disk; C the shaft; and D a block to which the cross bar or beam E is attached by the butt hinge s.

F represents supports or standards to hold the bar E, in place when the machine is in operation, they being secured to the sides of the tub by means of screws and form two of the legs or supports of the tub.

To the bar E, is suspended the shaft C, by the ring M, which is pivoted to thecross beam by pins or gudgeons a, and by which t-he shaft is enabled to vibrate as the lever E is raised or lowered in throwing the disk in or out of the tub. The disk B, is fitted loosely on the lower end of the shaft C, and is kept from slipping off when raised up, by the pins (6,) Fig. 2, on the shaft C, which fit into grooves on the under side of the disk B; there being also two grooves e, cut on the shaft C, into which tenons or clutches e, formed on the side of the hole made through the center of the disk for the reception of the shaft, take; the pins b and clutches e, taking into the grooves out on the disk and shaft respectively prevent the shaft C, from turning without carrying the disk or rubber with it.

G, represents a`block that slides up and down in a slot f, cut in the shaft C, it being attached to the lower end of the rod g, forming an inverted T (thus and serves for pressing down the spring H, by which the pressure of the disk upon the clothes can be regulated to any required degree, the spring when adjusted being held in position by passing a pin h, through a hole in the upper end of the shaft C, and rod g. Then it is desired to remove the disk from the shaft it is only necessary to withdraw the pins Z), from the latter and then draw the former from it.

I, represents the bottom of the tub, at or near the center of which is situated a pin which passes into a socket (m) formed on the lower end of the shaft C, to prevent the disk from rubbing against the side of the tub.

J, represents a handle or lever by which the disk is operated; and K a ring secured to the shaft to prevent it from sliding up through the ring M.

What I claim as new `and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is,

l. Suspending the shaft C, to the cross beam E, in such manner as to be free to turn on its axis for the purpose of oscillating the disk to wash the clothes, f'and at the same time be capable of vibrating back and forth as the lever is raised or lowered for the purpose of throwing the `disk into or out of the tub substantially as de-scribed.

2. I claim the sliding disk B, in combination with the slotted shaft C, and adjustable spring H, the whole being arranged and operated substantially as, and for the purposes described.`
