RAIL JOINT.
Application filed May 10, 1923. Serial No. 638,145.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, PER ANnnRssoN KoUn'rZMAN, a citizen of the Kingdom of Sweden, residing at Va'rtan, near Stockholm, Sweden, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail J oints of which the following is a specification. 1
The present invention relates to rail joints and more especially such rail joints as are provided with means for preventing the ends of the abuttingrails from moving up and down in relation toeach other when the wheels'of a train are passing over the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a rail joint of said type having the same or approximately the same elasticity as that of the rails. 7 p
The invention consists of the several details of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a rail-joint constructed in accordance with my invention, looking at the outer side of the rail. Fig. 2-is a similar view looking at the inner side, and Fig. 3 isia transverse vertical section taken through the opening between the abutting ends of the rails.
Resting with its ends upon two adjacent track ties is a base plate 2 having at its middle on the upper surface a raised portion 3 and on the under side a longitudinal flange '4: the dimensions of which determine substantially the elasticity of the base plate. The abutting ends of the rails 5 and 6 are disposed on the said elevated portion?) and are secured to each other in the usual manner by means of fish-plates 7 and 8 and bolts 9 with nuts 10. On the outer side of the rails is used a flat fish-plate 7. while on the innerside the fish-plate 8 is of angular cross section. The outer edge of the rail flanges is engaged by a hook shaped projection 11 of the base plate 2. At the inner side the base plate 2 is formed with another hook shaped projection .12. Between the latter and the lower branch of the fish-plate 8 angular wedges 13 are provided which are forced into the space between said parts in longitudinal direction and from each side of the projection 12. Set screws 14 may be used to keep said wedges in position. I
1 Having now described my invention, what 1. claimisF- y In a rail-joint,.the combination with the rails of a base plate having at its middle a raised portion supporting the abutting ends of the rails, fish plates and screw bolts securing the rail ends to each other, the base plate being formed at the outer side with a hook shaped projeotionengaging the outer edge of the rail flanges and at the inner side with another hook shapedprojection, and
wedges'between the latter and the fish plate on the inner side of the rails, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. I
In testimony whereofI have signed my name.
PER ANnERssoN KOURTZMAN.
