CHEST AND CONTAINER.

To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, DUDLEY HOLLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chests and Containers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to chests and containers for holding, displaying and transporting tools, nails, screws, bolts, fittings,
' samples, merchandise and other objects wherein it is important that the assortment and size thereof be kept separate, and easily available and accessible, and the object of the invention is to provide a chest, which when open will present trays, and a bottom compartment, in which articles of different sizes and assortments may be kept separate, such chest being so designed and constructed that the trays will automatically and simultaneously arrange themselves as the chest is opened and closed.
A further object is to provide means by which the several trays composing the said chest shall be laid out and placed in convenient and accessible position so that the articles contained therein may be easily found and displayed.

The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations all as herein described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Tn the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chest as completely folded, and showing the outside encasement.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the encasement partl opened with avsection of the front folde downward showing the trays in position within the encasement.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of said chest with one end of the encasement removed and illustrating the operating bars.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the chest completely opened, with the trays 6 and 3,
distributed above and to the right of each other and of the bottom compartment 7, respectively.
In Figures 3 and 4:, the bars designated by the numerals 2, 4, 5 and 8, are metal bars which operate and support the trays as the chest is opened; 7 is the bottom compartment and 3 and 6 are two trays. The bar 2 is fastened to the outside encasement and tra 1922. serial No, avaoea to the tray 3 by the bolt 16 and to the tray 3 by the pin 15. The bars 5 are fastened to the lower compartment by pins 21 and 22 and to the first tray, 6 by the pins 23 and 24L and the bars d are fastened to the first tra 6 by the pins 25 and 26 and to the sectray, 3 by the pins 16 and 18, and the bar 8 is fastened to the outside encasement by pin 19 and is fastened to tray 6 by pin 26, each fastening being at the points indicated in the drawings.
In Figure 3 the bottom compartment and two trays respectively are directly above each other, while in Figure 4:, the "lid or cover has been lifted and the ends and back of the outside encasement have revolved to the right, and the tray 3, being attached to the end of the outside encasement by the bar 2 and the bolt 16, is moved backward and supported and kept in a horizontal position as the end of the outer encasement is revolved to the right; and tray 6, being attached to tray 3 by the bars a, and being attached to the end of the outsideencasement by the bar 8 and pin 19, likewise is moved backward in a horizontal position as the end of the outside encasement revolves, and 3 is moved backward, so that trays 3 an 6 are automatically and simultaneously moved backward in a horizontal position to the right as the end of the outside encasement revolves a quarter way around, thus leaving the bottom compartment and the two trays each uncovered and in the osition shown in Figure at. The bars 2 an 8 also support the trays 3 and 6, respectively.
The lid of the chest 11 is attached to the back 13 by appropriate hinges 9, and the back 13 is attached to the bottom 28 by hinges 10 so that when the lid 11 is lifted, the back 13 tips backward and moves downward until it lies upon the ground or floor, by operation of hinges 10; and the lid 11 extends up to support tray 3 at point 27 as shown in Figure 4c. The lid 11 is attached to the outside encasement by the bar 12, at the point 29, where a pin passes through both 12 and the outside encasement, so that the lifting and movement of the lid 11 automatically lowers the back 13, revolves the ends of the outside encasement backward and to the right and automatically and simultaneously, distributes the trays as shown in Figure i. The trays 6 and 3 are attached, supported, and held in place and in a horizontal position by the bars 2, 4:, 5, and 8,

and the opposite end from that shown in Figures 3 and 4' is equipped with bars and means of attachment identical with those shown in Figures 3 and 4.
Tray 3 is attached to the outside encasement by bar 2 and bolt 16, and tray 6 is fastened to the outside encasement b bar 8 and the pin 19. As the lid 11 is ifted and moved backward, it being attached to the back 13 by the hinges 9 and to the ends of the encasement by the bars 12, the movement of the lid u ward and backward causes the ends to revo ve one-quarter of a revolution to the right, and causes the back of the outside encasement 13 to tip backward and down on its hinges 10 until it lies on the same plane with the base 28, thus forming an enlarged base to support the opened chest, as shown in Figure 4. The trays 3 and 6, being attached to the end of the encasement b bars 2 and 8, are moved backward and dlstributed and supported as shown in Figure 4, by the quarter revolution and backward movement of the ends of the outside encasement, in combination with the operation of the bars 2 and 8.

I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of a chest containing a bottom compartment and movable trays, in combination with a movable outside encasement encasing the said trays, and attached to said trays by suitable means of attachment.
2. The combination of a chest, composing a bottom compartment and movable trays, attached together, and to a movable outside encasement, by suitable means of attachment, so attached and adjusted that when the lid of the outside encasement is opened and lifted, the ends of the outside encasement revolve and automatically and simultaneously move and distribute the trays so that each tray clears the one immediately beneath it, thereby leaving each tray and the brgtltom compartment uncovered and acces- S1 e.
. 3. The combination of a bottom compart' ment and movable trays surrounded by an outside encasement, and attached-together. and to the outside encasement by movable and suitable means of attachment, and so attached and adjusted that when the chest is opened and the trays distributed the mechanical attachment which extended the trays, ties the trays to the exterior encasement and serves as a support for the trays when extended.
4. The combination of a bottom compartment and movable trays surrounded by an outside encasement, and so attached to each other and to the outside encasement, by suitable means of attachment, that the lifting of the lid of the outside encasement automatically and simultaneously extends and distributes the trays, revolves the ends of the exterior encasement, and tips downward the back of said encasement causin said back to rest on the same plane with the base of said chest, so that the supporting base of said chest is enlarged to support the chest when opened.
5. The combination of a bottom compartment and movable trays surrounded by an exterior encasement which encasement is equipped with a lid, said trays being so attached to each other and to the exterior encasement by suitable means of attachment, that the lifting of said lid automatically opens said chest, distributes the trays, re-
volves the ends of the encasement, and lowers the back of said chest to form the enlarged supporting base;
6. In combination a chest composed of a bottom compartment and movable-trays, an exterior encasement surrounding said compartment and trays, and a lid which forms the top cover of said encasement, and which is so attached to the said encasement that the lid, when lifted, operates as a lever to move the ends and back of said encasement, and thereby distribute the trays, and enlarge the supporting base.
